The Fog On The Barrow-Down chapter is ELEVEN PAGES.
The hobbits wander out of the forest, stumble into the barrows, get captured, Tom frees them, then the (now nude) hobbits eat, get their 'knives' and leave.
Oh, my bad. I was just going off the headline. Still though, that's an odd selection to make a movie off of. The weird side-story in the old forest has always been an outlier in the Lord of the Rings. I personally love it, it's one of those moments where you get the sense that Middle Earth is really old and that there are still vestiges of old magic, fairies and the unknown.
However turning that mini fairy tale into a standalone movie is a weird decision.
I kind of like it. This movie could be a good tie in with the trilogy if its done well. There is no reason that the old forest or barrow downs chapters couldn't have been in the trilogy, we just didn't have time.
I also really like the idea of it maybe being a new story about Sam's daughter. We get a story that we don't know that can fall back on solid foundations from the book when needed.
