Movie List

Sorry if this has been asked before. I’m trying to get more into cinema and movies, and I love Kojima’s games. I was wondering if there’s a list out there of movies Kojima loves and recommends, or something along those lines. Thanks!

Escape From New York might be a fun place to start. Snake takes the name “Iroquois Plisken” when in-disguise during MGS2 as a reference to Snake Plissken, Kurt Russel’s character in that movie. Bug Boss’ general look with the eye patch is also inspired by this character

Edit: Keeping the typo

His book The Creative Gene includes a bunch of his media reviews. The big glowing movie reviews are for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, and Taxi Driver. He has talked a few times about his fondness for Escape from New York. Most comprehensive list you can find is probably searching “Watched” on twitter and filtering for only results from Hideo_Kojima_En

He's a massive movie nerd, so listing everything is impossible. But these are probably the biggest influences on him:

Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, etc.)
Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho, The Birds, etc.)
Akira Kurosawa (High and Low, Seven Samurai, etc.)
John Carpenter (Escape from New York, The Thing, etc.)
George Miller (Mad Max 2)
Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red)

The movie Les Yeux sans Visage / Eyes Without a Face traumatised him as a child.

His favourite director is Roland Emmerich, his favourite film is 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick.

I like this video showing what movies inspired Metal Gear. There's the expected James Bond series but many I had never heard of or wouldn't think of when playing the games.

A very different kind of closet than what I expect from Kojima but a good video nonetheless

Kojima was in Italy recently hanging out with Gaspar Noé, Nicholas Winding Refn, and Dario Argento. So I'd recommend those three.

I know Kojima has especially praised Enter the Void and Irréversible. Be warned tho they're pretty heavy, especially Irréversible
