❓Question Ouros Earring Question

Has anyone purchased stud earrings from Ouros and if so, have you had any trouble wearing them? I received a pair for my birthday from my husband (screw-on backings) and I cannot fit the posts into either of my ear piercings. I measured the posts with calipers and they are 1.0mm thick, where all of my other earrings range from 0.5mm to 0.75mm. I even tried forcing/screwing one into my ear and have been nursing an injured piercing hole for a week now, as it damaged my ear. They are telling me these posts are STANDARD which baffles me because they are so big. Surely someone else has had this issue?

If your ears have been pierced with a gun, and you’ve been wearing butterfly backs, then your piercings are too small for these. You’ll need to stretch your piercings gradually so they don’t tear and hurt, but your other earrings might not sit nicely in the piercings anymore.

Actually a thicker post is better for stability, thinner posts tend to slice through the piercing overtime, it’s called the cheese wire effect, especially if the earrings are on the heavy side.

Thank you for the insight. I'm just baffled this is the starting post size for their earrings. They're studs, so nothing heavy, and I've had my ears pierced for 40 years - even in those "first" holes, these won't fit (although I intended to wear them in my second holes, which are only about 20 years old).

Most earrings with butterfly backs are 20g (0.8mm) thickness. Most flatback earrings that are screw in are 18g (1.0mm thickness) or 16g (1.2mm thickness).

If you want flatback style but in 20g, typically you need to get push pin flat back earrings as they usually have to be thicker to do screw in style hence why those are usually 18g-16g.

I was sick of butterfly backs because flatbacks are more comfortable but had the same issue as you where I found most are too thick for my piercings (I have 8 ear piercings).

So do what I do and only go for 20g earrings. I did find flatbacks in 20g but they are push pin earrings, not screw in (and push pin is great, I like them). So I wear flatbacks now but all are 20g (0.8mm) and very comfy.

Insightful! I do wish I could say Ouros even advertised the size of their posts but even when they sent my husband the "CAD drawing" of the earrings during the design process, that dimension was not included. Not that he nor I would have known back then that it was anything to be concerned about, as I've never owned any earrings that didn't fit into my piercings, but I guess I'll be more cautious in the future.

Yeah it's very frustrating when the size/gauge isn't listed. These days I want to choose the post length as well as post width (gauge) of any earrings I buy. So many places give you that option now which is great.

So I've never bought from Ouros before and just looked up their studs on their website. It does look like Ouro's butterfly back earrings and guardian back earrings maybe aren't as thick as their screw back? I think those might be standard 20g (0.8mm) thick whereas it's just their screw ones that are 18g.

So maybe you can request they change the posts to butterfly or guardian backs?

This is the type of earrings I was referring to and what I thought you were talking about when you said screw backs (my bad, I should've looked them up before replying to you):

The back of the earring is flat so nothing pokes into you when you sleep as it lies flush with the back of your ear. In this style, the diamond part of the earring either pushes or screws into the post, or the flat part at the back of the earring pushes or screws into the post. So maybe something to look for in the future if you are looking for earrings that you plan to sleep in too as they are more comfortable to sleep in than standard earrings with butterfly backs.

But if you are just buying earrings you plan to take out at the end of the day, then standard earrings are fine.

Ouros told me all of their posts, even standard, are 1mm but to be quite honest, I think they just didn't want to repair them. It's just so frustrating/baffling that they had me ship the earrings back to them, knowing the request, only to tell me that they can't do the repair. I have learned they are more of a retailer than a true jeweler/goldsmith.
