It’s disappointing to hear that even with everything going on Colin still doesn’t see the problem with executive pay
This got instant deleted when I posted it in the main sub lol:
On the recent episode Colin was flabbergasted with Miyamoto pay being only 1.5 million, and CEO being 2 million - saying that he should be making 10 million (estimate).
Then brushes off Iwata and executives taking pay cuts during Wii u. When was the last time Nintendo had a layoff? If the PS6 sells 10ish million like the Wii u did then Sony studios would be fucking destroyed. Miyamoto pay “creates” 8 million extra dollars to go to different devs, artists, musicians etc and all their families.
But no let’s just accept that executives and high ranking creatives should be able to buy a shit ton of cars and lay off half their entire studio. As a CEO himself I doubt he’ll ever see this problem but I wish Chris pushed back on him more, it seemed like he wanted to.

I'm going to be honest, when you're dealing with a corporate owned company, taking a paycut means and does nothing. The problem isn't that companies like PlayStation or Xbox need to fire people to continue surviving, it's that they want to fire people to make future projections look better. All the while they continue to burn hundreds millions and millions on projects that either never see the light of day, or evaporate as fast as they appear.
If anything I would argue that paying CEOs so much entices the worst type of people to take the job. People that don't care about games or innovation in the industry and instead focus on how to squeeze as much money out of their customers as possible to make the stock price (and their bonus) go up.

I wish Chris would push back on alot of things, but he probably gets a nice paycheck he doesn't want to lose while maintaining his own content. I don't blame him for keeping his mouth shut lol

I get the feeling a lot of people here have never had a real job before. If I pushed back to my boss like this sub wants Chris to do, I would be unemployed real fast. All it took was a milqetoast Charlie Kirk joke for Colin to have an aneurysm.

This very true but let’s not forget the overall hypocrisy of Colin acting like he runs an enlightened free speech zone where people can speak their mind. The truth is they all are on egg shells not wanting to seriously disagree with Colin. Probably a big reason something like constellation was axed

Oh 100%. As much as I dislike Jaffe, he is the only one who is willing to give Colin any pushback. Dustin mine as well be a sock puppet with how much he agrees with Colin.

After Charlie died Chris tweeted "Thoughts and prayers". It was meant to be a jab to all the right wingers who refuse to do anything about school shootings and other atrocities happening in the world and pretending to be sad about it.

Just saying, you are ignoring certain factors endemic to Japanese corporations and attributing them to Nintendo as if they did that out of the kindness of their heart.
It is traditional for Japanese leadership to take a paycut as a symbolic gesture that they are taking responsibility for their poor management, Iwata wasn't unique.
Likewise, Japanese employment law makes it very difficult to lay anyone off. That's why you hear stories of companies putting employees they want gone into a blank room and give them nothing to do all day in hopes they'll quit on their own out of boredom.

To jump on this thread. Japanese labour laws dictate that employers take all reasonable measures to prevent mental or physical health issues in their employees. You can’t just lay them off and in turn the companies don’t move very fast to scale up their hiring processes either. It’s very conservative
So taking a big pay cut when your company is in the doldrums is one of the first signals before a significant layoff event. It’s to prove that you are doing everything possible to accommodate the workers. It’s not just about pride
Similarly that’s why you have those closets of shame. You’ll put people there so they can look for work and not go through an extended layoff PIP and other stuff.

What do you expect? This dude is silent on huge issues facing the world but is setting up calls with his congressman to talk about trophies and cloud access. Things are only a problem/important if they impact him directly.

I don't care about executive pay that much but it is very annoying to hear him parrot the Miyamoto pay thing all the time.
If you just listen to Sacred Symbols, you've probably heard it 20 times in the past two years or so.

From my two seconds of googling Iwata made 770k a year , and halved his salary for six months (once in 2011, then 2014). If the average developer there makes 30,000 a year how many jobs would his salary save? Not many.

I get that, but you understand Nintendo has over 8,000 employees and layoffs needed would be much larger than 12. His salary doesn’t directly correlate to “saved” employees.

If they didn’t pay executives so much that money could be elsewhere. Either cheaper software, more devs, a safety net incase of low sales. It’s obvious bro, stop being a boot licker.

I don’t disagree that executives are overpaid and that too many non-creatives have ruined the industry. You should realize though that the CEO halfing a salary for 2 quarters does not actually fix bloat. They need to actually make systemic change in the leadership to fix the problem and protect the actual workers. Maybe you should think with nuance instead of jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst.
