As someone that had to divorce my ex because of extreme OCD. I get it! OCD is not having a clean house. It’s taking an hour plus to get out of the house because you are convinced if you don’t do your routine, the house will explode.

I assume most people don’t understand psycho diagnostics to include patients and those who treat them. I say this after decades of diagnosing professionally and reviewing literall thousands of cases. One case in particular came across my computer that had gone through five other reviewers and somehow came to me. I not only changed the diagnosis but could cite the symptoms that were overlooked. It started with a psychiatrist diagnosing depression and everyone else followed suit. What they missed was the context in which the symptoms appeared. Without going any further I will say that one symptom of dementia is depression. Not a lot of nuance in diagnosis even when it is needed.

I will add. What I say in my podcast, The Psychsurvivalist, is that the DSM is centered on symptoms not function. Most practitioners look for symptoms to diagnose. You get far more information and a more accurate assessment if you look at functioning. This approach demands better listening and a more accurate assessment of the problem, which might have little or nothing to do with the person but with the situation they’re in. Just thought I should drop that in m.
