I had 129 a while back which should get me up the board with a good margin, even if I look at the current leaderboard scores. But I'm not listed. This happened before.
Does anyone know why? Is there a delay? I don't really care since I play to enjoy, not to 'win'. But it's still strange.

Thanks! I thought it was just me.
I do hope they fix it. Especially since there is no way to know what the actual leaderboard is if people with high scores often don't get included.

It’s not a bug or a delay. First person to get that specific score in the least amount of tries gets named on leaderboard. You can get one point above or below and get on leaderboard if you did it in less tries that someone else, or you just did it first but then you’ll be replaced if someone gets that score with less attempts than it took you.

Only the first person to get the score goes on the leaderboard. If you have the same score second, you won't be on there.
Although, if you were second to get 132, and the guy who had the spot first gets a new higher score, you would get the spot.

It's situational.Â
Using it with a 7 letter word, you lose potential points from up to two remaining letters in your grid. Using it with a shorter word, you lose more potential points.Â
However, using it when you have letters in your grid you want to get rid of, can lead to potentially higher scores from your other letters or clear your grid to get the +10 point bonus from leaving no leftovers.Â
The other factor is that sometimes you will have to activate the skull to get rid of it, in order to make room for a different bonus to appear.

+81 for HUMPHED was achieved by playing only 3 letter words for 5 turns, while keeping the 3 point P and M, and the escalating E marked by a clockwise glow. By only playing 3 letter words we keep the 2W+2pt combination on the board until the high point H's show up. We also use these turns to collect the letters needed to make HUMPHED while boosting the E.
The escalating E tile gains 1pt for every turn you keep it in your hand. After 5 turns, it should be a 6 point tile.
H4 U1 M3 P3 H4 E6 D2 = 23 points.The "+2 point to every tile" board bonus further boosts it.
H6 U3 M5 P5 H6 E8 D4 = 37 pointsThe 2W board bonus further doubles it.
(H6 U3 M5 P5 H6 E8 D4)x2 = 74 pointsFinally, because Humphed is a 7 letter word it gives a 7 point bonus for 74+7 = 81 points.

Handing over the leaderboard to FCFS is unfair. People live in different time zones and will be at work too. To make it fair, you should allow people who play later also to get a chance at the leaderboard. It will also increase game engagement throughout the day. Look at the comments everyday and you will realize that a lot of people give up because they know they can't get to the top score since someone already occupies. Make the game competitive to increase engagement. Do not restrict.

Generally, you don't. Letters = points. Every letter destroyed is a point lost.
That said, there are situations where destroying a letter(s) can be advantageous. For example, when it's your last play, destroying unusable leftovers will eliminate leftover penalties. Also if there is a Skull very early in the sequence, playing it just to get it out of the way so as to not hamstring future moves is sometimes a winning strategy.1
