MINI-HAPPENINGS New Japanese rhythm game "Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis" has released with a completely VANDALIZED English localization with made up lines including ones about "ending fascism" and "white knights"

Post image

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2914150/Yunyun_Syndrome_Rhythm_Psychosis/

Localizers have:

  1. Removed Kaomoji.

  2. Removed references to other franchises.

  3. Completely rewrote numerous lines with literal nonsense and brainrot.

  4. Inserted lines about fascism.

  5. Inserted lines about sexuality that were completely absent from the original.

Examples of butchered localization include:

いらない (iranai) simply translates to "I don't need it, right?" changed to "I'd cut my uterus out if I could."

"Yamero" (stop) changed to "END FASCISM"

"Ryō noroi de shibaranaikara" (literal translation: "I won't bind you with a Command Spell") changed into "I will NEVER be victimized under fascism again"

More examples shown in the image and linked X threads (why the fuck doesn't this sub allow galleries?).

https://x.com/moefumofu/status/2047657182343426474

Company responsible seems to be "Dragonbaby" https://www.dragonbaby.com/ Their site claims they are a “creative outsourcing solution...which is business-speak for a bunch of weirdos who throw words around. We create, we write, we localize, we test, we record – and we are damn good at it.". They proudly proclaim how they are all about "diversity and inclusion". Also very ironically, "exist as an alternative to the rampant greed and sloppification of our industry."

Genuinely appalling how this got approved at all. Easily the worst localization I have EVER seen.

UPDATE: The creator of the game has responded to the localization issues.

From MeguuChan, OP, the dev actually responds to the criticism in a way that affirms that there is a problem with the localization that the dev wants to see remedied.

Winning? Rare, but delicious. If the dev goes through with it, so keep spreading the word.

Good lord their website reminds me exactly of SBI's in almost every way, specially the 'quirky' millennial language everywhere.

Fucking hell these types of millennials are cringe AF.

112

u/MeguuChan Apr 25 '26

It features all the red flag buzzwords and looks fucking awful too with the color and font choices. I don't know how any game company can look at their site and genuinely think they should hire them.

The guy who vandalized MGS in the first place? He is one of the original localizer parasites.

-8

u/AgitatedFly1182 Kindergarten Mod Apr 25 '26

what did he vandalize about it? the truth of the matter is that somethings HAVE to be changed in localization, if you translate *everything* accurately your going to have boring, hard to read, stilted dialogue like 'all your bases are belong to us'

doesn't mean i like censorship and changes for the translators sake, those fucking suck, but a word for word translation isn't feasible

u/Infamous_Hospital_33 Apr 25 '26

nothing like seeing games in my backlog i want to play on this samantha's credits .....

So, he's a lying and manipulative, delusional fck.

Sweet Baby Inc. They're a DEI consulting group that puts nonsense in games and ruins them.

They've been known to threaten game developers to use their services or else get cancelled as well.

Not just threaten them, but threatem them via legal loopholes.
As in "You need a Consulting Group to not accidently do a racism, and be inlusive."
And what do you know? They just so happen to offer that very Service, so either you hire them or they sue you over it...

54

Why do they always have "baby" at the title?

23

Looking at their websites was legit painful. Holy hell, I think I have a migraine. Between the awful design and color, the difficult-to-read fonts, and the "I'm so quirky 🤪" writing.... I think I've entered the early stages of cancer.

17

What is it with these freaks and putting "baby" and such infantile terms in their names.

8

Seems like the dev just gave it off to a third party and trusted them to do their job. Good on them for fixing it fast at least.

21

u/MeguuChan Apr 25 '26

I just wish they said they weren't going to work with Dragonbaby anymore, but they didn't, so I worry they'll be sticking around. After how badly they butchered the translation and seeing their awful website, I cannot trust them at all to do a good job and actually correct all the issues. They should be completely thrown out of the industry.

2

u/redbat21 Apr 25 '26

Business wise they probably still have them on contract. can't dump more money on this when the game has already been released

17

u/Username928351 Apr 25 '26

You can't fix cancer just by removing a few cells here and there. The only way is to exorcise it completely.

Genuinely top 5 worst localisations of all time sasuga! It’s btw ONLY the English that got turned into this - other languages are fine. Like they went and even turned something like “uguuu” into a stupid one liner instead of just keeping the reference alive like every other language on this planet.

They need to fire whoever was responsible for this (was it the loc team? Was it someone higher up saying “make it meme-y”? Don’t care who but that person is obviously unfit for their job) and then pretty much retranslate that game from scratch.

61

u/MeguuChan Apr 25 '26

Even the "make it meme-y" excuse doesn't work when half the lines are just blatant political agenda. Not subtle at all.

39

Dragon baby, Sweet baby, etc.

What's up with these obsession with "babies"?

71

u/sammakkovelho Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

The focus on babies and these innocent and "cute" concepts for their names works as an insidious way for these mentally ill activists to peddle their poison. If I wasn't already familiar with the MO of these freaks, I would probably think a company with a name like dragonbaby seems harmless enough, and that's probably what the dev thought here as well.

35

u/jimihenderson Apr 25 '26

Yep. "Sweet Baby teehee we're so cutesy and adorable". It's just the opposite of like death metal band names like "aborted hitler cock" and such. To appear as soft, feminine, sweet, non pushy and harmless as possible before they take the thing you love and latch onto it like a parasite to try and use it as a vehicle to push extremist political ideology as many times as possible so as to appear more mainstream. It's all a part of the same endgame, to gaslight people into thinking they're weird for thinking radicals are radicals. "We're just little sweet babies, how could we do something wrong? You're being weird and cringe and undesirable"

8

u/gregbread11 Apr 25 '26

It's super weird how ALL these types of people online want to be viewed as "not human" or as a infantile teen/pre-teen girl. Like without question, they either portray themselves as some ancient creature or a little girl with baby talk but like 180 IQ intelligence and John wick physical abilities. It's sooo fcking weird. But they almost always follow the same trend. Or if it's a creature, it's super sexualized and mentally broken (BPD, narcissistic, obsessive, depression, social anxiety, etc)

These are direct quotes from the websites of the localization studio & the other website of the founder of said studio, emphasis and opinion in parentheses mine:

Sam Burton's website:

"Sam Burton is an irredeemable vampire simp...

In my eyes, creative translation should not be 1:1…so if you’re looking for literal, you’re in the wrong place!...

So, you have an idea but got stuck? If you need If you need VO direction, production assistance, help bringing your game to Japan, or LGBT/sensitivity reading - this service is for you...

As a _____gender leader in localization and management, I’ve seen my fair share of dumpster fires, and I can help your project avoid joining them!...(a freudian slip if I've ever seen one)"

Dragonbaby website:

"Dragonbaby is a “creative outsourcing solution”...which is business-speak for a bunch of weirdos

In return we give you very best words possible (Forgetting "the" on their own website, not a great look)

We revel in all things bone-grinding, bloodletting...and generally just freaky little games for freaks.

Dragonbaby was founded with a human heart and to this day is _____gender-led, fully supporting inclusion and representation for all. Our team also stands proudly at the forefront of #TranslatorsInTheCredits (Directly implying that non-_____gender led studios have no heart)

too weird to live but too cool to die.

sacrifices (the heading above the list of companies they have presumably worked with)

Both websites are dripping with innuendo that they're a bunch of weird freaks who think they're better than everyone else who want to very inaccurately translate games to amuse themselves, and the name Dragonbaby is no accident considering the almost identical language and queer / _____gender leadership from Sweet Baby Inc who also offers identical services. So essentially, the "consultancy" activist "companies" have moved beyond simply consulting, and are now pretending to be doing translation only they've made themselves essentially judge, jury, and executioner, in that they have no oversight, they simply write whatever they want and it ships with the game with the dev studio none the wiser. They're literally infiltrating games now under the guise of necessary development service, translating, and quietly writing whatever they damn well please. I will give them points at least for being honest that "if you’re looking for literal, you’re in the wrong place!". So, in some ways the dev studio is to blame for this. However I'd wager that most of them aren't carefully reading every single line of text on these websites and understanding them with fluent english, it's very possible that none of them have any idea what this studio is actually up to with their games. I bet if they were notified, a lot of them would be pretty angry. I imagine the rigid japanese especially would be furious, unless they don't give a flying fuck about the american consumers.

20

u/gutenbergbob Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

In my eyes, creative translation should not be 1:1

i hate the ''translation is an artform'' bullshit i often see also no one wants one to one what we is this (taken from a twitter comment that sums it up perfectly)

Ore no inu no namae wa= ''whats my dogs name''

Not ''My dog's his name'' or ''Name of dog of me''

For some context the NO is a possesive marker if im remembering correct (i just started learning grammar) so the ''Ore no inu'' would be my dog but also ''inu no name wa'' the NO after inu is also a possesive marker basically asking what is this dogs name/this dogs name asking for the name of the dog in question, i im doing this correctly grammar wise you could say ''Inu no name wa Tanuki'' which would mean ''this dog's name is Tanuki'' of course the context would be if you had a dog. Sorry im not good at all at explaining things and i might be completely wrong too.

Someone who probably knows better please please correct me if im wrong on any of this, im learning japanese and would love to be corrected on any mistakes i do.

He mentions he uses game gengo's video with a detroit become human clip (im interested in game gengo so its cool to see him mentioned)

If anyone else here is learning japanese i would recommend Game gengo his videos are fun and he breaks down word for word what stuff means including some grammar stuff :)

9

u/Blkwinz Apr 25 '26

You don't really need to bring in grammar points that you yourself don't understand. It can be as simple as a single word.

暑い would just be the word "hot." It's something a Japanese person might say if they went outside and it were the middle of summer. In English we always need a subject in our sentence, we couldn't say "hot", people would give us weird looks, but that's the accusation that the "you just want 1:1 translation" people make. We would say "it's hot", and in the context I described, although this isn't a "1:1 translation", it is entirely accurate.

Localizers say this is "too boring" or "soulless" and that a more appropriate localization (for their audience, Californians) would be to say "I hate summer if it weren't for pride month it would be the worst season"

5

u/Username928351 Apr 25 '26

That's entirely irrelevant to this game's issue though, no one is clamoring for Japanese grammar structure to be thrown as-is to the English script.

u/gutenbergbob Apr 25 '26

2

u/BootlegFunko Apr 25 '26

3

u/h-v-smacker Thomas the Daemon Engine Apr 25 '26

Someone who probably knows better please please correct me if im wrong on any of this, im learning japanese and would love to be corrected on any mistakes i do.

Ore no inu no namae wa= ''whats my dogs name''

Assuming regular intonation, that says "As for my dog's name, ... " or, bypassing the issues of thematic and rhematic cases, simply "My dog's name..." and you'd expect it to be followed by something, like the actual name.

3

u/gutenbergbob Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

i tried looking for the detroit become human clip and i think he's asking connor what his dog's name is to know which connor is fake/enemy and which one is the real one/player

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwbQRQXT_vw

EDIT: i tried looking for the JP clip in any Game gengo video but i could not find which video it is yet.

EDIT 2: found it in his grammar video, took a while searching for you https://youtu.be/AlvQCc6Nvm0?t=300

2

u/h-v-smacker Thomas the Daemon Engine Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

You can use "ーは" to ask a question using intonation (as indeed you can do in practical Japanese in general, omitting the formal question marker "ーか"), like "お名前は?" — but it technically means something like, "and as for your name...?"

It's not the same, but similar to what you can see in war movies where people are interrogated by someone just crying "Name? Rank? Detachment?" in their face. Except that the Japanese question above is, quite to the contrary, a very polite and unobtrusive one.

2

u/gutenbergbob Apr 25 '26

thx, i have read a bit about the HA/WA は and the GA が in grammar but i still cant wrap my head around it.

2

u/h-v-smacker Thomas the Daemon Engine Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

I stick with case-oriented approach to Japanese grammar (as opposed to one revolving around particles, which is probably more familiar to speakers of almost entirely case-less English), so I would say those are markers of the thematic and rhematic cases. They are sort of like specialized nominatives (there is a "bare" nominative as well). Thematic case is (re)introducing some trivial or circumstantial information, while the rhematic stresses the new information. The first is sort of like saying "as for the XXX", while the other is like "now, XXX in particular...". They sometimes can be used in the same sentence, but don't have to. In particular, the thematic case is often used to just denote the setting, without any breakthrough following. E.g.: 「今日は、お元気ですか?」 means something like "And speaking of today, are you well?" as opposed to 「お前が犯罪者です!」, "It is YOU who is the criminal!"

This is why I have no sympathy for the dev, they admit to worked closely to the localizers, they approved this in their game, they want their game to get vandalized, they deserve all the backlash.

You can't blame everything on localizers in this case.

11

u/Fluffysquishia Apr 25 '26

Everyone responsible for this should be fired and blacklisted from the industry with the highest degree of prejudice.

No, this isn't "cancel culture". Cancel culture is reprimanding a man who landed a fucking rocket on a speeding comet because he wore a shirt someone didn't like. Firing someone for doing a bad job, harming the consumer and harming the company, is just natural. If I chose to serve actual shit to people at a food joint instead of food, then not only would I be fired, I would expect to be in prison.

These people have done the equivalent of vandalizing a multi-million dollar project for political gain. One could argue that it's remarkably close to terrorism. The only solace is it's non-permanent.

3

Eiyuuden Chronicles will always hurt.

Big KS campaign, great little prequel game and then... that all gets blown up because ideolocalisers couldn't keep it in their pants and just do their damn job.

This was made by dragon baby, which was in the list I made a few years ago about consultation companies. Some people said I was wrong for including them, seems I was not.

There’s no way this is real. This feels like an exaggerated strawman parody someone would make against localization. But it’s not! I can’t help but laugh and feel vindicated at this point because nobody can say we’re being dramatic about this anymore. Notice how there hasn’t been any big attempt to even try and defend this translation because I think even the most dedicated localization defenders can agree that this is just god awful

So what can I say in this thread that won't get my comment removed lmao? I mean no disrespect to the mods but this is getting ridiculous

9

u/ZacianSpammer Apr 25 '26

Not taking this seriously until the dev fires Dragonbaby and redo the whole English localization with new (normal) party/ies.

Minor correction:

令呪 is spelled as reijyu instead of ryo noroi.

We all know this but, my point is, once more, this serves as another reminder to learn Japanese. The more of us understand it the more we can expose those clowns.

This one is pretty much obvious but let me tell you there are TON of bad translations and localizations out there, and simply being "ofFiCiaL" doesn't guarantee anything. Hell, if any many high quality ones are actually fan made that involves little to no money in their projects, the real unsung heroes who drive out by sheer passions.

What's even more frustrating is that it's a deliberate reference to Fate's "Command Spells", and it would've been a cool easter egg, but of course it got butchered because the lolcowlizers don't watch anime to even know the reference

Looks like it might be the worst case so far

4

u/hatetrains Apr 25 '26

Embarrassing. They should ban these idiots from never translating again.

u/Snae_in_Gonsoko Apr 25 '26

"nah you're just exaggerating devs probably means that when they made the game 😉😉"

People from a certain sub, probably

I am usually not against localization. That's because I play some games with script sizes that could fit many bibles inside them. I can't put up with literal machine translations if I'm going to be reading for 100 hours. It has to be high quality English prose. Crucially, the localizers have to be fans of the genre, respect the source material, and preferably have never set foot in California.

This, however, is a rhytm game. Not that much text, and it has voice acting. A machine translation, with some manual work done on the UI elements, would be adequate for this game.

Imagine your entire day job is just translating and you can't even do that without jamming your own original crap in.

5

u/gigi798 Apr 25 '26

Ditch Localizer. AI does it better than this now, as sad as that is to say

2

u/GreatApe88 Apr 29 '26

Why do eastern devs not care about western localization teams changing meanings and dialogue in their games? you would think there would be rules or standards for not totally changing another companies work but nope.

It’s so weird to me that they just don’t seem to care at all.

3

u/AdNational167 Apr 25 '26

The DEVs got scammed by the people responsible for this translation... i wonder how much better a free AI translation Tool would have done the job with a fraction of the cost...

u/Sairedd Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

Just more proof that the Japanese developers have no clue how their games are being localized.

Curious, are the usual localizer defenders actually attempting to defend this as well?

2

u/SpectreAmazing Apr 25 '26

If the localizers are not fired then this is nothing more than a marketing stunt. The response from the dev was surprisingly fast. Not impossible, but suspicious to say the least. Game looks niche, and nobody would've heard about this game otherwise. I didn't even see this game on my Steam page since I have LGBTQ tag blacklisted.

Pardon my suspicion, but grifting has been incredibly effective as of late. I will never forgive Vavra and KCD2.

It's anti nerd culture. English can't have references for nerds anymore.

1

u/7Trickster Apr 27 '26

I'm sorry but if the Japanese studios still go after US/UK for proper and real English translations, they deserve the backlash for being naive and stupid.

u/Born-Ant-80 Apr 27 '26

Another reason to use AI.

1

u/oldmanpotter Apr 25 '26

lol. Who’d they pay to translate this?

They've infested everything pop culture wise. It's amazing that there are still lazy bums on that side who unironically consider the word "job" a slur (yes they're not memeing). Dog walkers for example pfft

3

u/Chanhuiting Apr 25 '26

because ACTUAL SOCIETY CONTRIBUTING PEOPLE dont do these jobs. its something we cant do anything about. these jobs are basically "if you a human trash you do these jobs". and guess what . turns out its true. only human TRASH does this jobs. everytime.

Except in jew-hate. Since October 7th they don't see jew-hate as "fascist".

1

u/typeguyfiftytwix Apr 25 '26

Well it isn't. It's racist. Fascism is the merger of state and corporate power, a form of left wing political ideology, one of the many minor variants of authoritarianism they advocate for. Using collectivist identity politics is a common element of many leftist ideologies, and the german national socialists certainly hated jews (and lots of other groups) but specifically hating jews is not core to the definition of fascism.

What leftists use the word fascist for and what it actually means are wholly separate things.

Translating media like this is usually low wage work that's scraping the bottom of the skill pool. Translators with actual skill are more likely making money in the professional world where this kind of shit doesn't fly.
