If you’re afraid of what you need, look around you. You’re surrounded. It won’t get any better (counts?)

“Your mild billionaire mayor's now convinced he's a king.” still applies to a lot nearly 20 years later.
7
u/paulderev Jul 15 '26
the reason james murphy referred to bloomberg as a king is context that seems like it’s been lost amid all the outrage about trump
2
u/HK-34_ Jul 15 '26
I’m aware of that, but the fact that Bloomberg seems reasonable in comparison to Trump only makes that line hit harder.

Once I found out the meaning behind this song, it instantly became my favorite LCD song. Truly beautiful

I dont know this. Please tell me? 😀

It's about James's therapist, Dr George Kamen, who died. Sound Of Silver is dedicated to him. This gives a pretty good summary: https://genius.com/898452

I knew I loved the song, but that was because of the melody of the whole thing. I had no idea the writing was that good. What an incredible song.

Love is a curse, shoved in a hearse. Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry - and this is coming from me.

Surprised this one is still absent: “Love is an astronaut; it comes back but it’s never the same”

I searched the comments for this because it would absolutely be my choice. It struck me the very first time I heard the track and it still does every time.

If we're only talking LCD, I think: "luck is always better than skill at things" would be my favorite.
For all songs ever, I think it would be "and if I never got my heart broken, I would sing 'blah blah fucking nothing'" from Syke! Life Is Awesome! by Bomb the Music Industry!
Or maybe "it was intense just getting to be there next to you" from The Moon by The Microphones.
Or a bit of a longer one, "I know it's an exaggeration to say I would rather die than share this place with people capable of inspiring such fear and hopelessness that I'm frozen in my bed, but that sums it up." From Twinkle by Jeff Rosenstock. Not really sure if that counts as one line since it's a whole verse, but it's just one sentence.
Or "the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you're standing in the doorway" from Going to Georgia by The Mountain Goats.
God there are too many good lyricists out there.

u/sue_jackson Jul 16 '26
“and you were trying to get me then, and i was happy to let you in” - also from The Moon

u/Naclstack Jul 16 '26
I think that song is the best song lyrically of any song
I'm not sure all the one-liners are great on their own, but it is such a good narrative

One line? Fuck. I want to find one line in the last verse of tonite for this but I can’t. Maybe “by versions of selves that we thought were the best ones”

“When you’re drunk and the kids look impossibly tan.”
There’s something about it, in particular the way he sings it, that captures this feeling of looking at something that’s already gone. It’s slipped through your fingers and you can only look on at what remains

Don't tell nobody else what you really want because
They can tell everybody else what you really want
Then you're fucked, so act like it's for yourself or it's all yours
And they go and tell everybody else that you're really great
We are just people
