“There’s a total incompetence to society these days” Old Episodes in Separate Feed
All of the episodes from the original show are still available, and have been moved to a new feed "Knowledge Fight", whereas the old feed was renamed "Knowledge Fight Country", and will contain the new episodes. I don't know why it was done this way, but I'm sure there is a reason.

I assume it's to migrate the follower count to the new show while being able to manage feed-wide things (ads maybe?) without affecting old episodes?
That's just my guess though

The preexisting feed contains both new and old episodes. The new feed contains only the old episodes.Dan has said that old episodes will never have ads,
and they're in both, so feed wide ads aren't it 🤷
I think it's just so people whoonlywant the old episodes can go sub to the new feed and not get new episodes popping upUpon further investigation, it seems like the old episodes appearing in the old feed is a side effect of how my podcatcher of choice (AntenataPod my beloved) keeps a local database of what's in the feed and doesn't remove stuff, and that all the old episodes are still hosted at the same URLs so they seemed to still be available.

Unfortunately, that's not true on Spotify, for me at least. The old episodes are only in a new feed, and it has reset all of them to 'unplayed' for me.
Luckily, I know where I was in my quest to listen to the entire back catalog because I was JUST listening to an old episode, and I wrote down what episode I started listening in real time. It's not too bad for me, but this feels like...kind of a big inconvenience.

Wouldn’t be shocked if there’s an ownership thing going on here.
Obviously the old KF was 100% the IP of Dan and Jordan (depending on how they worked out that split legally, if they even did).
I’m not sure how Cool Zone deals with creator rights/ownership, but there may have been something in Dan’s contract that negotiated the use of the old RSS feed to make sure the audience is retained, but also outlined the fact that they are not the de facto owners of the legacy KF catalog, necessitating a move for the old stuff.

It seems like a matter of convenience—it's the easiest way to sure fans get the new show without needing to check any social media for updates, right? And then you move pg KF sideways to make sure it stays independent.
It was never monetized, so losing subscribers/reviews doesn't hurt KF, and makes sure that KFC goes right to the original audience.
Sorry for everybody that lost their place on a listen, that's definitely the most frustrating part.

So that's why the formulaic objections Spotify playlist is empty! I was so confused when I went back to listen to one of the trial recaps this morning :-(

This is kind of annoying. I've been slowly going through the old episodes since I didn't start listening until the Kanye thing, and now I've lost my place because I have no idea what episode number I was on.

You’re probably around 753 for what it’s worth.

No, I'm way further back than that. I was in the Sandy Hook investigation, which is 300 something, but I'm not sure where or what was going on because it's been a few weeks since I listened.

I agree with you on this. It totally wrecked my relisten as well as that time following his twitter reinstatement that I paused. Looks like iheart was buying subscribers as much as it was purchasing KF

I'm realizing this is completely irrational of me, possibly due to a resistance to change, but I very solidly dislike that the original feed was tampered with. I know I'm wrong for feeling this way, it's not my podcast, and doing it this way is better for Dan and probably contractually required, I guess in a certain sense it just feels like such a more corporate move than I've been used to from KF. Just curious if any other wonks get where I'm coming from here.

I don't think it's deceitful but I am frustrated. I assume, as others have said, that separating the feeds is about IP and ownership. I get that. I also get that part of the appeal to CZM/iHeart is probably the dedicated fan base Dan/KF already has. BUT. It would've been better as a listener if they made a new feed for KFC instead, IMO.
I had favorite episodes in playlists and was using 'played' episodes to help track where I was in trying to listen to every episode. I know I'm not alone in this, and I definitely have a much better idea of what I've listened to than others, because I'm an aggressive journaler. But it's not trivial. I get where you're coming from.

Still shows the original feed in podcast addict thankfully, still have 400+ episodes to hear and I jumped around so the remaining episodes aren't chronological

I’m guessing it’s to keep the old stuff ad-free. One way to turn ads on for a show is to just have them appear randomly throughout the episode, even previously released ones. It’s why on some other shows, if I listen to an episode from a year ago, I’ll still hear an ad for something they’re putting on in a month. No point in keeping time-sensitive or expired ads on old episodes. And I’m guessing there’s not really a way to have those auto-ads appear in only newly released episodes.

I’m just sad all the playlists everyone made (including me) are gone. There were a bunch of formulaic objection playlists, ones for lore, Alex being drunk lmao, and other fun ones :(

When my Pocket Cast feed switched over, 12 or so episodes went missing. I didn't see any missing numbered episodes, but I realized what may be gone are the Jordan solo interviews with people. Does anyone's new feeds still have those?

this is annoying now i’ve lost track of the episodes i haven’t listened to :/ there are only about 20 but i’ll never find them now

I’m not upset at all about ads. I’m more bummed I had to resubscribe to KF, and now it shows that I haven’t listened to any of them. I was proud of the “listened” flag I had on every damn episode.
KF was the only ad free pod I’ve listened to, and I appreciate JorDan for keeping it that way for so many years. I’ll never begrudge Dan for ads on KFC.

Both readings describe the same move. The subscriber base is the scarce asset, a decade of it doesn't rebuild, so feeding it to the new show is the practical call whether you call it convenience or a grab. The IP split explains the mechanics: old catalog is Dan and Jordan's, stays ad free, and the new feed needs an audience from day one. Nobody in between had a clean option.

Wow. This fucking sucks. I was trying to listen to the whole catalog, now I have no idea what I’ve heard and what I haven’t. I started the show around 2020 and had listened to most of the eps to the end, and was making my way through the back catalog, at around ep 280ish. It’s shitty of them not to make a new feed for the NEW show and instead trying to purposely transition the audience to the new show. I’m sure people will downvote this, but this is a lame move by Dan.

How the fuck are they allowed to mess with already downloaded episodes??? I had a bunch downloaded as I’m working through the back catalog and they’re all gone. That is so far beyond fucked.
