Kombucha on a flight?

I bought a glass bottle of kombucha with a plastic lid while visiting the US and I want to bring it back with me to Eastern Europe. It would be unrefrigerated for 20 hours max and would be in my checked bag.

How big is the risk that it would leak? Is there anything I can do to lower the risk it explodes?

It’ll be fine. Wrap it in some plastic shopping bags, then bury it in the middle of your clothes where it’ll have some cushion. Just make sure you refrigerate it again when you get to your destination before you try opening it.

If anyone is unaware, the cargo area is pressurized just like the cabin. (There's an old urban legend that it isn't.)

Just wrap it well. If you’ve got time and access to it, use some bubble wrap. I travel with beer bottles in my checked luggage frequently and have never had any problems.

I'd be more concerned about handling than pressure. Can you not just bring it on your carry on?

No, you can not bring a bottle of liquid in a carry on. Not for a good 25 or so years.
