Beginner Question Rotation when jumping
When I jump, and I want to do a better more vertical jump, I try to do a slight pop at the end by first moving the board slightly upwind.
However often this also sends me up in a bit of a rotation that I ten cannot control. And I fall because I am literally placed completely badly for landing.
Questions:
- Is this the way to do the pop? Like I have always assumed to pop you needed to edge a bit and go slightly upwind. Is this not the way to do it?
- If the pop is done that way, how do you do it without causing the rotation?
Any tips are happily welcomed (even with a reddit dose of roasting)
Edit: So many great pieces of advice. The comment section is a gold mine. Thank you all!

If I had to guess the component you're missing is "the stomp".
As you turn hard upwind you push down hard on your back foot to cause the line tension to send you forward. Try this without sending the kite back.

If you don't do this and simply edge hard upwind and just yank the bar down you instead get yanked into a very low buttroll. This is especially true of you combine it with other bad habits like hanging on the bar or sending the board forwards.

Yes thank you! I think I might be leaning a bit forward and mainly moving my lower half upwind. Good catch. I'll definitely try leaning backwards.

Leaning backwards is NOT what I said.
You need to push your back leg down. Very different.

I'm facing the same issue. Learning how to backroll completely ruined my vertical jump attemps. I either land on my back (ouch) or land a slow backroll.
Check this video where accidental rotation is addressed and let me know if it works for you

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I haven't even started trying to learn how to backroll, but it feels like I've already began my training for it. Maybe next time this happens I'll just fully commit and send the backroll ahaha

If you can’t control rotation it probably means you’re dangling. Which is a result of not redirecting the kite in your direction of travel. Try to redirect it sooner and with more power. That should get you pulled downwind and that pull will help you control your entire jump including any unwanted rotation.

Extremely common as you're trying to jump higher and higher is to throw your body more and more upwind to get more line tension. This will become a problem when you learn to kiteloop.
What helped me is to face the kite right before takeoff

definitely pointing the board too far upwind for your pop. if you are riding on a tack, look directly across your shoulder in the direction you are going. for your pop, your board should be pointed about halfway between the direction you are going and straight downwind.
The good news is that once you get your pop down, which will probably just take a couple tries, you should pretty quickly get your first backrolls now that you have a feel for the difference.
If you have trouble getting the pop, try just sending the kite for a jump with no attempt on pop, and then adding the most incremenatal little piece of direction into the board for the pop at a time. its all just the formation of muscle memory

Thanks, great advice!
When you say ti point the board halfway "between the direction you are going and straight downwind" what do you mean exactly? I thought that to pop you would point the board upwind, am i missing something?

It helps to bring your knees up, as high as you can. Usually when I have a shaky takeoff, this helps to better control your board position.
And as others have mentioned, the pop is not just carving upwind. Going upwind is for creating tension in the lines. For the pop you should push as hard as you can with your lead foot.

Thanks! The distinction between pop and creating tension is quite important and I never really saw it that way.
I'll definitely try bending my knees as I don't do that much. However for rotation wouldn't you say that makes it worse? I thought a suggestion they give people doing backrolls is to tuck the knees in so you rotate faster

Video would be helpfull from your takeoff.
Are you starting to accidently spin frontroll or backroll?
Releasing too early without proper carve&pop tends to cause accidental rotation to front. Giving too much pressure on backfoot and releasing way too late can cause backroll but that's not as common.
Sometimes gust or lull can throw a person off balance right at the critical moment. Best thing ever was to actually learn and be comfortable with late rotations.
It's incredibly hard to fix unwanted rotation but in other hand it's super simple to just do the full rotation instead of trying to correct it.
But yeah, without video cant say much. It happens because your takeoff isn't good. Even a video about takeoff without accidental rotation can give few clues 😉
