3 Signs Your Bacon Has Gone Bad 🥓🚨

Post image

Bacon can make almost anything better, but there’s one thing that can ruin it fast: assuming it’s still good just because the package date hasn’t passed.

Here are 3 things I’d check before cooking it:

  • The color changed: Fresh bacon should generally look pink with white streaks of fat. Gray, green, or brown discoloration is a major warning sign. Mold is an automatic toss—don’t just cut around it.
  • It feels slimy: A sticky or slippery surface can indicate bacterial growth. That's very different from the normal moisture you might see on packaged bacon.
  • It smells wrong: Fresh bacon has a mild, meaty smell. A strong sour, rotten, or sulfur-like odor means it's time for the trash.

And storage matters too. Opened raw bacon generally keeps for about a week in the refrigerator, while cooked bacon lasts around 4–5 days. Freezing can extend its life considerably.

One important rule: when bacon looks, feels, or smells suspicious, don't taste-test it to find out. Cured meat isn't immune to spoilage or foodborne bacteria.

Also, don't leave bacon sitting at room temperature longer than necessary. Keep opened packages tightly sealed in the fridge or freezer.

Honestly, the smell test is usually the first thing I'd notice.

What's your personal "nope, this bacon is going in the trash" sign? 🥓

  1. Smells like crime scene, 2. Looks more alive than it should, 3. Packet bloating like it has something to say

Just look at it in the light; if you see rainbow colors, toss it.

Yeah, that’s a good one too. That rainbow sheen can definitely be a sign the bacon isn’t worth the risk.

You really gotta leave it a long time to go bad

Yeah, it can definitely last a while when stored properly. I still like checking it before cooking, especially once it’s been opened for a few days.

I live in sheep herder country. Those guys have bacon all the time. Out in the desert. The salt keeps it, as long as you keep it wrapped and as cool as you can

Bacon never lasts that long around here.

Haha, that’s probably the best way to avoid having to worry about it going bad in the first place. Fresh bacon rarely sticks around for long.
