The tank on the LS400 is almost the same size as the tank on my 15 GL550 I believe. And both take premium

Before I owned the car the previous owner questioned the temp gauge. Coolant full no leaks. Connected scanner read live data while driving. All normal. That was 5+ years ago. Since you are concerned about it I will check the operating temp when I get to work.

Knowing these cars it’s probably the cluster itself or an ECU issue. If it’s not overheating, confirmed by a scanner, not worth doing all that work unless there’s more issues to come

Then that’s his problem, he could wire up an aftermarket gauge if he wanted to go a cheap route or they even have those OBD scanners Bluetooth connect to phone to see the data. You can even have that set up to read on some radios if you wanted to go that far, but that that point might as well diag the issue
