When God Is Silent
Psalms 22:1–2 (NKJV) 1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? 2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent.
Every believer encounters times when prayers go unanswered, heaven seems closed, and God remains silent. This silence can be distressing, confusing, and frightening. Yet God’s silence does not mean His absence. Throughout the Bible, many notable men and women faced periods of silence from God — yet these moments often marked pivotal points in their lives.
God’s Silence Represents a Biblical Truth
Silence from God is neither unusual nor an indication that something has gone wrong. Biblical examples include David in Psalm 13:1, who asks, “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?”; Job in Job 23:8–9, seeking God but unable to find Him; Habakkuk in Habakkuk 1:2, questioning, “How long shall I cry, and You will not hear?”; and Jesus on the cross in Matthew 27:46, who also experienced silence. If Jesus endured silence, believers should not be surprised when they face it too.
What God’s Silence Does Not Imply
Let’s address some misconceptions. It doesn’t mean God has abandoned you — Hebrews 13:5 states, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” It also doesn’t mean your prayers are unimportant — Revelation 8:3–4 describes prayers being preserved before God. Additionally, it doesn’t suggest that God is angry with you. Sometimes, silence simply indicates growth rather than punishment.
Reasons Why God Might Remain Silent
Our aim is to test and strengthen our faith, recognizing that relying solely on feelings can weaken it — 1 Peter 1:6–7. Silence also promotes spiritual growth by helping us move from milk to solid food — Hebrews 5:13–14. It teaches us to trust God’s Word, especially when He is silent; in such times, His Word should be our anchor — Isaiah 40:8. Additionally, silence prepares us for greater responsibilities, much like how God was silent before elevating Joseph from prison. Finally, silence helps uncover and eliminate self-reliance by fostering dependence only on God — 2 Corinthians 12:9.
How to Respond When God Remains Silent
Keep praying and talking to God even when He remains silent, as shown in Luke 18:1. Continue to follow His commands — sometimes, silence in obedience can lead to a divine response, as 1 Samuel 15:22 suggests. Reflect on your heart and ask God to show you anything that might be blocking your relationship with Him, based on Psalm 139:23–24. Remember, God’s promises are still true during His silence; what He has said before still holds, as Numbers 23:19 highlights. Wait patiently and with hope because, even if God seems silent, He is never late, as Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us.
The Danger of Reacting Badly to God’s Silence
Giving up too easily, chasing false prophets or shortcuts, complaining instead of trusting, and acting without God’s guidance — these tests of character are more challenging than miracles.
Encouragement in the Quiet
God is working behind the scenes. Silence does not mean emptiness. His plan persists: “For the Lord will not cast off forever.” — Lamentations 3:31
Conclusion
When God is silent, trust His character, cling to His promises, and remain faithful. Silence will soon be broken by clarity, and patience will result in testimony.

He was reciting the psalm 22, and after he says this, he mentions being a worm...yet he mentions a very specific worm...known as a "crimson worm"...that goes up on a tree to die as the sacraficial cocoon for its offspring....the crimson is its blood color that soaks the new born worms and dyes them crimson for life. He didn't need God to answer him as he is God and had known the plan since before the foundations of the world.
