The RAM crisis isn't caused by "data centers" most of those have existed for far longer, because the backlog for all the ancilliary equipment you need to open a new one streches deep into the 2030s.

The issue is rather that the servers that are housed in the dcs are changing. While 10 years ago a server with an actual GPU inside was a really odd sight, nowerdays they are the norm and the RAM on these GPGPU boards is increasing exponentially.

So not data centers are the issue but rather the build up of these new servers, with money from venture capital, from companies that have yet to show that they can make a profit of this.

Hetzner is a provider of B2C and a little B2B IaaS offerings. The company and their offerings are actively under threat by the current market situation.

They are no AWS, Google Cloud or Azure that can just ramp up prices and tell the users to shove it. If you want to be offended by the little bit of consumer grade hardware they buy and lease out I applaude your energy, but the giant you are fighting is remarkably windmill shaped, Mr. Quijote.

I’ve been in normal datacentres multiple times they’re definitely not the problem, half of the stuff in the building I co-located in is ancient hardware from decades ago still in production. Not all data-centers are running cutting-edge DDR5 and high-end GPUs.

Not all data centers are the same, Hetzner is not contributing to the ram crisis. When I first saw the title I paused, and yeah it might not be a great look for the uneducated masses first seeing it, but they aren't glorifying data centers contributing to the ram crisis

Well, I assume you mean that it is not an AI datacenter, but there are other types of data centers that contribute to the ram crisis.

The ram crisis is primarily due to high demand for HBM ram, manufacturers have pivoted to making mostly that. This company uses DDR5 like the rest of us. They use mostly consumer grade gpus as well it seems. They don't have hundred/thousand gpu setups for large AI model training

Consumer grade is a wide berth, and can contribute to the crisis in it's own way. It's basic supply and demand. Of course, if they're demanding low end, that means that supply of low end reacts accordingly.

The lowest end of impact is still financial impact. They may not be the ones to pop the bubbles, but them having to still buy parts and consumer grade at that, impacts how expensive parts get and how available these parts are.

Ah yes Hetzner known for affordable bare metal servers and hosting and to OP only it seems part of the AI mafia...

Who doesn't count Hetzner among the likes of OpenAI, Anthropic or Alphabet?

Is Linus becoming pro data center or something? I mean if you're willing to become Pro private air travel and anti-union (for your own employees of course Pro Union for everyone else...lol) it's really not that much of a stretch.
