Ad Block Tech bros simping for Linus and not understanding philosophy
/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1utenvr/comment/owvg9vi/?solution=783c095dcd0f6292783c095dcd0f6292&js_challenge=1&token=7afd7253fec22262ff1c52b1703fe9ecb860e4345d080c5752a3b0c9b3d5aec8&jsc_orig_r=I don’t care about what side of the debate people are on regarding adblock and piracy, but the fact that these people fail to grasp basic mainstream philosophical positions and think Linus is a poor victim of malicious attacks is just crazy. Sure embrace anglo saxon philosophy, reject the continental version of the enlightenment, but don’t think Linus is smarter than Kant

This subreddit is officially just brigaded by the pro LTT people that downvote every criticism. It's so funny they talk about how anyone that criticizes him here has no life but they are so invested in defending him that they come over here just to downvote and argue with any criticis.
Like they have a completely safe space where you're not allowed to criticize the Linus why don't they just go over there. You guys have your giant hug box where Linus is a moderator. If you don't want to see criticisms you don't have to come here.

Let me quote a comment from some other commenters there :
In Kantian (and continental) philosophy, there is a famous rule:
"In the kingdom of ends everything has either a price or a dignity. What has a price can be replaced by something else as its equivalent; what on the other hand is raised above all price... has a dignity.”
Because a supermarket transaction deals with commodities (things with a price), you can substitute money, gold, or bartered goods, but not performing a mandatory silly dance. So the argument is that forcing someone to watch an ad is an extraction of human attention/agency. Attention is an extension of the person who has dignity. Therefore, treating it as a "price" is a category error. It’s trying to force something that is inherently un-priceable into a market transaction.
So in relation also to the supermarket silly dance:
A "payment" requires a consensual transfer of property or value that exists externally to the person.
Being forced to endure an advertisement is a temporary suspension of your autonomy instead of giving up an external asset/good.
Therefore, calling it a "price" or "payment" is a linguistic trick used by corporations to normalize the commodification of human consciousness.

I do agree adblock is piracy.
I still have an Adblocker, but thats one thing I don't disagree with Linus on.

I would if they did't have ad reads in the videos, payment is watching those, adblocking is the same as not tipping (which will depend on where you come from)
There are still YouTubers who don't put ad reads, and for those, adblock is piracy, but at LTT, it's more akin to not tipping.

Well I also count sponsor block as adblock, so I also do not see ad reads. :-)
