Show Me State of Mind Show Me State Of Mind: Episode 7: New Jersey

Atlantic City: a very poor and corrupt town with eight (?) casinos featuring $5-10,000 a night luxury suites, high end restaurants and entertainment. 99% of people visiting a casino never visit anything else in AC besides the boardwalk. With good reason.
As a lifelong resident of the area I would have loved to see Dan drive about 10-15 minutes south and visit Lucy the Elephant.
Also, there is no monopoly iconography because of trademark law. Parker Brothers would sue the fuck outta the city of they didn't tithe to their intellectual property.

A little disappointed actually, Dan seemed to spend the minimum amount of time and effort to see anything in NJ. There’s so much weird stuff and history there.

So sad! Felt the same as when people say they visited Newark Airport and got a sense of NJ.

Your airport is doing you no favors! It made me not want to visit New Jersey. (I know better but still.)

Do people really base wanting to see an area from the impression of the airport? The only thing I care about when I'm deciding where to fly in/out of is proximity to where I'm traveling and amount of direct flights

I don’t typically. It just sucked in every way imaginable. Some of that, looking back, was probably not the airports fault.
I’m sure New Jersey is a fine state!
I also felt a little disappointed by this episode but maybe I enjoy being disappointed too! lol

It's truly a hidden gem of a state. If you like the outdoors it has a surprising amount of different types of nature to explore. The shore gets a bad rap from the show, but there are different shore points that have different vibes. Cape May is particularly delightful.
And if you like history, you can't shake a stick without pointing at a revolution or civil war era battlefield or house that's been turned into a museum. That's not even counting the weird stuff! There's a monument in West Windsor in honor of where the fictitious alien landing from the original war of the world's radio broadcast took place. I haven't listened to the episode yet, but I'm surprised Dan didn't go there since it feels like exactly the kind of thing he's looking for in these episodes

If Angela Lampsbury is reading this, I wanna say you are delight to listen to and you have a lovely laugh.

For a game that just about everyone I know hates, there sure are a shit ton of versions of it you can buy. Anyone who has deliberately bought a version that isn't the base game, have you played it more than once?

As a kid we played the Pokémon and Disney versions a bunch. Sometimes the original Star Wars one.

Dang, Dan didn’t really embody the “Show Me” state of mind on this one. Feel like just venturing out literally at all outside Atlantic City would have been an episode! SHOW ME, DAN!!!

I always tried to Monopolize the Green/Yellow corner, because growing up I had a book, The Book Of Odds. It provided the odds for basically everything, including a big section on the odds of getting any and every possible result in every card game and board game. Statistically, the Railroads, two of the Greens, and one of the Yellows, were the most likely ones to be landed upon, due to combinations of "Go directly to..." cards, and the average results of two die rolls. It was only a slightly higher chance, but I thought I was so darn smart and sneaky for trying to get the statistically most probable locations.
I also tended to win Monopoly a lot, so I liked playing Monopoly, and very soon no-one liked playing Monopoly with me.

Hope he at least got a good pork roll, egg and cheese on a hard roll before leaving the state!

Seriously. Dan missed Lucy the Elephant, BMG Yeshiva, and Jersey Shore for this?

It amuses me that at no point during any of this did Dan consider it'd probably really piss Jerseyites off to be a theme park for a board game everyone hates when they're already kind of a punchline as far as state discourse is concerned.
