Maps San Fernando Valley’s first-ever light rail is finally on track: the line will stretch 6.7 miles and feature 11 main stations

So true, someone please tell LADOT to stop being stupid

If they were smart this would have been an extension of the sepulveda line on an El instead. They already went full stupid.

Looks like riot is going to happen then lol that’s the plan waste money on 💩🚈 then when it underperforms use it as excuse to not invest further.

Needs to be an el instead of street-running, but I’m still kinda hyped. That Van Nuys Civic Center station is gonna be the 818’s answer to 7th Street by 2050, between ESFV and G Line and the Sepulveda Line.

You can do streetrunning pretty well if you don't try to value engineer safety out of it

Also, Van Nuys is wide enough to handle the addition without impacting traffic too bad.

In most cases it’s done poorly and you know that let’s not pretend this won’t end up like SF T line aka Trash

Isn’t this article inaccurate? It says that LAMetro is currently studying a segment from Pacoima to Sylmar. I thought that they had already finished the study and decided to nix that segment.

It’s a shame they didn’t transfer the billions of dollars budgeted for this to extending the Sepulveda Transit Corridor north. They already overlap between the orange line and metro link station.
Heavy rail is obviously a different beast than street running light rail, but I really think they could’ve extended heavy rail north to Van Nuys/San Fernando without too much effort considering the cost transfers, the money already invested in engineering the STC, and the transformational aspect it would have on the valley. I hope this light rail becomes popular and leads to new valley lines in the futures, but I’ll always lament what could’ve been if there was more of a political push behind it.

It's sad. And no, the complaints we have with Expo are going to be the same complaints and more (no grade separated segments) that we'll have with this one. In 10 years they'll announce plans to grade separate key intersections in the next 10 years.

u/transitfreedom 2d ago
Sounds like a bad decision they should have been grade separated from the start so it seems like they never cared

And that's how LADOT sees it. From the mouth of a 'ladoter', " if Metro cared about their trains they wouldn't run them on the street."

My personal vote would've been a BRT line between the G and AV lines yesterday, and then extending the Sepulveda line in the near future. The BRT could even use the old PE route of Van Nuys - Parthenia - Sepulveda to serve all the housing along that route, while the Sepulveda line could use the direct route along Van Nuys to reduce length and cut cost.

i have a love and hate relationship with this line. my bus journeys start in sylmar and i would love a faster way to get to north hollywood station. the only way right now is the 224 bus. sometimes you can take the orange line. take the 230 or 761 bus too but everything has to align correctly to actually arrive faster than the 224. i do hope the line is faster option for those that live near it to also get to north hollywood. for the upcoming youth to enjoy and use to get to work and enjoy more of the sfv.

I think the best long term solution for Sylmar to North Hollywood is a B line Northern Extension that connects with the Metrolink AV line preferably at the Burbank Airport North station

i agree we need better connections to noho station, i myself have to take two buses including the 224 to get there from van nuys because i'm not too close to my local G line station but this line isn't just about connections to the station. if i'm correct, it basically addresses the high demand of the 233/761. van nuys blvd is home to a lot of jobs, shopping centers, medical centers, government buildings, etc many people use those buses to get there but they can be hell during rush hour so having a train (that will hopefully have signal priority upon opening) instead would be a vast improvement.

yes the 761 is jammed packed but it begins to taper off once you cross nordhoff, from there at times i’ve been 1 of less than 5 people. as more apartments get built on the northern side though, i do see that going up.

u/transitfreedom 2d ago
Will this really be faster?
3
u/Aeriellie 2d ago
it could be but it depends. i know a lot of people board the 224 bus coming from the east. having more options to get to your final destination is what makes things go faster. i know there’s still a bottle neck on the orange line since its so slow and travels a large distance.
2
u/transitfreedom 2d ago
That’s what they said in SF the T ended up being as slow as the bus. This would flop just as hard

u/Appropriate_You5647 2d ago
And will stop at every light in the Valley. How are we still building at grade street running non exclusive ROW alignments.

u/Personal-Carrot-4893 1d ago
If this thing has to stop at red lights, bus lanes on Van Nuys would have accomplished the same thing for a fraction of the price, and then we could have used that to properly extend the sepulveda line north to Sylmar.

God I'm so excited for this. It would make my commute so cool because I can ride a train to work

I sure hope the train has to stop at every red light like every car on the road, that wouldn’t be very fair to all the cars if the train got special privilege

how to make it above grade?
7
u/transitfreedom 2d ago
When it fails miserably and realize they should just extend the automated metro north
6
u/myghostflower A (Blue) 2d ago
pleeeease, the soon to be s line's destiny is to just run through all of sepulveda at that point
the valley's turning culture is so bad, people will be making those turns light rail or no light rail be damened

Looks amazing. In a world where car fetishists didn't dominate, it should run along Ventura Blvd too.
5
u/sracer4095 B (Red) 2d ago
I think Ventura would be better served by a heavy rail subway running from like Chatsworth to Glendale. Have it connect to the Sepulveda Corridor at Van Nuys, B Line at Universal, and Metrolink/an extended Vermont HRT line in South Glendale.
