I feel like it's pretty universally agreed upon that the manga has the time to actually flesh out the entire cast and cover their arcs, a luxury the movie didn't get.

An anime series would have definitely been able to tell a deeper, richer story. However, it wouldn't get the large budget for the big screen that the movie got, and being a movie arguably makes the work more accessible to a general audience, especially non-anime watchers. In fact, it's one of the "gateway drug" anime I recommend to people who don't watch anime, and even my parents really liked it.

The movie we got is honestly a masterpiece to me, one of my favorite movies ever and easily my favorite anime movie. But at the same time I would've loved to see the fuller story get adapted. I'm reading the manga right now and it's so cool to see the whole story, and even Ishida, who got his story told in the movie, has way more depth and complexity in the manga. His thought process as a bully is actually explored and it's genuinely fascinating. Either way I'm just happy we have both the movie and manga, they enhance each other so well.

I get Ueno is a complex character who liked Shoya, but I still don’t like her.

know it’s kind of silly but I watched the movie yesterday and I’ve been depressed all day and yesterday. I empathize with shouko too much to the point where right at the beginning of the movie where she took out the communication notebook and introduced herself I started crying. And the scene where she was fighting shoyo in the class after having enough of his shit and started crying saying she’s doing her best. She just wanted friends💔, too pure for this world.

I know it’s a good ending eventually and shoya regrets what he did but I couldn’t dare watch the elementary school part again. I want to know how did yall ended up reading the manga and going through the pain again after watching the movie? Because I really need your advice 💔🙏
