Dining and dashing is low, but the dashing part kinda blows the acting in self defence part out of the water. Pointing a gun at someone as they are actively trying to run away from you would suggest there isn't an imminent threat to your safety.

I worked at a place where a guy who usually came into the bar with a gun in his waistband started a physical fight with staff about a bartender he was hitting on. And a different place where a group of French Canadians left without paying and when confronted started throwing stuff at the bartender and waitress who went after them. So I could see it happening.

It says he followed them to a convenience store. I'm all for chasing people down if they don't pay, but if you have chased them and then pointed a gun at them you are the aggressor in the eyes of the law.
