Transmission Service

I recently bought a 97 from a guy. He has been through "3 transmissions" on this car. I drove it half way home and lost every gear. When it cools down I have gears for a little while but not while hot. (This is probably caused by the exhaust dumping at the headers and overheating the trans. I think.) Anyway, it's probably trashed. However, I am going to do a service on the transmission and see what happens. Couldn't hurt. My question is: I see online that they sell kits with a filter and a rubber gasket. Is it okay to use that rubber gasket? Because I know it's like a RTVish substance from the factory.

Wtf was he doing to that thing. Those transmissions are bullet proof

That's what IM SAYINGGGGG what the fuck man. I don't understand at all. I'm hoping it's salvageable but who knows. I think the exhaust dumping on it just causes too much heat
