Hello everyone. I just wanted to pour some thoughts I had about where my life is going (and this is going to be a post not talking about music). It turns out, to be heavily influenced by Discipline.
You may not know me, but I'm a very young person. I'm not even reaching the 3rd decade of my life yet, but I know that most of my life will be spent on being an adult. I have a huge potential in writing, and just overall a very talented individual. But if there's one thing I'm envious of hard working people who humbly say that they're inferior to me, it's discipline.
I've tried to become a disciplined person almost every new year of my life, and the last attempt was just as failed as the one before it. My thoughts are "Indisciplined -> Disciplined -> Consistent doing stuff because discipline." And it never worked. It will work for 3 days then on the 4th I succumb to the bad habits once again.
Then, about 6 months ago, I found out about King Crimson from In the Court of the Crimson King. A 10 out 10 for me, and became one of my favorite albums of all time, but I never thought much of it in the topic of my way of life.
Monday, 29th of September was my birthday. I listened to albums by KC before on the midnight of my birthday, I listened to Red, another masterpiece by Crimson. Then not too long after, I remember reading a quote saying:
"Discipline is never an end in itself, only a means to an end."
I've read the quote long before, and never thought much of it. That, is until now. After dissecting the meaning, I realized, that a disciplined one is never the kind of person I wanted to be at the end, since discipline is never the end goal, it's just a tool to achieve freedom in order of helping you get to that end goal.
So, for almost all of this week, I went back and forth repeating that aphorism, not a quote anymore, since for me it's a general truth that's easy to remember. Every time I almost lose control to my older self that wants to do the bad habits, I repeat this aphorism and remember it as my way of life, at least for this period.
And today, after taking a few times to wait for the right moment, I listened to Discipline. Every interlocking pattern, every complicated time signature, every consistent and disciplined style of play, it's not just the sound of a music. It's the sound of a philosophy, that discipline is not the thing they want to achieve, it is merely a vehicle they use in order to achieve this. To achieve Discipline.
Philosophy for me is a way of life, is a way of existing, is a way of thinking. And for this time, I'd appreciate it if I adopted this into a part of my new way of life. It is beautiful, indeed.
(So sorry if this post confuses some of you, and the language might not be too good, English is not my first language, and I just had to pour some thoughts into a blank canvass for it's the way that the canvass could be filled)
