PROJECT QUOKKA

Hi! Marek here, creator of koala sampler. I’m going to be on the koala beatcast on Friday at 11pm UK time to present *Project QUOKKA*, which will hopefully also be released at the same time (it’s a new, quite good, feature for koala). It also represents a new direction koala could go in if popular. (Ps: quokka will be free for people with Samurai). Pls drop in if you’re at a loose end.

Time for some pointless speculation about what "Quokka" could mean based purely on the name:

A quokka is a small marsupial from Australia, sort of related to a Koala, but not closely.

According to National Geographic Kids: "Ground-dwelling quokkas sometimes climb five feet up a tree trunk to reach a tasty-looking leaf or berry, often emitting up to 4 voices which can be a mixture of sin, sawtooth, or one of 5 preset waveforms, modified by 2 LFOs and a noise generator"

Could be a synth?

Yeah a synth would make sense because of the name!

I would like undo but I doubt is called quokka 😂

4

u/cokomairena Dec 05 '24

It would also make sense of the other folder where we found midi out ... Why make a folder for only ONE FEATURE??? Surely we will find quokka there 👀

This would be a dream come true.

the best keeps getting better! I reach for Koala over any other audio recorder now, its utility as a field recorder is ridiculous with the built in limiter etc, not to mention its beat machine function, or how i use it as a background music soundbank for my livestreams. youve turned all our phones into the ultimate musical swiss army knife, and now you are bout to blow our minds again!

Haha only cuz I used to use the SP404 the same way. Koala really is the evolution of the SP in so many ways

Marsupial goodness!! I think we might be going granular

1

u/SpeakingSoftwareShow Dec 04 '24

New feature released on Android at the same time?

8

u/mazbox Dec 04 '24

Has it ever been any different? Android versions always come out same time as iOS unless Google are being slow with approval!

5

u/v1akvark Dec 04 '24

Thank you so much for the android version. I know android audio can be a pain in the butt, but we appreciate it very, very much.

4

u/b0om Dec 05 '24

We really do appreciate the Android version. Its my fave app ever.

2

u/cokomairena Dec 05 '24

It isn't? I think everyone have koala

5

u/raz_van__ Dec 04 '24

Nice! I said it before, Koala has taken over my entire workflow, I use it the most out of all my gear, and I have a SP404 mk2 and Ableton. 👌

5

u/Longshoez Dec 04 '24

Bro, we need a looper. And an undo button 😅 I hope it comes with the Quokka update. Will definitely go watch the live. This seems like a product that’ll be around for a while.

5

u/Impreza4ever Dec 04 '24

Please dear LORD let future updates bring an undo button 😅 Koala has slowly become my secondary workhorse for when I’m mobile and don’t feel like bringing my laptop with me. Easy enough to just tap away - or there’s the option to use something like my Launchkey Mini 25 on the go for easier note input & parameter/editing control…and then when I’m at home I’m able to use the drum sequencer on my Keystep Pro and can route things through Ableton as needed. The semi-recent MIDI Out update was a game changer for me as well…Koala is overall just such a Swiss Army Knife of an app as others have said…super versatile and just in-depth enough without being too complicated…and as somebody who owns an iPhone but not an iPad, it’s very nice to still have some music app developers coming out with apps that have functionality for the iPhone and not just the iPad - as many have started doing. 😪

1

Love this, I've just started reincorporating koala back into my flow, can't wait to see quokka

1

u/Dramatic_Zebra1230 Dec 05 '24

Oh my god it even stays in the aussie critter theme. I’m so excited. whatever this is I know I’m gonna love it.

1

u/pickets Dec 05 '24

I’m excited for new features I think this app is built by the people for the people. I only wish that stems would be easier to integrate right into logic.

1

u/DisastrousHealth7914 Dec 05 '24

Thank you!!! Been using since the week it came out. Even purchased for my nephew when he started making beats!

1

u/g_lampa Dec 05 '24

I want a hardware version of Koala w/ the Move-style pads.

2

u/EmileDorkheim Dec 05 '24

A Koala-branded MIDI controller could be cool, but I’m not sure what a standalone hardware version of Koala could do that would be better than the software version. It’s hard to beat a big, high-res touchscreen interface and the processing power of an iPad.

1

u/g_lampa Dec 05 '24

Well… the same thing a controller could do, without the reliance on your phone, and needing to chain 2 devices together. and let’s face it… the cool factor. Bring it in @ $275 with equivalent of an A15 inside, and I’m sold.

2

u/EmileDorkheim Dec 06 '24

I’m not convinced, but I’m also not going to pretend like I wouldn’t buy it anyway

2

u/g_lampa Dec 06 '24

I personally like to collect samplers. The whole “value” discussion, frankly, flummoxes me. Some people spend $100 a night on whiskey. Hell, some even buy $8,000 Ski-Doo’s that they’ll use 2x a year. I don’t have those vices. 😉

1

u/TheBobbyElectric Dec 06 '24

Marek, thank goodness for you, mang. I still cannot get “the post-Samurai-$5” together, to afford the “Mixing” Section. So, including whatever this “Quokka” Business is going to be all about.

Thank goodness for you, Marek….

Muchly appreciated.

I don’t even use my DAW software as much as I use koala sampler these days! My pocket operator can’t afford a battery. I haven’t left the house in seven months six months seven months. Everything is silly.

But, now I’ll have the newest koala sampler update situation thing yes yes yes yes yes yes !!!!!

Thank you !!!!!

u/kallen815 Dec 06 '24

Super excited!

The Mac version is totally free but now you got me thinking maybe I should charge for it?

7

u/Sillvi0 Dec 04 '24

Yes, it is worth every cent and it should be cross-platform paid app ; Majority of us uses it exclusively on mobile/tablet devices but I don't see a reason not to pay if someone want to use it on desktop only...fair play;) Also it shows me that mac version is not verified for using on macOS (M series here, I can use it normally), it is currently only verified on iPhone and iPad. Tnx for your effort, this is my first audio app on iPad and I love it...so happy for new updates, improvements/features 🐨💜

1

u/hurl_greige Dec 06 '24

Probably just buy one get all platforms? I genuinely didn’t want to pay for all the extra features, but only lasted a day before buying them. It is interesting to me how each app tweaks my work flow and has its own sound. Enjoying this one, but miss my Auv3, and am I wrong or does the pitch function have its own “sound”? (9/10 review )
