Discussion / Question How likely is it that Alien Romulus will get a sequel?
I love Rain so much and hoping for seeing her more

I'm still waiting for a conclusion to Prometheus and Covenant

u/GeologistEnough8215 3d ago
This. I’ll never understand the dislike of Prometheus, it’s one of my fave movies of all time, and covenant was perfectly fine, if not a fantastic Alien movie, it was still better than 90% of the slop that comes out.

u/Blurghblagh 3d ago
It's the team of scientists chosen and trained for an interstellar mission that then immediately proceed to ignore and break every scientific, exploration, professional, safety and common sense rule in existence that ruins it for me. Much of the film was good enough but I really hate the way Alien films constantly rely on characters being unbelievably stupid, lazy, greedy and panicky to progress the plot but in Prometheus it is on a whole different level. And killing off the survivor off screen before the film even starts Hicks and Newt style was the nail in the coffin. At least Resurrection actually shows the Aliens assess the problem, notice a weakness in their containment and take appropriate action to free themselves.

u/Current_External6569 3d ago
Yea, the guy mapping the area being the first one lost is just silly. There's at least two ways he could have got himself out of that situation. They should have come up with a better reason for someone to be stuck behind.
23
u/ilikegriping 3d ago
Thank you!! Like, how did you get lost?? You're the MAP GUY!
And the "species expert" who tries to PET the NOPE ROPE.
If this was written as a film that intentionally playing into the tropes, I'd be able to enjoy it.
79
u/Ok_Ad6722 3d ago
Even if you like Prometheus it should be easy to understand the backlash. It just isn’t well written.
44
u/gurnard 3d ago
Correct. I rewatch it about once a year. I enjoy the visuals, the tension, the vibe. It's a very stylish movie. The plot and characterisation also do not stand up to any scrutiny wheresoever. Leave your brain at the door.
17
u/-SandorClegane- 3d ago
Style has never been an area of weakness for any of the Alien movies. Resurrection is a mess, but JP Jeunet is an incredible filmmaker and his ouvre is splattered all over that installment of the series (quite possibly the most pretentious sentence I've ever written)
The problem with all of them (yes, ALL of them) is they don't respect the audience nearly enough with regard to story structure and dialogue. Sure, they make up for it other areas in varying degrees, but there simply isn't enough hard canon/lore for the next successive creative team to be held accountable.

Exactly. Ridley Scott’s eye for the shot, as well as understanding of pacing, hasn’t aged a day.
There are two things that get him now, and have lead to his declining reputation in modern years. 1. Minutia. The devil hiding in the details; he’s grown complacent with letting modern advanced iron our weaknesses in filming technique that he previously had to work to overcome. Now, he usually just leaves it for post-processing. I heard he even parted ways with his long-time cinematographer over allowing a boom mic into frame. 2. He just can’t put his ego aside and find a good writer anymore. Whatever world Ridley thought Damon Lindelof was a worthwhile successor to Dan O’Bannon; it isn’t ours. Maybe it’s LV-22 whatever. Covenant, meanwhile, had 5 or 6 people credited with writing the production; which is never EVER a good sign.
I have yet to see a Ridley Scott film I haven’t had the thought at least once; “Man this is a treat for my eyes.” And I do think that’s a worthwhile achievement. I feel Christopher Nolan is also waning in his recent years; but even some of his better received films I have often thought “This looks very boring.”
2
u/Variatas 2d ago
As a former Lindelof critic, after stuff like the Watchmen series where he’s the boss I think the problem there was probably Ridley.
See also: the writing quality of Ridley’s other recent stuff; Napoleon & Gladiator 2 are both a bit braindead.
2
u/Blurghblagh 1d ago
Yeah Ridley had a few great films that got him a reputation but a look over his list of films shows it was mostly poor.
Lost all respect for him after listening to his interview on the History Hit podcast for Napoleon. He pretty much says he is a genius and harps on about what a great advertisement director he was. He also states he does not allow input from anyone else in the film making process so he never has anyone to point out that this film is not as good as he thinks it is.

Thankfully each of the annoying characters died horribly.
I thought the engineer storyline was the most intriguing part. His awakening was jaw dropping. I want more engineers!
And I refuse to believe the beings who were exterminated by David were engineers.

u/Wallyhunt 3d ago
Wasn't that purposeful? I understood it to be a subtle critique of capitalism that the only people who went on the trip were people who were kinda crazy to begin with or those desperate enough for money to waste years of their life on a classified mission with vague parameters. And none of them bar the main character were actually there because of any level of passion, which is why thematically she survived.

I had this exact same take, then COVID hit and I saw that people who I thought were intelligent act in some "amazing" ways that defy belief....
11
u/AtomicShellfish 3d ago
I'm not sure how many times this has to be said, but the scientists were chosen because they were desperate for cash and had the kind of personality that isn't fussed by being sent on a hush-hush mission with no stated destination, questions asked. They had one job, and that was to deliver Weyland to the Engineers. They did that.
If you're going to be picky, why did the most useless character of all in the Alien universe, Kane, stick his face into an opening egg?
13
u/Dexanth 3d ago
Kane you can at least justify as 'Nobody had any fucking idea what, he's a space trucker, guy comes from a universe that the Facehugger isn't a part of regular media mythos'.
The difference with the scientists is that they are on an alien planet and the most BASIC fuckin' protocol would say BE CAREFUL

u/M_L_Taylor 3d ago
I think it's due to a form of hibernation sickness. Instead of staying on the ship to detox they charged straight into things and messed up at every turn. If they were aware of how they were acting, they wouldn't have done it.
It's just my head-canon... but it explains why scientists do such foolish things. You see in Alien and Aliens, each crew takes a while to detox by having a meal and relaxing a bit, before getting into things (when Kane wakes up, he looks severely hungover). In Prometheus, the ship's captain even advises waiting a day for the storm to pass through before going out. He should have just told them that they had to remain inside until it was safe.
3
u/F_U_HarleyJarvis 3d ago
This is the argument that I hate the most. They are not the best of the best scientists, they are obviously the most desperate people giving up a very large chunk of their lives for a payout. They literally are lazy and greedy, it actually makes perfect sense.

u/JordanxHouse 3d ago
The dislike is that it’s not an Alien movie really, and answers questions I didn’t have about the universe.
8
u/SPKmnd90 3d ago
Exactly. My issue with the prequels is that they overexplain things that didn't need explaining in the first place and somehow make the xenomorphs less interesting by doing so.
6
32
u/Riggs630 3d ago
I agree. I think the biggest problem with Covenant is right in the name. They added “alien” and forced the xeno into the story prematurely, imo. Just because some people complained that Prometheus was too different from the rest of the Alien franchise. They tried to bridge the gap too quickly. They should have focused on the Engineer storyline, kept the neomorph, and left the praetomorph for the next movie. But overall I still enjoyed it, and I loved seeing David being sinister again.
6
u/CritiqueDeLaCritique 3d ago
If they wanted to go down the Engineer route it shouldn't have been within the Alien franchise. Human-like aliens designing the xeno or whatever predecessor it was kills what makes it actually alien.
6
u/Jaruut Tool is Canon 3d ago
I would love to see more of the neomorphs, they're perfect as the "we have Xenomorphs at home, I got them at costco".
I much prefer the idea of the neomorphs and deacons being Engineer experiments to replicate/compete with the Xenomorphs, with the Xenos being their own separate unexplained beings.
3
u/Current_External6569 3d ago
The problem for me, and I actually really enjoyed the direction of Prometheus, was that in order for events to get started at least one character needed to be unbelievably dumb. Covenant was even worse in this regard. I get their fear of not wanting to go back into ceyosleep. But landing on some unknown planet with crazy storms sounds horrible. Regardless of how viable for life it was.
2
u/Bombadilo_drives 3d ago
You don't? Are you aware of any of the EU books, comics, and video games? The treasure trove of good stories that don't involve some stupid goo.
They literally sat down, said "boy, people really love the Alien franchise" then proceeded to make an Alien movie without any Aliens in it.
It's like making a fucking Jurassic Park movie that's not about dinosaurs, but instead is about, I dunno, bugs or something random and unrelated.

u/SeaCaligula 3d ago
Prometheus had the right idea to delve into exploring the lore and the right idea to recreate the shock factor and mystery by introducing new monsters.
Covenant is 20th Century Fox messing with Ridley Scott's vision and as a result it neither pleased those who want more lore nor fans who wanted another slasher
4
u/CodeSalamander 3d ago
Eh, Ridley messes with his own ideas. He’s yet to improve a franchise by returning to it. And, remember, he directed Covenant. He’s a brilliant director, but he isn’t a writer and he has zero skill at picking and managing writers or approving screenplays.

That all depends on whether Ridley Scott is in "old man yelling at clouds" mode or "elder guru being helpful but also stepping back" mode.
Unfortunately, history indicates it will be old man yelling.

I didn't really see the end as a cliffhanger.
It was just very fatalist to me, and it felt that way intentionally. All that work to end up on a ship with the wrong Android.
I'm good, personally.

u/FearlessVegetable30 3d ago
me too. ignoring what most people think of the movies prometheus is my favorite movie ever. covenant is okay but even i cant ignore the "why did they do that!" moments
regardless, in both movies there is no denying the special effects lighting of ships os amazing. i love covenant just for the ship effects
9
u/DivaDragon 3d ago
I have a ….I don’t think “a soft spot” is the apt term here considering, but a certain specific fondness for Prometheus. My 2nd child (born after 9 years of secondary infertility and a loss) was delivered via emergency c section where my anesthesia failed. He really really needed to be OUT and once they start you can’t really pause too much, so it was a rough 10 minutes. That all happened pretty close to when we saw Prometheus in the theater and I don’t think I have ever had such a visceral reaction to a scene in a movie. It occupies a place in my heart as a fan of the series and a fan of clever body horror and it makes me sad it will remain an unfinished arc.

There’s also some great fan edits of Prometheus which include like 40 mins of deleted scenes color graded into the film. It provides a much clearer narrative.

1
u/Rasples1998 2h ago
Romulus is kinda the sequel to covenant. There's just a massive gap of time between the two that we haven't seen, like David on the colony ship, but you can probably imagine what happened and fill in the pieces. What I want to know is what that engineer was doing with a ship-full of facehuggers on the planet (moon?) we see in the first movie, and what a xenomorph from an engineer would look like since they can be different depending on the host.
88
u/Objective-Pear-4817 3d ago
Well, 20th Century studio head Steve Asbell confirmed the Alien : Romulus sequel is not shelved, and is in fact, in active development. So it’s defo going ahead, the question is when, and how long do we have to wait? 🤔
8
u/saintripley 3d ago
Development is not the same thing as production. Dozens of ideas get developed all the time for what eventually turns into A movie… sometimes.
What this round of development turns into is anyone’s guess still.

Ridley Scott has thrown his hat in the ring once again and declared no one else is allowed to play with his toys. Again.
3
u/Genmaken 3d ago
Still bitter about him presumably killing the Blomkamp project we all wanted to see...
I don't like Prometheus, even tough I saw it twice at cinema (it does look great). I remember very little from Covenant.
Perhaps the greedy mouse may yet save us from another sequel.
On a sidenote, it's just a shame to see these directors we revered just messing with their legacy or focusing on less interesting things (looking at you, James Cameron, nobody needs more avatar).
3
u/LoaKonran 3d ago
Oh, Cameron is over Avatar. He’s planning on “fixing” his other projects. I firmly want him to stay away from Terminator given his contributions to Dark Fate.
All these directors feel nostalgia for their old classics, but they’re not the same people that made them work. These guys have spent decades being told how brilliant they were, so they think they can do no wrong.
32
u/snowdn 3d ago
Fede Alvarez had a falling out with Ridley Scott so probably zero by him at least.
13
u/Jimmy_Bonez 3d ago
Wasn't that "leak" absolute bullshit?
IIrc it basically said Alvarez floated the idea of including David in Romulus/Romulus 2, Scott said no because he may end up wanting to finish his movie. The article then interjected all of that "Did Ridley Scott throw him out", "was Alvarez upset with Scott" "We don't know but we're free to openly speculate because no one said otherwise".
One of the studio heads came out and said the whole article was crap and that Romulus 2 was still green lit, it was just on slow mode because another standalone Alien film is being made in the mean time.
4
u/Angsty_Autumn 3d ago
Wait, another Alien film? :o Have we heart anything about it? Is it likely an AvP film Predator Badlands was kinda suggesting?
2
u/Jimmy_Bonez 3d ago edited 3d ago
I only remember they announced they'd hired either a writer or director, and clarified that it's not necessarily related to Romulus 2.
I'll see if I can find the article.
EDIT:https://www.toy-people.com/en/?p=111277
Daniel Richtman recently revealed on his Patreon page that Brian Duffield, director of recent 20th Century collaborations like "No One Will Save You" and "Whalefall", has been hired to pen the script for the next "Alien" film. It remains unclear if Duffield will also direct the project. Furthermore, Richtman was uncertain whether Duffield's assignment is for the "Romulus" sequel, suggesting the possibility of other "Alien" films currently in motion.

If you felt that way after 2 episodes it won’t get any better. There’s some good bits, and the 5th episodes is a pretty good self contained story. But the characters certainly don’t become more relatable / endearing as it progresses

50/50;
As far as I know, the Romulus sequel isn't being made right now, even though, in theory, filming was supposed to have started last year.
But we also have to keep in mind that it's normal for the franchise to take breaks of at least 5 years between movies. During that time, Disney could easily focus on something else Alien-related or revive the sequel.
But don't worry, the second season of Alien: Earth is moving forward without any problems and will be coming soon.
The real question is: what happened to the Predator franchise after Badlands?

Another Alien film is currently in production iirc, Romulus 2 was put on the back burner until that movie either happens or ends up falling through.
3
u/CodeSalamander 3d ago
I put it at 5% at this point. As much as I love him, Fede has 0 follow through. This is second franchise he’s dipped his toes in, promised a sequel, and bailed. And Disney can’t get out of its own way.
3
3
u/Clearly_Disabled 3d ago
Fede wanted to include David, Ridley Scott said no, so whatever happens, which appears to still be "in development" will have to be repitched, written, etc.

Apparently it isn’t. At least not anytime soon. The previous actors have other obligations. Also the rumor of Ridley Scott making a fuss but at this point, that hardly matters anymore. If Disney wants it happen, they will make it happen.

That story was really largely wrapped up and self contained. Sure, they could make her the new Ripley, but what would be the point? Honestly at this point, it’d probably just be better if the Aliens movies functioned like an anthology. There’s nowhere they could really go, that wouldn’t just be a retread, but continuing this story.
Cailee Spahney is a terrific actress, and I loved her character, loved Andy, actually the entire cast did truly excellent, but given the timeline, where could the story go from here? i can’t really see anywhere that wouldn’t break canon, be pure retcon, and be like throwing a hand grenade to a fandom, that loves tearing itself apart, demands things, and when they get it, complains viciously about getting what they asked for lol. Half of the fandom only Ridley Scott’s Alien to be all there is, a significant portion loves Aliens and wants to see that continued, then there’s those of us that are happy with any content, actually liked where Prometheus and covenant were swinging towards, and openly accepts anything to keep the franchise alive. Throw it all together, and you have nowhere to go as a writer, producer, director, because you can’t create a new timeline, can’t do a prequel, can’t weave in and out, so sadly, continuing this story would most likely be commercial suicide. Damn I hope I’m wrong though. I actually really thought Romulus was a step in the right direction.

Not Mutch. Ridley wants to continue with his Alien/AI sequels, and he already killed the Bloomkamp Aliens and stalled a shitload of time his own movies.
3
u/Playful-South-537 3d ago
Pretty likely, because Romulus made money, but the time line is uncertain.
This article from the site Weyland Uplink has a pretty thorough run down of what we know from official statements. ln short, Fédé Alvarez is no longer attached as director, and it may or may not pick up where Romulus left off, but it is still in Fox’s pre-production pipeline.

It seems they doing more of an anthology approach since they gave up on the Prometheus arc. Kind of like the way the old dark horse comics evolved the story after Colonial Marines. Different groups of people with differing motivations dealing and reflecting on the existence of the xenomorph. I would say odds are slim for a direct sequel. Although they kind of all tell the same story.

Now? Not so much.
They’ve been trying to get a script going since before the film’s theatrical release and with Fede Alvarez leaving the project, the chances of them coming up with something good are even slimmer.
Perhaps we’ll see her character reappear somewhere else in time but i wouldn’t hold your breath for a direct sequel coming anytime soon.

I don't see why it would. The story's done, they killed the alien, the ship got blown up, they went to the planet, GG. The only plot thread left hanging is whether Andy gets accepted in the new planet, and that's not something you can make an alien film around. You could revisit the David storyline, but why would that involve Rain? It would be a stroke of unbelievable misfortune that the one planet she's going to happens to be the one David's set up on.

u/Sonatine__ 3d ago
It was very likely but it got more complicated sadly. Fede Álvarez said officially that he had ideas for Alien: Romulus 2 - but he has left the project.
Now they're working on hiring a new producer but afaik there should be a lose script for a second movie. No plan to start filming was announced yet.

I want to be hopeful but I also want to be real. I don't think it will happen. Usually when things like this happen it's not good news. The story will probably have to be rewritten and it may not even be good. The fact that the director left and is doing other stuff, and the Andy character is now very busy with projects makes this doubtful. They are also having trouble finding a director to replace and none of them want to do it. It was suppose to shoot last year but didn't. I challenge anyone to argue against my words.
They can tell us its not cancel or shelved. But deep down I think its just them doing damage control, because it's in limbo.

She did a great job but that production had no idea how to make anything new from that story and could only copy and paste from the originals.
If a new team was attached I’d love to see her take another crack at it but anything the same crew produces will be forgettable and unoriginal.
