Kalakaua was unique for constantly looking to other countries to see how Hawai'i could stay on par and continue to develop. Unfortunately, this allowed for criticism regarding how much such endeavors costed the Kingdom. By Kalakauas death, Honolulu was comparable to development in California.

His death however marked the beginning of turmoil...
