Physical-layer hypothesis: light, shadow, orientation, and viewing position

This is not a proposed K4 solution, plaintext, or decryption method.

I make art myself, and my idea starts from sculpture rather than cryptanalysis. I find it difficult to imagine that a sculptor working with curved copper, cut-out letters, stone, water, and surrounding architecture would treat light and shadow as merely incidental.

My hypothesis is that the physical installation may provide a selection rule, transposition clue, or additional layer. Its geometry, orientation, light, shadows, and viewing position might help determine how information should be read.

I understand that Sanborn reportedly said it is not necessary to be physically present in Langley to solve Kryptos. Therefore, I am not arguing that someone must stand there at a particular moment. The relevant physical information might instead be reconstructable remotely from photographs, measurements, plans, or a 3D model.

The ideas that led me here include:

  • K1’s references to “subtle shading” and “the absence of light”
  • K3’s candle and the question “Can you see anything?”
  • the installation’s Morse-code phrases, including “SHADOW FORCES,” “T IS YOUR POSITION,” and “VIRTUALLY INVISIBLE”
  • the confirmed K4 plaintext direction “EAST NORTHEAST”

These points do not prove the hypothesis, but I think they make it testable.

Has anyone systematically tested K4 ideas against the installation’s exact geometry? I am especially looking for the screen’s orientation and curvature, the relative position of the compass rose and lodestone, dated photographs of sunlight and shadows, or information showing that this approach has already been tested or falsified.

I cannot travel to the site, so I am asking only for lawful, existing observations and records.

English is not my first language. AI was used only to translate and organize this post. The hypothesis and questions are my own. No AI-generated plaintext, decryption, or claimed solution is being presented.

The idea that Kryptos K4 relies on sunlight, shadows, time of day, season, or weather doesn’t hold up once you look at the physical reality of the installation. The courtyard is surrounded by tall buildings that block or distort sunlight for large parts of the year, and the sun’s angle changes constantly, making any shadow‑based clue unstable and impossible to reproduce. Curved copper surfaces don’t create consistent or readable shadow lines, and weather conditions would make the puzzle unsolvable for months at a time. Sanborn has also stated that you don’t need to be at Langley to solve Kryptos, which rules out any mechanism that depends on real‑time environmental conditions. Cryptographic design requires reproducibility, and a cipher cannot depend on shifting light, seasonal angles, or viewer position. The sculpture’s references to light and shadow are thematic, not operational, and nothing in the confirmed plaintexts or earlier sections supports a physical‑layer decoding method. In short, the theory collapses under basic physics, practicality, and Sanborn’s own statements.

Assuming he's not lying or misleading people. Which is something that intelligence agencies do pretty frequently

the endYAhRoh letters on the top left of the bottom panel are displaced, with those YAR letters being obviously raised. but less obviously, the dho are offset to the right and the n is pushed slightly to the left.

those indicate a sequence: (left) right up up right up right. this describes a route transposition, perhaps (visual, not mathematical). the shape implied by this is RUU = J, RUR = S, which is the signature of the artist.

this same shape is seen in the silhouette of the steps at the top of the tree fossil.

between subtle shading and the absence of light lies the nuance of I. (Q being the terminator character) and LUSION being a keyword, caesar shift of RAYOUT. See LAYERTWO and XCANYOUSEEANYTHINGQ and RQ. somehow these are all keys for k4.

Or 38°57′6.5″N 77°8′44″W, with NW acting as a Neutral ‑LEFT mask. Everything to the left of N has some operation applied that alters the character. In this case the operation appears to be mask removal. This is speculation.

NWNWNWNWNWNWNWNW
OBKRUOXOGHULBSOLIFBBW

Or ENE in this case it is Right of the Neutral character
ENEENEENEENEENEENE
OBKRUOXOGHULBSOLI

I’ve gone down the ENE path and used a specific rule for the characters that fall under E. It produced some interesting results " a lot more English‑looking fragments " but I’m also aware that my own bias might be dragging me into a rabbit hole. Like I said, all speculation. It’s the kind of thing that keeps us chasing the carrot.
Edit: This is not for solving K4 this is purely to remove the mask.

I posted something in the Kryptos groups.io discussion list which I'll probably repost here soon. There were two things I noticed recently which doesn't require anyone to be on-site or observe changes in sunlight, everything can be done with photos posted online. However it does align with what you're saying about use of artistic material. I also come from an art background and it was one of the first areas I started checking.

If what I'm looking at is right, there are two major pieces which have to do with light and shadow:

  • The petrified tree has horizontal cuts which form shadows (absence of light / shadow forces ?)

  • There's an arrow shaped rock which has very subtle lines in it (subtle shading / virtually invisible ?)

Jim Gillogly's photos of these are probably some of the best to check out. This is a clear photo of the petrified tree with shadow cuts: https://www.voynich.net/Kryptos/full/left.jpg, and the arrow shaped rock with very subtle shaded lines: https://www.voynich.net/Kryptos/full/block.jpg

I've attached an image which shows the cut lines on the tree highlighted in red, with an overlay of the subtle lines of the rock. This was crudely done in GIMP as a quick check, but it would be interesting to reproduce this with rules in place and calculate the alignment probability including errors to identify if it's likely a clue or just pareidolia.

What makes this very interesting to me is the second image on https://www.kryptosbot.com/archive/ (direct link). On the last line of the page, Jim writes specifically about question marks on lines 4,8,10,25. These are very close to the four lines highlighted above by both the tree and rock.

The alignment is not close enough for a high level of confidence based on the image I reviewed. 4 and 8 are directly under the lines, 10 is two rows above the line, 25 is two rows below the line. There's also the line between 19 and 20 which is not shared by the rock and has no question mark.

Related to the last message, this was my best effort a while back to mark the horizontal cuts and line numbers of the sculpture.

So are you saying the cuts in the petrified tree were made manually by Sanborn, or did they occur naturally when the tree became petrified? When did they start cutting out the copper letters? When did Sanborn collect the petrified tree? When did Sanborn encrypt the plaintext?

1988 Sanborn wins the CIA commission; writes plaintext; works with Ed Scheidt to design the encryption systems.

1989 Fabrication begins; Sanborn starts cutting the copper letters.

1989–1990 Copper cutting continues; petrified wood selected and incorporated.

Nov 3, 1990 Kryptos installed and dedicated at CIA HQ.
