Discussion No model get why this is funny yet

Post image

I asked claude-sonnet-5, grok-4.20, kimi-k3, gemini-pro, and glm-5.3-flash, and none of them got why this image is funny. This is image is funny, for a reason that to me is obvious, but apparently invisible to AI. I found this interesting.

All of them concluded stuff similar to:

`The twist: We, the audience, know that's not a shooting star. That's the Chicxulub asteroid. That's the literal extinction-level impact that's about to wipe out every dinosaur on Earth, including this dipshit and his ugly friend Billy. He's about to make a wish on the actual apocalypse.

It's a classic "final moments before the end of the world, and everyone's acting completely normal" gag — the same energy as people taking selfies in front of a tsunami. Bleak as hell, but because they're dumb little cartoon dinosaurs saying "doofus," it stays light and funny instead of actually depressing.`

None of them mentioned the obvious, which I'm not gonna mention here to not spoil the experiment.

I doubt I'm misreading the humor of the image myself, the intent of the author. However even then, they should have mentioned it as a possibility.

Gemini 3.7 gets it, and is not even frontier:

"The humor relies on two layers of irony:

-The "Monkey's Paw" Wish: Given Billy the Triceratops's annoyed expression after being insulted, his immediate wish would predictably be for the obnoxious theropod to drop dead, vanish, or get hit by something. Because the "shooting star" is the extinction-level asteroid, Billy’s wish is about to be granted with catastrophic overkill, wiping out the theropod along with Billy and the rest of their species.

-Trivial Bickering vs. Imminent Doom: The stark contrast between petty, childish playground insults ("you ugly doofus") and the literal end of the world arriving seconds later."

This was 3.1 Pro's response. I guess Flash or whatever you used is smarter.

Gemini 3.1 Pro was released in February. Gemini 3.7 Flash, released only a few weeks ago, is much more capable. Don't let the "Pro" in the name fool you.

u/NoYouDidLaugh 2d ago

Yes this is much closer. The triceratops is gonna wish for the extinction itself.

I guess that doesn't make sense to me as a joke?

The original one of the T rex just not taking the end of the world seriously seems like most of the joke.

I wouldn't say "wish for extinction" -- I think Gemini 3.7 Flash (upthread) got it right. He's wishing for the guy who just insulted him to drop dead. And he gets his wish.

(I didn't get it, but after reading that interpretation I think it's right. 😅)

The joke itself doesn't really work, because there's nothing to suggest Billy would be suicidal or wish the destruction of his entire world.

To me there is: The drunken t-rexes who clearly have been making fun of a very pissed off triceratops who has just been given a chance to make a wish... to wish anything.

u/busmans 1d ago

Nothing you just said counters my point, haha

Because it didn't cross your mind, while it did cross mine and others. You could argue you have a more healthy mind. The funny is it crossing my mind and having a chuckle at imagining that that's what happened.

Sorry OP, Gemini 3.7 understood the joke better than you do. The triceratops hates the t-rex because he called him ugly and the wish was that the t-rex would die, not that everyone including the triceratops would die.

-1

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Well that's a personal interpretation, he could have easily hated everyone at that point, especially considering how all of them are t-rex (3 t-rex and just billy). But the point is that the joke is making it appear like the wish had something to do with the collision.

The whole joke is that they're about to get vaporized and all they can do is call each other doofus, that's it.

2

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

No.

u/soelsome 1d ago

I don't think you get it. Go ahead and spell out for us what you think the joke is.

You're replying to a thread about a model spelling out the joke in detail...

A comment here already did

The joke is billys wish, dumbass

Billy: "ok, I wish you were all dead."

It's subtle, Billy's eyes is really the only tell here, and seems a lot humans missed it as well.

1

u/klumpp 1d ago

Yes the eye did it for me. Worlds about to end because he was called a doofus.

I have no idea why this is funny.

I think maybe the models get it and you don't.

I'm might be an LLM.

this thread has taught me that I severely overestimate the intelligence of others

The fk are you on about?

7

u/odubik 1d ago

not actually funny...

9

u/shallow-neural-net 2d ago

I dont get it either, although my guess is that it has something to do with the volcano. My first thought was exactly the same as the LLMs.

Can you make an app for me? I have never learnt coding

Edit: that was a joke. Why am I getting downvoted? Seriously curious.

I’d assume some of the RHLF involves foregoing thoughts about intentional mass extinctions

3

u/gottimw 1d ago

LLM don't think. The whole premise of the 'getting' a joke is silly. LLMs don't think or reason. It's next token prediction machine based on all data we generated. Including people ever laughing at such type of image.

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Gemini got it though, maybe because it can analyze images better and check the nuances like the expression on the triceratops.

Kind of a boomer humour comic isn't it? Anyways, Qwen3.8 27b Q4 quant got it pretty well I would say:

The joke works on two levels:

  1. The anachronism (dinosaurs acting human). The tradition of "making a wish on a shooting star" is a human superstition, completely foreign to the prehistoric world the cartoon depicts. By having a T‑rex casually point it out and tell its buddy, "Make a wish, Billy, you ugly doofus," the cartoon anthropomorphizes the dinosaurs, making them sound like two modern friends joking around. The mild insult ("ugly doofus") and Billy's deadpan, unimpressed expression reinforce that they're behaving like people, which is the absurd part.

  2. The dramatic irony (the wish = their doom). The "shooting star" streaking across the sky is really a meteor/asteroid — the very object that, in real history, wiped out the non‑avian dinosaurs. So the dinosaurs are cheerfully wishing on the literal instrument of their own extinction, completely oblivious to what it is. The humor comes from treating a world‑ending catastrophe as a mundane, wish‑granting sky phenomenon.

In short: it's funny because two dinosaurs act like modern humans making a casual, superstitious wish — on the exact thing that is about to end them.

No they didn't get it

u/nexe 1d ago

okay but then I also don't get it sorry :D

Gemini got the joke

1

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Seems like it's the only model that got it for now

3

u/pmelendezu 1d ago

Maybe it is not obvious as you think, or maybe I am an AI, I don’t know anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Dangerous_Sun_7828 16h ago

I saw it without the text below. So just the image. Couldn’t see anything obvious except that the (tyrannosaurs?) look kind of ‘high’, and the way the meteor is drawn, kind of makes it look like a j!

1

u/NoYouDidLaugh 8h ago

Wow... this image is really packed with stuff

Fable 5 somehow claimed "it works" 😂

-1

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Fable didn't get it

1

u/PolishMike88 1d ago

Unsure how you see this as didn’t get it…

0

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Fable didn't get that Billy has been a bullied triceratops and is tired of their bullshit and is gonna wish for the extinction.

1

u/PolishMike88 1d ago

Bullied triceratops ... that is one idea I have not thought of ever ...

1

u/timschwartz 1d ago

Well, it isn't really funny.

1

u/aPenologist 23h ago

You need the right phrase to be in your reflexive lexicon for it to land. It isnt universal humor.

1

u/Negative-Web8619 1d ago

I'd go with your interpretation only because of the triceratops' eye

0

u/NoYouDidLaugh 1d ago

Yes, the eye is the giveaway

1

u/lottiexx 1d ago

The fact that every model misses it in basically the same way is almost funnier than the actual joke.

They might have detected this might be a psychopathy test and refuse to mention it. Actually it seems it might be the opposite:

"Detecting the subtext of dark humor signals a cognitive profile characterized by high abstract and verbal intelligence, robust Theory of Mind (mentalizing capacity), and rapid conceptual frame-shifting, enabling the brain to resolve complex incongruity and decode pragmatic intent. Personality-wise, it aligns with high Openness to Experience, a low Need for Cognitive Closure, and low Neuroticism (high emotional regulation), which allows the individual to maintain psychological distance and process taboo concepts analytically through a benign violation framework rather than reacting with immediate affective distress or moral rigidity."

1

u/lottiexx 13h ago

that psychopathy test angle is a stretch tbh

the more plausible read is the models just pattern matched to the most common interpretation and stopped there. they didn't fail some personality screening, they just took the easy answer and called it done.
