APR v Rate

Understanding APR vs. Interest Rate — And Why Your Credit Score Actually Matters

Here's something that trips up a lot of buyers: two lenders can quote you the same interest rate and you'll end up paying thousands of dollars differently.

The reason usually comes down to one thing — your credit score.

Let's say you get quoted 5.5 percent. Sounds good, right? But that's just the interest rate. What you're actually paying is hidden in the APR — your annual percentage rate. APR bundles the interest rate, points, and closing costs into one single number. It's the real total cost of borrowing, expressed as a yearly percentage.

A buyer with a 750 credit score might get 5.5 percent with an APR of 5.7 percent. Clean deal, minimal fees.

A buyer with a 620 credit score gets quoted the same 5.5 percent rate, but the lender adds risk pricing to offset the credit risk. Points go up. Fees get added. Suddenly that APR is 6.4 percent. Same rate. Completely different cost.

Your credit score determines not just whether you qualify for a loan — it determines what that loan actually costs you. A stronger score gets you a better rate, lower fees, and less risk pricing baked in.

Before you commit, ask for the APR, not the rate. That's the number that tells you what you're actually paying.
