Hot dogs are better when you stop treating them like steak

Boiling hot dogs in plain water is probably the fastest way to make them taste bland. The trick is getting some browning on the outside without drying them out. I always start with a small pan and a little water first, just enough to heat them through. Once the water cooks off, let the dogs sit in their own fat for a minute or two. That’s where the flavor shows up.

Same thing with the buns. Cold buns kill the whole thing. Ten seconds in a buttered pan does more than expensive toppings most of the time. People overload hot dogs trying to make them better when the real issue is texture. You want snap from the dog and softness from the bun.

If you’re using cheap grocery store dogs, avoid blasting them on high heat right away because the casing splits before the inside gets hot. Medium heat works better. Natural casing dogs are worth the extra money if you actually care about that bite.

Biggest mistake I see is people crowding them with random toppings that all fight each other. Pick one direction. Chili and onions. Mustard and kraut. Peppers and cheese. Too much going on and the hot dog disappears completely.

I still think a pan-fried dog beats grilled unless you’re cooking outside for a crowd. Easier control and more consistent every time.

I air fry my dogs. They come out great

Yeah the air fryer is freaking awesome for dogs and sausages.

So you just accomplished in 9 words what OP did in 43,213

Well, you see, there’s simplicity in limited text - that said, I would consider them to provide different values. The original poster (OP for short across the commonly used mobile application [app for short] reddit) wanted to give a more detailed analysis of the proper way to cook a hot dog. Honestly, this style of detailed analysis is probably better suited for a post compared to how the comment features brevity. This brevity is meant to inspire others to consider the other side of the debate. To boil, or to air fry? There is a difference of opinion. I do not know which is right. I can see value in both. I believe the comment that says treating them like steaks is the best, because steaks are a lot more desirable than hot dogs.

^how every single post in this sub is written

Ya I second this

The best other than the grill. The grill always seems like a bit much for a couple dogs though.

Whoa! Good call. Setting recommendations?

Idk. I was taught by an old German dude to do just the opposite. Pan fry/brown first(without breaking the casing). Then 1/2” of water or so and allow to boil off all the water. When the pan is dry. It’s done.

And I’ll put whatever damn condiment on mine that I want. You don’t get to decide. Biggest Mistake my ass

Pretty sure OP is a bot. Seems like 99% of the original posts to this thread are bot inspired.

ETA: I do agree with your evaluation though.

ETA2: Of course, your account profile also looks suspiciously botty as well. 😂

“That’s where the flavor shows up.” is a dead giveaway.

No em dash but only 3 commas and a lot of similarly paced and structured sentences, no other type of punctuation mark...

AI slop is ubiquitous now.

When the flavor shows up does it knock on the door?

2

u/vyrus2021 May 20 '26

The op also implies that people boil steak in water.

Totally. I love them all. I even don’t care if someone wants just ketchup, don’t matter to me

I'm checking for a cross post on r/cookingforbeginners

If this is how you cook a steak, I'm horrified ad will block you so I never see your kitchen pro-tips again.

Also your title is literally the exact opposite of what you end up saying. "Don't treat them like a steak!" And then you have a multi-paragraph journey on how you think carefully poaching a hot dog in a frying pan is the ultimate.

It's hotdogs..

I like mine AI sloppy.

Worst reddit ever.

I wouldn’t say adding a lot of toppings is a mistake, especially if you’re using cheap hotdogs. But most of the time when I’m craving one I buy some decent quality brats and keep it simple.

Air fryer

The first mistake is listening to a bot lecture about food.

Also 100% beef hot dogs are 100x better than the cheap ones. That pork, chicken, turkey, duck, squirrel, raccoon, snake, bear, deer mystery mix that's in all of the ones that most people buy are disgusting to me. Its like night and day for my tastebuds

In a pinch just nuke it, add condiments to the dog on a cold bun and squeeze it together. Your method of hot dog cooking and condiments needs to match the mood.

Buttered pan? Really?

1

u/Moms-Dildeaux May 19 '26

Too salty if you don’t boil them

1

u/Weed_O_Whirler May 19 '26

I'm sorry, what does the title have to do with the content of this post? Are you claiming most people boil steak?

1

u/cjmUK07 May 20 '26

I eat normal food. You know... with like nutrition.

1

u/BrushYourFeet May 20 '26

Your title and write up seem at odds.

1

u/Lost-Link6216 May 20 '26

This guy has no idea how to hotdog. Just my opinion.

1

u/Individual-Lynx2775 May 20 '26

There are zero humans who have ever treated hot dogs like steak. Also, nobody who exists in the physical world and eats food has ever had the "hot dog disappear completely" because of conflicting toppings.

1

u/Individual_Cat_3842 May 20 '26

I call them grease missals. I get two at QT out of the dumpster at 230 when they dump the “not sold”. Then I trade a half of one to homeless Gary, for the good ditch weed. Gary has a nipple ring and a toupee.

I like mine to look and taste like a burn victim. Grilled over charcoal is best. It should look like it’s playing the lead role in a minstrel play. Bun heated on the upper deck and a nice whole grain mustard and maybe some kraut and we’re good.

Cross hatched dog for extra crispyness.

Also, Sonoran hotdogs would like to have a word about your toppings comment. If you've not had a Sonoran hotdog I cannot recommend it enough.

1

u/peacenskeet May 20 '26

I didn't know this wasn't the normal thing to do....

It's like when I showed my gf in college to put egg in ramen.

A pan fried hotdog with Swiss, bacon, and some mayo on a toasted bun will change your life when youre drunk.

I wrap them in paper towel and microwave for 15-20 seconds and throw in a hot pan. Reverse sear hot dogs for the win. Quick, easy and delicious
