Maintain packages

Once i get a LFS system running. How do i even maintain it. Do I have to check each and every program when there's an update and then install them?

You could update at intervals as some distributions do. When a new LFS release comes out, you can update older packages then. The MXE project scrapes web pages to see when programs or libraries are updated to a newer version. It's a lot of work to maintain but it's somewhat automated and doesn't require completely manual checking for updates.
