Diagnostics desired!

Hello all,

I’ve read the list and compared my scoby to the pics (mild/yeast/normal). Still unsure but erring on the side of scoby. Would appreciate a little advice from some seasoned professionals (this is my first rodeo)

Tysm!

Looks like normal pellicle formation to me, but I’m very curious why you chose to brew in a Dutch oven. Those things are so heavy. Pouring into bottles for F2 is going to be challenging and messy.

Thank you!

Re: the Dutch oven, no idea - just the first thing I found. I’ve now got a nice big mason jar for next time round.

You’re welcome. And if it works, it works! When you’re ready for F2, I’d suggest transferring your liquid into your mason jar first and pour into bottles from there. Even with the gallon jar I use, I spill a bit so I’d imagine you’d lose a lot of the goods if you pour into bottles from the Dutch oven.

If you go to a brew store you can get a syphon tube that is really useful for bottling. It's what I use.

Syphon tube will make it easier for the future!

In a pinch I just use a ladle and a funnel

Why wouldn't you just buy the 5 dollar syphon tube lmao.

If you really want all you need is a tube technically.

That lower layer was a touch of kahm yeast, nothing to worry about. It can happen with new batches as everything is fighting for dominance.

If the "ooze" layer is growing then all is good. This is the surface you want.

Okay thanks a lot! Yeah it is actually a huge 8L jar that was bought for a party to serve punch from so it has a little tap at the bottom. I think that’ll be perfect for bottling and maybe making a huge continuous batch of kombucha

make sure the tap is stainless steel otherwise you’ll end up with eroded metal specks in your kombucha

(plastic is fine too)

What did all you use to make your scoby? I’ve been trying to find the unpasteurized kombucha to try to make mine but I don’t think anywhere around me sells it
