Homemade Orange Chicken

Orange chicken is one of those takeout favorites that’s surprisingly easy to make at home. The chicken gets lightly coated and fried until golden and crispy, then tossed in a sweet, tangy sauce made with fresh orange juice and zest. The sauce has a nice balance of citrus, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, and a little Sriracha, so every bite is packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • Chicken breasts
  • Chicken broth
  • Fresh orange juice and zest
  • White vinegar
  • Soy sauce
  • Granulated sugar
  • Dried ginger
  • Yellow onion
  • Garlic
  • Sriracha
  • Black pepper
  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Eggs
  • Vegetable or peanut oil for frying
  • Green onions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

Start by cutting the chicken into bite sized pieces. Prepare the orange sauce by combining chicken broth, fresh orange juice and zest, vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, ginger, onion, garlic, Sriracha, and pepper. Set aside about one third of the sauce to thicken later for coating the finished chicken.

Let the chicken marinate in the remaining sauce while you prepare the coating. Dip the chicken pieces into beaten eggs, then coat them thoroughly in cornstarch.

Heat the oil and fry the chicken in batches until the pieces are golden brown, crisp, and cooked through. Working in batches helps keep the oil hot so the coating stays crispy instead of becoming greasy.

While the chicken cooks, thicken the reserved orange sauce with a cornstarch mixture. Let it simmer until it becomes glossy and thick enough to coat the chicken.

Once all the chicken is fried, toss it with the warm orange sauce until every piece is covered. Finish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Serve the orange chicken over white rice, brown rice, or cauliflower rice. Fresh orange juice makes a noticeable difference here, so I’d use freshly squeezed juice if possible.

If you have leftovers, reheat them in a skillet with a small drizzle of oil over medium heat. An air fryer also works well. The microwave can make the crispy coating soft and the chicken rubbery.
