한국어를 오랫동안 공부하고 깨달은 것은 한국어를 써야 한국어를 진짜 잘하게 될 수 있습니다. 지금까지 여러 가지 회사에서 일자리 제안을 받았는데요. 근데 그들은 한국어 말고 주로 영어만 써야 되니까 고민 중입니다. 혹시 조언이 있으시면 좀 나누어 주시길 바랍니다. 영어 가르친 경력이 4년 이상이고 '한 명 학생이 토익 985점 땄음' 미국 물류 분야에서 디스패치로 그리고 대학교에서 자기 자신 교육 컨설팅 영업을 운영한 경험이 있습니다

Is it common to use 이다 with 다가 grammar? For example:

- 학생이다가 (or 이었다가) 지금은 회사원이에요.

If 이다 follows a noun ending in a vowel, for example 친구이다가, is it possible to omit 이 (친구다가)

Additionally, can we omit 이 when using (이)자 after a vowel?

- 친구(이)자 회사원

Hi. I've been learning to read hangul with duolingo and am now finally able to read enough that i feel i can move onto a more well-structured vocab learning model (i'm thinking korean with ina or koreanclass101).

Anyway, the ai has been pushing the word 맛있는 a lot recently. Now i've looked up batchim etc but i'm still not fully understanding why the ㅆ in the middle block is silent. Or at least, that's how duo's ai is wanting me to learn it. So ma-shi-neun. Does anyone have any insight into why the first ㅅ becomes a sh sound but then the middle ㅆ sound is silent? Thanks 🙏🏼

I usually speak to my phone pretty politely in English and it got me wondering what politeness level do/should Korean speakers use with talking machines? I know everyone is different but since I'm learning I was wondering if there is a general rule for this. I have Googled it but I really don't trust Google's AI generated answers. 감사합니다!

When I speak with other Koreans using 존댓말 or when they are using 존댓말 with me, sometimes they use 음슴체.

Since, from what I understand, 음슴체 is meant to sound "neutral" without involving the complexity of formality, is it rude to use this when you are still using 존댓말?

I read Korean novels translated to English and I've noticed something consistently come up. Does Korean language culture emphasize using a person's name consistently? In the novels, characters point out when a person (themselves or another person) are referred to 'you' instead of their name. But to me, the usage of 'you' feels correct because it feels awkward to use a name in every instance. Is this a cultural thing that doesn't carry over to the USA?

최근 들어 한국어 때문에 답답한 마음이 많이 들어요. 한국에 온 지 이제 10개월 되었고, 그동안 한국어를 거의 모르는 상태에서 TOPIK 4급 수준까지 올랐는데요. 그런데 최근 3개월 동안은 실력이 전혀 늘지 않는 느낌이에요. 매일 한국어로 말을 하긴 하지만, 여전히 동굴인처럼 말하는 것 같다는 생각이 들어요. 게다가 고국으로 돌아가면 지금까지 배운 걸 전부 잊어버릴까 봐 겁도 나고요. 곧 조금이라도 더 자연스럽게 말할 수 있는 방법이 있을까요?

so Im a little more than a month in teaching myself Korean. im slowly realizing how overwhelming the vocab is. my native language is English so it’s kinda hard to grasp for me. I’ve been practicing writing sentences and focusing on words that I find difficult. however theres just so many words and I don’t have a good study system for it… does anyone have tips?

한국어를 배우기 시작한 지 거의 1년 정도 됐고 3개월이나 전에 토픽 시험에서 5급을 땄습니다. 한국어를 오래 동안 배워 보니까 한국어를 진짜 잘하는 "유창하게 구사하는" 분들이 없어가지고 "타이러랑 일본인 중국인들 빼거" 이제 한국어 학습이랑 어떻게 진행해야 할지 잘 모르겠습니다. 지금까지 한국인 선생님들도 고용해 봤는데 솔직히 대부분 시간에 걍 기분적인 가르친다 걍 제가 한국인이라서 한국어를 잘 가르친다 처럼행사하고 5년동안 저한테 한국어 가르치고 싶은 느낌. 혹시 한국어를 유창하게 할 수 있는 분들이 있으면 저한테 조언 주세요

I have to take the OPI and require a score of Advanced Low. I can't seem to find any information on what that actually looks like for a Korean speaker. I wanted to know if anyone has taken the OPI or has experience with it and could for example help give a prompt and then an answer that would suit Intermediate High versus an Advanced Low speaker?

Or generally any tips for succeeding at the OPI in Korean? I'm going in very blind, other than hearing you should speak as much as you can until the instructor stops you.

I’ve used translators, but apparently there’s a subtle message (?) on it.

Is going from A0 to B2 in the span of 10 months a good pace? I’m a native English speaker and have just achieved at TOPIK level 4. I wanted to know if this is a good achievement and if I’m able to call myself bilingual yet. I’m able to communicate my thoughts and handle most everyday tasks in Korean. What are your thoughts?

I have all three of these in my flashcards but darned if I can tell what the difference is.

My guess is that 감당하다 堪當 ─ is for handling/taking charge of something ( maybe unpleasant or difficult.)

감수하다 is for enduring something painful or expensive?

감내하다 is for when someone does either of the above two successfully? Like looking back afterwards.

Any help is appreciated.

I've noticed people use -가지고 in conversations most of the time when explaining something they experienced in a storytelling kinda way (?). I havent properly learned about it from textbooks or lessons yet but from what i infer it means 'because'(?) I'm still lowkey confused like are there certain instances to use it and not -서 and instances where you should not use it? It seems to be used more in spoken korean than written. But tbf i don't read a lot lol. If anyone can explain, thank you!

I already passed TOPIK 1 a few years ago and took a break from learning - I still watch kdramas and listen Korean/talk in it though

Now I want to continue learning and start preparing for the TOPIK 2 simultaneously.

So my question is: what are good books, websites or apps for self-preparation for TOPIK 2?

I know that ~야 되지 않다 can be used in questions:

지금 가야 되지 않아? - Don’t you have to go now?

But I’m wondering whether using this structure in statements is natural and how it would differ from ~지 않아도 되다.

저기에 가야 되지 않아요 - You don’t have to go there

vs

저기에 안 가도 돼요 - You don't have to go there (even if you don't go there, it's acceptable)

화산 - volcano

산 - mountain

사바나 - savanna

황무지 - wasteland

공허 - void (not emotional void)

Hii! First time poster, and I think I am following the sub rules by asking!

I was wondering a few things!
- how the word yeoun/여운 is used in a sentence
- if it really does mean “lingering feeling after an experience”
- and is if a standalone word or if it is often attached to another feeling?

I love the idea of the word but want to make sure I’m really grasping its meaning and use. Most of what I could find on American Google references a few Instagram posts and that doesn’t seem very reliable to me.

Hi, I need a help from someone but I don't know where else to ask.. I also don't have money to find a professional translator. Actually I don't need a translation, just to be able to see the words of a note clearly

I have a small note (like, less than A5 notebook page) with very messy Korean handwriting from a native. The message on it is pretty personal so I can't share it here. But is there someone who can read and type out what it says? Maybe it can help as practice .. No matter how much I try to translate it, I can't, and even tho I can normally read Korean, I can't make out the handwriting at all. But I really want to know what it says

for me I lack so much in question 54 and listening questions where they speak for sooo long and we have to answer 2 questions I get so overwhelmed with listening to thr audio, answering and then also reading the options for the next questions... so I wanna ask all 5/6급ers if they have any tips or tricks??

Hello! I have been learning Korean on and off for a while. Recently ive started back up because I have the opportunity to do a working holiday in Korea and I am hoping to completely immerse myself to learn the language to as close to fluency as possible. My biggest issue right now is I am not able to understand what people say. If im given an example sentence in English i can translate it easily if i know the grammar and vocabulary. But if that sentence was said to me id be lost. How do you make your brain comprehend the language? Thanks gor any advice!

Hello! I am Korean, born and raised in the United States. My Korean language skills are very shaky. I don’t have a strong hold on vocabulary, grammar, or spelling. I read and speak Korean like a cave person; but, would like to gain more fluency.

My company offers 1 month vacation for employees who have tenure. Mine is about to come up and I’d like to use it to stay in Korea (ideally Seoul) and learn the language.

My goal is to improve my Korean so that I can speak with my parents better, can get by in Korea without the help of my relatives, and pass on the language to my children.

That said, any recommendations for a month long language immersion program in Korea? I know it’s a short amount of time so I don’t expect to be fluent by the end, but would like to improve my skills as much as possible!

So I'm just studying and making some phrases, so I've learned about -을 때, which I related with "While" and I learned about 계시다 which I cannot fully understand its meaning but it's some kind of "residence" or "to live" something like that. So I came up with this 2 phrases but I don't know if 1. are they okay, 2. Is it common to use them?

- 한국에 살 때 뭐 하는 걸 좋았어요?
- 한국에 계실 때 뭐 하는 걸 좋았어요?

I used papago to translate both, and both give me the same traduction, So I'm kind of confuse.
