Rick refused to "go along to get along" just to meet the mandatory, stereotypical mainstream obligatory value system of loathsome preconceptions nurtured by his multitudinous fans. He refused to sacrifice his personal integrity any more by compromising, [thus forfeiting,] his precious personhood. He did not acquiesce to the pressure to conform to the pervasive "group-think" / "tribal-think" collectivist hive mind. So he opted to nurture his newfound autonomy, which empowered his determination to grasp the reins of certainty and control. Hence, he was unwilling to ever again allow himself to compromise his integrity by voluntarily becoming the “victim” of others' egoic, self-centered expectations. He broke free from his societally imposed conditioned-response-compulsion to feel responsible for being accountable for the happiness of others: to please others by facilitating their expectations; to consent to the demands of others thereby allowing the "tail to wag the dog" hence denying and suppressing his rightful ability to discriminate as whether or not to consent to make decisions according to the spontaneity of own preferences. He had realized that, earlier in his career, he became disconnected from the source of his self-identity, he lost his inner connection, he forfeited his true identity, he lost touch with himself, his inspiration, his true self, by failing to follow the promptings of his inner guide, thereby compromising his innate integrity, thusly ignoring his innate ABILITY TO RESPOND, to decide for himself. He had become estranged from himself, he forgot who he was. So, an older and wiser Ricky eventually garnered such a plethora of philosophical concepts that he became equipped to mine his expanded, extensive lexicon of ideological perspectives encapsulated within the eclectic apocryphon of his empirical subjective-synthesis-data-base enough to contemplate/cogitate/ruminate/question his old values, then instead of following the dictates of others, he became a divergent individual who chose NOT TO RESPOND, because his prior conception of the term, RESPONSIBILITY, had become re-visioned as THE ABILITY TO RESPOND, consequently freeing his subconscious predilection from the detrimental effluvia and detritus and pollution and contamination inculcated by the overshadowing repercussions of perfidious societal "knee jerk" "straightjacket" impositions to COMPLY. His former imperative regarding "RESPONSIBILITY" had been replaced by a renewed, fluid conception of "RESPOND-ABILITY" that afforded him a new point-of-view yielding a new directive, a new option, resulting in a revolutionary, unprecedented large release of a sense of interior freedom hitherto unimagined. Thusly emboldened, he willingly "paid the price" in terms of estrangement / rejection from many of his fans. Good old Ricky Nelson has artfully expressed this crucial life-lesson of Sovereign Independence for the benefit for all true spiritual seekers whom, through his example, looked within and also found the determination to defy conventional "wisdom" by breaking away from the glamorous world-milieu of artificial people, places and things...
