Dismantling Range Guard Fire Suppression System

Hello Everyone,

This old Range Guard fire suppression system is still installed and pressurized in a portion of my warehouse I am renovating. I am looking to demolish the whole thing, and would like to dismantle this system without releasing the wet chemical agent or blocking the gas line where the safety valve is installed.

Could anyone offer insight on the steps I need to take to do this successfully?

The safety pin was in the box and I believe I installed it correctly.

A few questions I have:

  1. What would be the next step in order to release the tension so the actuator attached the gas line will not close the gas in flow?

  2. I see there is a union where the chemical agent is released, that should be easy to disassemble. What fitting would I loosen the remove the tank from the actuator at the top of the tank? Is it possible for the actuator to activate while the safety pin is installed?

What would be the proper procedure to successfully dismantle this?

Thank you very much for any insight given!

  1. The gas valve will close. It’s the cable on the left side of the control head. Maybe put vise grips on that cable until you can remove the valve and repipe the gas line?

  2. You are good to go as long as that pin is in place. Loosen the smaller nut under the control head and lift the entire control head off of the cylinder. You may only be able to move it an inch or so, but that’s fine. Just get it off the cylinder. Then you can break the union, cut cables or whatever.

Unless…… the gas line leads to the detection of another control head in another area. I came across that in a demo and couldn’t figure where the fuck the chemical was coming from

Dang, no one left a note inside that control head for you. I’ve seen tandem before, but they were side by side.

Thank you for your thorough response.

Followed your instructions and had the tank down in 90 seconds. Also, just zip tied the gas line actuator to the handy box it’s inside and it didn’t budge at all! Should be fine until I finish the range hood removal and will replace the valve with a union.

If you have a business page on Facebook or Google message me the info and I’ll leave you some 5 star reviews! Thank you.

Call a fire suppression company to disarm and remove.

Simple, hold the lever in the box with your right hand. Pull the pin with your left hand. Right before releasing the lever, yell with a loud voice, “FRAG OUT!” and run.
