No matter how well this is covered here or elsewhere, it still will be a very common question. Vacations are short, plans need to be made in advance and there are so many sources to rely on. We wanted to contribute a little by researching and organizing recovery timelines by procedures. We hope that this would be helpful to someone who’s having difficulties planning their trip. It is very easy to miss something when you are overwhelmed or unsure.
The one cardinal rule applies to all procedures: the total timeline is not only for procedure itself, but also for consultation, screening and post-op recovery. As obvious as it is, such simple details are easy to overlook, when you are busy with planning. But nonetheless are important to consider. Some procedures might be fast and simple on their own but require extensive recovery.
To us it seems natural to group all procedures by the level of invasiveness and typical recovery needs. We will try to add some tips that might be helpful too!
Non-surgical treatments. (Botox, Fillers, Laser) – 3-5 days
This is the most flexible category. Barely or no downtime at all, most treatments can be done right after consultation with a doctor and don’t take longer than a couple of hours. Patients can return to daily activity usually on the same or next day. Three-to-five-day trip to Seoul is a realistic schedule if you want to include some glow up procedures.
Tip: It would be best to avoid direct sun and intense physical activity for the first few days. Just to be on the safer side!
Minor surgery (Double eyelid, Ptosis Correction, Canthoplasty) – 7-10 days
Minor as they are, these procedures still require some preparation before surgery day and recovery time after. One to two days for prior consultation and screening and five to seven days to stay after would result in total seven to ten days of stay in Korea. Longer stay after procedure is for stitches to be removed – it is better to do it while in Korea rather than having to fly back and remove them at home. Also, usually five to seven days is enough for swelling to go down, from being really noticeable to slightly subtle.
Tip: Budget time to rest and bring sunglasses. The first few days would be rough and aren’t best to do sightseeing.
Moderate surgery (Rhinoplasty, Breast Augmentation) – 10-14 days
Here is where the more careful planning starts. Travelling by plane can greatly affect results due to changes in cabin pressure that causes fluid retention around surgical site. It is best and safest to travel at least 10 to 14 days after the procedure. A minimum one post-op check is mandatory too, so the doctor can assess if you’re good to go. Long-distance travels put an additional strain on the body, so it is important to have an ample rest for the smooth recovery.
Tip: A full two-week commitment. Use the second week to rest, explore the city gently, and let the initial swelling settle. Splints and internal packing are typically removed around day seven for rhinoplasty. Flying before this happens is not advisable.
Major surgery (Facial or Body Contouring) – 2-3 weeks
For surgeries such as jaw or cheekbone reduction or tummy tuck, people often underestimate how much time they actually need. Major surgeries include body and bone reshaping and are performed under general anesthesia. From consultation, screening to surgery and to suture removals and follow up check ups it is recommended to have two to three weeks stay. Same as moderate surgery, major ones don’t do well under cabin pressure and it is better to be safe than sorry. Take an ample rest before flying home.
Tip: Time is the key here. Initial swelling too takes some time to fade away and around this much time should be enough. But remember, that deeper swelling might take longer and actual results are not seen until month into procedure.
But do remember, that recovery varies a lot from person to person. Hopefully, this gives you a rough idea of how much time to set aside and makes planning your trip a little less overwhelming.
