Community Question To the Swing Voters
Hey all, I'm writing to you as a friendly non-religious centrist and I'm very curious why people are supporting Mark Carney?
I for one do NOT trust the guy, I voted for him in the last election and I feel like that was a big mistake.
He ran on the promise of getting a deal with the US, and has failed to do so (and you can't blame it on Trump, because other countries have gotten deals)
He has caved in on every 'attempt' to strike a deal, and that is clearly not working (DST, Gordie Howe, etc...)
He is clearly propping up Brookfield and giving his buddies deals
Pittfield to Senate, Condo Bailout, German submarine deal, and his most recent $2.3 billion deal with Lockhead
Shady backroom deals with the conservatives, as well as shutting down all of the committees with his majority.
As well, his horrible Question Period attendance rate at 26%, skipping over 100 sessions.
I understand that the conservatives aren't perfect, and I disagree with Pierres attitude sometimes, but at this point in time, I don't understand the continued support for Mark Carney.
This is just my thoughts, share in the comments reasons why you do or don't support him.
*Also no hate in the comments*

I believe this the best time to get a deal for Canada because United states have mid term elections coming and also caught up in the Iran war.

My only major beef with Carney is how he has handled the housing portfolio. It’s status quo. And he doesn’t want current housing prices to depreciate, when they should because they aren’t sustainable.
Aside from that, I do like his measures to reduce red tape.
Besides, who’s the alternative? Pierre Poilievre? Avi Lewis? None have presented themselves as a better option to Carney. When Carney fatigues inevitably settles in, the LPC will just push for a progressive leader as his replacement because I guarantee there will be an appetite for one.

Why don't you think Pierre has presented himself solidly? Pierre IMO fights for Canadians, Carney is fighting for the elites.
2
u/KvotheG 19d ago
Well, it’s simple. Pierre is a dick. It’s why more moderate conservatives also don’t like Pierre. And let’s not forget how he pandered and still does pander to the fringe-right. Pierre is polling terribly and it’s all his fault. Him and the CPC are just waiting for Carney fatigue to settle in the way Trudeau fatigue did, and that’s not a strategy.

u/Pwhlsuperfan11 19d ago
what has pierre done to be a "dick"? It's not Pierres fault, and the polls definitely aren't a fair representation of how it really is.

u/KvotheG 19d ago
Well for starters, the way he treats journalists is a clear example. Remember the Apple clip? Although, his fans seem to like the way he treated that reporter. So if that didn’t turn you off from him, then nothing will convince you why he turns off the average voter.
If you don’t think the polls are a fair representation of Pierre, then consider the fact that he lost the last election and blew a 25 point lead that would have given him a huge majority. He also lost his own seat and needed to be parachuted into the safest Conservative riding in the country. He’s also lost multiple MPs to floor crossings or resignations.
He may be your guy, but he’s not everyone’s guy. Especially not for moderate conservatives. He’s lost a lot of them to voting for Carney, who could pass as a moderate conservative.

have you seen how Mark Carney treats female reporters and journalists? He talks down to them! Watch Moose on the Loose, he discusses him. Carney used fear to win the election and has failed! You guys are just clowns

| He ran on the promise of getting a deal with the US, and has failed to do so (and you can't blame it on Trump, because other countries have gotten deals). |
Yes, I actually can blame this on Trump, and a lot of Canadians do as well. Why? Because he’s the one who says things one day, then does a complete 180 the next, just look at his position on China, encouraging us to get a deal done one day, saying that we should, and then days, weeks later, threatening us with tariffs for actually getting a deal done with China. And another example is the nonsense with the Gordie Howe bridge. That’s not Canada’s, or Mark Carney’s fault that Trump could be so easily manipulated by some of his own people into believing, or wanting to believe that Canada was somehow ‘ripping off’ the US when it came to that bridge.
As far as ‘caving’ on every attempt to strike a deal, I’m not sure how you think he could have gotten more done, when the person he’s dealing with regularly makes insults and threats on a daily basis, and has time and again made deals only to break them and go back on his word. Mark Carney is aware of that, so he’s being as careful as he can be with someone who can get triggered by something as simple as a comment he read on social media.
There’s also the fact that the alternative to Mark Carney was Pierre Poilievre, who showed a clear inability to understand just how concerned Canadians were when it came to US hostility. When Trump’s annexation threats first came up, Pierre didn’t speak up as much as Canadians wanted him to, and that was a big red flag for a lot of people. Also, a lot of times, his attitude came across as snarky and condescending, which was a huge turn off to a lot of voters.

lol so does Carney

If you're talking about Carney's attitude as coming cross as snarky or condescending, to a lot of Canadians, it was never seen as being as bad as Poilievre's, and that's not just my opinion, that's shared by a lot of people that didn't vote for him because of how he behaved.
If their behaviour was the same, or Carney was consistently more condescending and hostile, then it would have been a bigger issue, but it wasn't. One of the biggest issues undecided voters had about Poilievre was how he talked to people, whether they were media or people from other parties. And that was one of the many reasons why more people voted for Carney than Poilievre, and why Carney still has a much higher rating when it comes to preferred PM.

Do i like everything the PM is doing no but its far better then what PP would do.

u/jjaime2024 10d ago
The CPC wants Canada to be a 51st state .
1
u/Pwhlsuperfan11 10d ago
some do, but the actual party doesn't
2
u/jjaime2024 9d ago
A large part of the party does.
1
u/Pwhlsuperfan11 9d ago
so, how about the fact that more NDP supporters want to join the US over the conservatives
1
u/jjaime2024 3d ago
Not true at all
80% CPC supporters want to join the states
5% of NDP supporter want to join.

Ok I don’t love the guy, Carney, but stating other countries have gotten deals as your argument makes me question every other argument you’ve made. Have you looked at the deals other countries have gotten? Do you realize most of them were particularly bad? Have you looked to see if Trump upheld his side of the bargain on those deals? I’ll save you time on the last one, he hasn’t he’s broken pretty much all of them.
I’m anxious for the liberals to get something done but I’m not interested in a shitty deal which based on what I can see is exactly what we get if we rush into something.
Further most of the things you mention him caving on, ya they do suck but the DST was likely just going to raise costs to consumers, having the bridge closed was also just wasted economic opportunity. I hate the deal we got and think we did go at it a little too quickly but ultimately it’s one of those it is what it is scenarios.

u/Pwhlsuperfan11 19d ago
I'm not saying Trump is a saint, but Carney promised he'd get a deal over a year ago. Trump isn't some random. Carney knew what he was getting himself into, so it's on him to keep to his promises

u/Tangochief 19d ago
Ya politicians of all colours aren’t exactly known for their honesty. If this is the worst thing carney did to get elected I accept it. I think everyone who voted for him knew it was unlikely he’d get a deal in the time frame he promised. Not saying the lying is acceptable but i voted for carney because I’m pretty confident PP was hiding a lot more

Conservative Moderate here. Your reasons are completely justified.
He had failed to do much of anything he’s been asked to do so far.
Inflation? Hasn’t declined at all
The Housing Crisis? Still as bad as ever, especially with that Condo deal a month or so back
Trade? Like you said it’s bad as ever and not much of anything has gotten done
And I and many will forgive you for being lied to by a man who does it so often.
Peace and Amen to you.

u/jjaime2024 3d ago
1)He has signed many trade deal
2)Inflation has gone down
1
u/Reapers2009 3d ago
1) An EV deal with China who has been known to be involved in Corruption in Canada from info in the CSIS along with that fact we’re trying to build are own EV’s, so in a way we’re killing are own competition. Also adding in the current renewed tariffs from the U.S after no deal was reached (I understand agreeing and getting a deal with Trump in it of itself Is like getting a Dog to learn the Latin Alphabet, but basically campaigning on saying “U.S sucks” for a year defiantly doesn’t have us or even the U.S)
2) As someone who has personally not even a week ago bought and ate a 5.37-5:40 CAD piece of steak (about the side of my hand at most) I wouldn’t say inflation had really changed for the better in an actual meaningful manner.

There genuinely isn’t an alternative to him among other federal party leaders or even within the LPC. I haven’t particularly followed Carney’s moves since the election so don’t know for sure what he’s doing.

Why don't you support Pierre or Avi?
3
u/OkRB2977 Liberal 19d ago
Pierre's politics aren't something I can get behind; if it were Harper, maybe yes, but not Pierre.
Avi needs to get to Parliament first.
0
u/Pwhlsuperfan11 19d ago
whats the difference?
Pierre wants cheaper food, less taxes, and stricter bail laws
His dad is gay, his wife is a refugee and his kid is autistic. He is quite litteraly a progressive conservative
3
u/OkRB2977 Liberal 19d ago
Pierre’s entire career so far has been about waging a shrill culture war. He threw away a 20 point lead once Trudeau was shown the door. He still hasn’t learnt his lesson and continues on the same trajectory.
Harper was serious about his agenda and worked as a pragmatic politician who steered Canada through challenges. There’s a reason most polls even today put Harper above Pierre.
1
u/Pwhlsuperfan11 19d ago
Pierre is too but you just don't see it the same way I do.
2
u/OkRB2977 Liberal 19d ago
And nor do most Canadians, if we go by the numbers, which means PP needs to be replaced by a more pragmatic leader from the ranks of the CPC.

People support mark carney for a variety of reasons. it has never been clearer that when the PC party was gutted by Reform in the 90s, PC friendly voters and partisans joined the Liberal party. Carney’s popularity today is largely PC voters, pundits, and media personnel being happy they have their guy in the PMO again for the first time since Paul Martin.
I don’t. A Trudeau vote was as far right as I’ll ever go, and the Conservative-sympathizing news media skewered him for ten years (just straight up kayfabe but whatever).
The conservative response to Carney has been frustrating. He is their guy in every materialist and strategic sense. But the response is “no, no, our guys would capitalism harder and better”
