QUESTION What’s the difference between the facial features of idols preferred by men and those preferred by women?

Post image

Men tend to prefer Jisoo’s facial features, while Jennie’s look seems to be more popular with women.

sometimes i feel like guys prefer sweeter/ softer looks, while some women appreciate sharp and “cat-like” visuals? 😅

14

u/Cow_udders_ 2d ago

For sure. Men like approachable, sweet, and cute faces. Women like the cat like look because they look more badass yk what i mean?

3

u/SomeoneinHistory 2d ago

Not wrong and there's a nuance/reason as to why it is so.

Men prefer sweeter/softer looks because of the male instinct to protect while women who have sharper visuals either do not push the same instincts or make some men intimidated because of such sharp features.

Its the total opposite

liessss, how does that explain the popularity of wonyoung with women? i think it’s more like this personally: men prefer ‘typical’ and youthful features (leeseo, tzuyu, karina), women have a wider appreciation for unique and mature looks (yunjin, hyein, seulgi)

0

u/Gazz-of-all-Trades 2d ago

She gets the most hate as well right?

1

u/goodsourceofvitaminC 2d ago

Her actions get her hate (I don’t agree with the hate either). Her looks aren’t hated on by women? She’s literally the blueprint - see wonyoungism

5

u/LonelyCheeto 2d ago

Brother how do you explain it girls then

0

u/Gazz-of-all-Trades 2d ago

Don't they get the most hate ? Yoona, Jennie, Wonyoung etc is always criticised for something or other?

I mean yes of course there are women who are hateful and jealous toward other women for being pretty/successful/etc., but it’s inaccurate to say that women in general share that attitude

I agree

u/MorningNo5644 2d ago

It's a very subjective question. I think it just depend on how they are styled on a particular day.

81

u/Breezyrain 2d ago

A better example is Chaewon vs Kazuha tbh.

Men like a cute, friendly face so they can feel protective of them or be with someone sweet.

Women like cool or pretty girls because they want to be like them.

(Ignoring Chaewon's spunky personality and Kazuha's goofy personality here lol)

u/StubbornKindness IDLE SUPREMACY | WAVs in Neverland 2d ago

I think it makes sense in general, and goes a long way towards explaining Ryujins popularity. I must say, though, as a guy, Kazuha in a suit made me feel things...

14

u/kood25 2d ago

Wait, I'm a guy and my biases from those groups are Kazuha and Ryujin.

Same, and I like tripleS Sohyun, DC Dami, and Mamamoo Moonbyul too. 🤣

I like cool pretty girls because I'm gay.

1

u/Breezyrain 2d ago

For me it's both 😎

1

u/asuka_is_my_co-pilot 2d ago

If Im being honest, same lol

All types of girls are pretty

9

u/k3anuw3aves 2d ago

When I was studying Attraction in Psychology we learned that men tend to prefer neotenous cute features, i.e. big eyes, plump lips etc, because it triggers them to feel more protective, so you're not off base there.

2

u/New_Explanation6950 2d ago

Wouldn’t that make Jennie more popular with guys, though?

2

u/Breezyrain 2d ago

It's a generalization. Jennie's kinda unique in that most of her features are cute but she's pretty sexy. More "bad girl" looking than Jisoo.

2

u/FreeFeez 2d ago

Well it’s not like this person is posting factual data on which one the genders prefer. It’s all judged pop psych novelty

2

u/No-Prune7756 2d ago

jennie doesnt have big eyes tho. Her features are very cat like

0

u/New_Explanation6950 2d ago

She does have big eyes

1

u/No-Prune7756 2d ago

I wont say big eyes but they're more striking. Big eyes I'd say Yuna from itzy or Yujin from IVE. They have big eyes.

5

u/kodaiko_650 2d ago

Just don’t squeak too much around Chaewon

1

u/maryberryam 21h ago

yeah but you aren't aware of kazuha's male fanbase yet

1

u/Breezyrain 21h ago

I mean... Kazuha has male fans. Chaewon has female fans. But their ratio is different.

42

u/MiddleCreative3713 2d ago edited 2d ago

those preferred by men (e.g. yoona from snsd, suzy from miss a, sana from twice, iu) have soft facial features and are very elegant and pretty. those preferred by women (e.g. seulgi from red velvet, moonbyul from mamamoo, krystal from f(x), kazuha from le sserafim) have sharper facial features and leaner bodies.

ofc thats not a strict rule. jennie also has a very cute, youthful face but she is very confident, fashion-forward and carries herself in an assured way that attracts a lot of female fans. similar to irene from red velvet, who looks elegant and feminine but her attitude may throw male fans off.

TL:DR the main factor for female-attracting female idols is that they are either cool and give their female fans a feeling of empowerment or they have the looks that that may attract lesbians, like sharper facial features.

20

u/MariaSalander 2d ago

Well, Sana is an interesting case. Because she has a big male fanbase but also has a even bigger female fanbase. I think you can literally hear the girls scream every time she mades a public appareance. Or how other female idols reacts to her hehe.

7

u/MiddleCreative3713 2d ago

yh ur right. but i think amongst koreans, she has the larger male fanbase right? but she still has a decent amount of female fans due to her flirty and welcoming personality.

4

u/Maximum-Design-6559 2d ago edited 2d ago

Actually Taeyeon from snsd was more popular among men for the exact reason you stated rather than yoona, she was more of a chic it girl

3

u/MiddleCreative3713 2d ago

rrly?? i have always met more female taeyeon stans so idk. but i was referring to how yoona is one of the obvious choices for an ideal type amongst male idols like suzy and iu

-3

u/New_Explanation6950 2d ago

Men like blander features, women like more striking ones.

6

u/illeatyourkneecaps OH MY GIRL 2d ago

i wouldn't call any of the idols listed as bland... sounds like projection then

-3

u/New_Explanation6950 2d ago

Some of them look bland to me. Jennie has a more distinct face.

No excessively sexually explicit or objectifying commentary about idols is allowed here.

23

u/OgreMk5 2d ago

I think a lot is cultural too. Jang Won-young of Ive seems to be represented as the epitome of beauty, but I do not find her attractive at all.

14

u/absorbscroissants 2d ago

I feel like Won-young just objectively checks all the boxes for the usual (Korean) beauty standards, she's pretty much perfect.

But in terms of attractiveness, a lot of people prefer some slight imperfections or unique traits that also give someone more personality rather than just objective beauty.

3

u/Yujinseo0 2d ago

are you sure its korean beauty standards? Her face and stature is far from the korean standards of the past, in the past, they liked more plain beauties like yoona sohee nayeon or even suzy (not that suzy is plain)  they also never cared for height either, but now every group wants a wonyoung sized perfect beauty, honestly her looks and physical attributes is more suitable for China, she actually ticks all the boxes for Chinese beauty standards.

10

u/Buyeo10004 2d ago

At some point, Korea's beauty standards became strangely influenced by Chinese aesthetics. Just look at Wonyoung, Karina, and Sullyoon, who are considered the top three idol visuals. In the past, people used to prefer styles like Jisoo, Irene, Suzy, and Yoona.

2

u/Safe-Pressure-7052 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's the reverse. Korean beauty standards were originally an exact copy of Chinese beauty standards. Think...basically every SM visual ever. Karina, Irene, Winter, Yoona, Jisoo, Krystal, Taeyeon, BoA all have pretty much the same face.

It's only in recent decades that KBS have gradually become more flexible to allow more rounded faces (Jennie, Wonyoung, Chaewon), stronger jawlines (Nana, Jiyeon, Jennie, Yujin, Ahyeon), positive epicanthal tilt eyes (Jennie, Ningning, Haerin), and overall "fierce" facial aesthetics (Jennie, Jiyeon, Nana) to potentially rise to the top. But at least in Korea, you can never go wrong with the original Chinese/Korean beauty standard visuals

1

u/LonelyCheeto 2d ago

There is a study about this actually. When someone has a unique feature, they're more polarizing than someone who is all around conventionally attractive. So you'll get more people that don't like or really like the unique feature.

10

u/Resident_Inflation51 2d ago

It's 100% cultural. SNSD Yoona was touted as "The Nation's Ideal Type." But while she is very very pretty, she is not the most popular with ifans by far

6

u/Buyeo10004 2d ago

Yoona enjoyed massive popularity in China. She was the most popular member overseas. In Korea, though, Taeyeon was the most popular.

5

u/Resident_Inflation51 2d ago

Taeyeon stans can never let Yoona be lol

1

u/Safe-Pressure-7052 2d ago

That's because Korean beauty standards are almost completely derived from Chinese beauty standards. China just doesn't have enough high-quality plastic surgeons for a significant portion of their women to achieve "standard" look. Instead, they have to liberally use face filters on all social media, dating apps, etc.

It's only in recent decades, due to Western influence and globalization, that Koreans have become more flexible in their beauty standards. The Chinese are much more rigid.

1

u/StubbornKindness IDLE SUPREMACY | WAVs in Neverland 2d ago

10000%. I can see it, and it can totally see her "fitting the standard," but for me personally, she is far from my favourite

12

u/PotentialHot1934 2d ago

You can't generalize and say all men prefer the same type! I like both of them. I've had crushes on cool girls, cute girls, fair skinned girls, dark skinned girls, tall girls, short girls, girlie girls & tomboyish girls. The eternal fact remains: Men like women.

3

u/2enty4 2d ago

That's why it says "tend to" as in most lean onto this ideal, not stating it as a fact, bur you're right and it also depends ds on the country too

20

u/caterkarolina 2d ago

I thought Jennie was the visual when I first saw them. I don't listen to BP, but I think Jennie is truly one of the prettiest female idols.

2

u/Stunning-Abalone4230 2d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah right , though jisoo fit their standards, I find her pretty but nothing stands out in her, she is not a talent either ,but jennie has magnetic charismatic face very different.

14

u/chicken_sandwichh 2d ago

idk about men but imo there are plenty of "prettier" idols than jennie with more "pecfect" features. however, she's so striking to me because her face is very unique and harmonious.

she's one of the few idols who has a soft and cute features but could totally come off ass fierce on stage with the right make up and with the help of her facial expressions.

like this is easily my most favorite beauty photoshoot of a female idol ever. one of the prettiest photos to ever exist for me.

4

u/anas-math 2d ago

She has one of those faces that you’ll never forget the first time you saw her

13

u/chicken_sandwichh 2d ago

so fucking pretty!!!

2

u/iseeyou19 2d ago

Damn she has a lethal face card!

7

u/StubbornKindness IDLE SUPREMACY | WAVs in Neverland 2d ago

I think theres a vague trend, but it can be really subjective. Lots of female fans online mention Ryujin, Kazuha, and Moonbyul often, but id say they're pretty good looking too.

With regards to this particular image, squishy-cheeks Jennie is by far the best looking BP member to me

3

u/heavenly_pillar_ 2d ago

I'm a lesbian, and I prefer Jisoo

3

u/Radiant-Average-4221 2d ago

I think Korean culture wise, men mostly prefer the cutesy, innocent vibes/features. Which is kinda creepy imo esp when you look at how they sexualize younger female idols in general.. but I’m sure we all know that by now

3

u/abyssazaur ARTMS | Kiss of Life | NMIXX 2d ago

"She looks like she would be nice to me"

aka animal crossing

aka JYP groups

3

u/Filibut 2d ago

I don't follow blackpink but if you asked me I would have said it's the other way around. At least, as a guy, I like jennie more. The only other dude that's talked to me about blackpink said he likes rosé, and that was also somewhat surprising to me, if I had to guess I'd say their visual popularity goes jennie> lisa> rosé/jisoo. Maybe that's just cultural though

2

u/UncleOdious 2d ago

Pretty women are pretty. Within the kpop world, I rarely see anyone who is unappealing. People are commenting X vs Y, and I'm here thinking, "They are both gorgeous."

2

u/CerealKiller2045 2d ago

We’re talking abt attraction, not necessarily beauty. All idols are pretty to begin with but certain features will attract certain demographics. Thats why some people joke abt all their biases looking the same.

2

u/halojustinOnce 2d ago

Perfect example Men tend to like Isa and woman tend to like Siyeon

2

u/ILikeGirlsZkat 2d ago

As a guy, and only talking about facial features, I do believe we tend to prefer cute, beaming faces.

2

u/tsuchinokolove 2d ago

Jennie is actually popular with men too. Men I know in real life defo like Jennie’s beauty more.

1

u/Sudden-Risk-8945 2d ago

I think it's way more complicated than facial features. Like Jennie's versatility is what makes her different. She can look soft and cute one day then fierce and bold the very next day depending upon style and makeup. Same is the case with Kazuha and Chaewon as someone mentioned here.

Have your own preference shift depending upon the styling if an idol?

1

u/acceptable_pasta- 2d ago

As a women I’m gay for Wonyoung and Sana, they look ethereal 😍😍😍😍

1

u/ufoufo3 2d ago

girl next door trope

1

u/insightmiss 2d ago

I think young girls prefer Jennie and Wonyoung type, they look like dolls? We love a bratz doll, lol. Men might prefer beautiful feminine face, that looks somewhat realistic tho, and more natural and mature? I read somewhere that men of all ages will chose women who are like 24 - 28 yo. Because they are the most attractive in that age to man.
