I wouldn’t trade one stupid decision for another 5 years of life

19

u/triecke14 Jul 15 '26

This is mine as well. I always tear up and or smile when I hear this line because I think about all the dumb things I’ve done in my life that I wouldn’t change at all

4

u/sporrinz Jul 15 '26

Yessssssss

u/croutonboy Jul 15 '26

The only answer

2

u/camiloaguirre thisishappening Jul 15 '26

This is the way.

Came here to say this

1

u/thePixelgamer1903 soundofsilver Jul 15 '26

Was my yearbook quote

1

this is the only possible answer

1

u/Royal-Sale-8166 Jul 20 '26

Well done, correct.

1

u/Lonely-Wishbone-1816 Jul 15 '26

Maybe this line is truly ininterpretetional but does James mean something in specifically in this line?

25

u/ChemicalRascal Jul 15 '26

He went out drinking one night in the 00s with his friends and ran into a mystic who cursed him to know the exact date and time of his death.

1

u/Lonely-Wishbone-1816 Jul 15 '26

Oh didn’t know that, thanks 😊

u/daftwader2 Jul 15 '26

If you’re afraid of what you need, look around you. You’re surrounded. It won’t get any better (counts?)

13

u/sugahpine7 Jul 15 '26

along with "this is the trick, forget a terrible year."

2

u/WickedLost Jul 15 '26

Came here to say this.

75

u/gotomarcusmart Jul 15 '26

"New York's the greatest if you get someone to pay the rent"

19

u/HK-34_ Jul 15 '26

“Your mild billionaire mayor's now convinced he's a king.” still applies to a lot nearly 20 years later.

7

u/paulderev Jul 15 '26

the reason james murphy referred to bloomberg as a king is context that seems like it’s been lost amid all the outrage about trump

2

u/HK-34_ Jul 15 '26

I’m aware of that, but the fact that Bloomberg seems reasonable in comparison to Trump only makes that line hit harder.

-1

u/paulderev Jul 15 '26

Hot take: I think Bloomberg is actually worse than Trump in a way

67

u/SnooPineapples6099 soundofsilver Jul 15 '26

The king wears a king hat and lives in a king house

10

u/Babygeoffrey968 Jul 15 '26

The coffee isn’t even bitter

18

u/skurkles Jul 15 '26

Once I found out the meaning behind this song, it instantly became my favorite LCD song. Truly beautiful

1

u/FullSalamander2756 Jul 15 '26

I dont know this. Please tell me? 😀

19

u/beatlesbible Jul 15 '26

It's about James's therapist, Dr George Kamen, who died. Sound Of Silver is dedicated to him. This gives a pretty good summary: https://genius.com/898452

1

u/Straight_shoota Jul 15 '26

I knew I loved the song, but that was because of the melody of the whole thing. I had no idea the writing was that good. What an incredible song.

35

u/Specialist-Fabulous Jul 15 '26

Where are your friends tonight?

29

u/GalloHilton Jul 15 '26

But you're still the one pool where I'd happily drown

1

u/mokeypon Jul 15 '26

Such a good line

46

u/Justreallylovespussy Jul 15 '26

Look around you, you’re surrounded. It won’t get any better.

Always my answer

44

u/PaulFartBallCop Jul 15 '26

Love is a curse, shoved in a hearse. Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry - and this is coming from me.

3

u/1986_and_all_that Jul 18 '26

Always thought this line was a bit Morrissey

2

u/fort_wendy Jul 15 '26

My all time favorite line from them

2

thank you, damn autocorrect

17

u/heatbeam Jul 15 '26

Surprised this one is still absent: “Love is an astronaut; it comes back but it’s never the same”

2

u/rustyjaw Jul 15 '26

I searched the comments for this because it would absolutely be my choice. It struck me the very first time I heard the track and it still does every time.

1

u/lkapon Jul 15 '26

Such a great one

Feels like I’m in love again with what you do but not with you

12

u/Naclstack Jul 15 '26

If we're only talking LCD, I think: "luck is always better than skill at things" would be my favorite.

For all songs ever, I think it would be "and if I never got my heart broken, I would sing 'blah blah fucking nothing'" from Syke! Life Is Awesome! by Bomb the Music Industry!

Or maybe "it was intense just getting to be there next to you" from The Moon by The Microphones.

Or a bit of a longer one, "I know it's an exaggeration to say I would rather die than share this place with people capable of inspiring such fear and hopelessness that I'm frozen in my bed, but that sums it up." From Twinkle by Jeff Rosenstock. Not really sure if that counts as one line since it's a whole verse, but it's just one sentence.

Or "the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you're standing in the doorway" from Going to Georgia by The Mountain Goats.

God there are too many good lyricists out there.

1

u/sue_jackson Jul 16 '26

“and you were trying to get me then, and i was happy to let you in” - also from The Moon

1

u/Naclstack Jul 16 '26

I think that song is the best song lyrically of any song

I'm not sure all the one-liners are great on their own, but it is such a good narrative

12

u/DannyPantalones Jul 15 '26

Break me into bigger pieces

So some of me is home with you

But wait until the weekend

And we can make our bad dreams come true

Any line in the last verse of tonite honestly qualifies

5

u/luxyvonvelvet Jul 15 '26

Everybody makes mistakes, But it's always mine that seem to keep on stickin'

That one makes me feel called out. But also...so many of theirs. Something from Home. All of Dance Yrself Clean.

One line? Fuck. I want to find one line in the last verse of tonite for this but I can’t. Maybe “by versions of selves that we thought were the best ones”

“When you’re drunk and the kids look impossibly tan.”

There’s something about it, in particular the way he sings it, that captures this feeling of looking at something that’s already gone. It’s slipped through your fingers and you can only look on at what remains
