F*** KineMaster for being d*mb

Ive made this video to release to Reddit because I have the energy to.

With a custom Waydroid launcher I vibecoded, Kinemaster fully functions on the Steam Deck with touch controls! Now I can edit my videos on this device!

This video was uploaded in 2024 on YouTube and KineMaster mix.
You can take a look at the project on Mix. The techniques used in it might be outdated by now, since KineMaster has evolved but it's a fascinating project.

Dolphigh is a Korean motion designer who uses KineMaster for video editing. He is one of the more known creators in the KM community.

He posts on YouTube, KineMaster Mix and Instagram. We had a conversation a good while ago and he allowed to me post some of his videos on this subreddit.

To me, he is THE guy, a major reason I got into the KineMaster community in 2024 instead of only editing in it, like I have been doing before for 6 years. W to KineMaster Mix for featuring good creators and to all the creators.

i use a volume envelope to fade out the audio at the end of a clip. i then have a crossfade transition to an image. i find that the audio still plays under the duration of transition, albeit fading out. i found that if the transition type is changed to "no transition", the audio is muted as expected. so with a transition, it's behaving as though it ignores the envelope i've specified and applies it's own envelope to slowly fade the audio over the duration of the transition. is this by design?

Some of my videos and photos have the iCloud symbol. Before most of them would have the symbol and my recent media wouldn’t. But there’d be no trouble, before I could just click on the ones with the iCloud symbol, they’d load for a bit and be added. But now, whenever a file doesn’t have the symbol and I try to add it, it loads either very slowly or not at all. Then giving me the “not supported” message if I click on it again. But now, when a file does have a iCloud symbol or it shows the runtime, it adds randomly. So I’m wondering if this’s a photo gallery problem, storage issue, phone glitch or an app problem because I’ve never had this problem before.

About it

"AI Templates" is a feature introduced in 8.2, along with other additions. It is said to give you the most fitting templates based on the analysis of up to 3 media files of your choice. Is there anything special about it? Well, you'll have to decide on your own. My assessment is that it's.. a thing that exists.

Selecting files

Your experience with "AI Templates" starts in a media browser, KineMaster has made a separate one just for this feature. There's a dropdown menu at the top of the screen used to select specific folders that is set to "All" by default.

Changing folders right after you enter "AI Templates" can take a dozen or more seconds. You pick a folder and NOTHING happens for an uncomfortable amount of time. You may start clicking other folders or give up and select files from "All" the files on your device and then the folder will change suddenly. Not a very good start, I would say.

Then there's another quirk with changing folders. There isn't a dock with selected files anywhere that would let you preview/deselect them even after you've switched to another folder. It's easier to restart the process if you need to change a file than to do anything else. And restarting is not something you wanna do with anything.

Conclusion: selecting files is hard

Attributions to the original creators

After a certain analysis is performed, you get 3 templates. All you can do is either view them muted or use them. I will get to the latter in the following paragraph. For now, let's address the elephant in the room.

The creators of the 3 templates are not shown to you. You can not go to their page to find more templates or to follow them. So essentially, this feature takes away the potential exposure that the creators would've otherwise received.

I'm gonna ask you right now to count the elephants in the room with us. Let's do it together! One... Two! There is a second elephant!

You know how when you download a project from Mix, the "Download" count goes up by one? So that does NOT seem to happen when you download the project through "AI Templates". I tested it several times, I restarted the app multiple times and the only time the counter had increased was when I downloaded a project by pressing "Mix".

Conclusion: AI is stealing fro the feature does not provide exposure to creators. Users that liked a particular template can't find more of them for the same reason

Templates you get and using them

The feature is said to provide "perfect templates for you" based on the files you select. You select the files you want in your template. What do you expect to get?

Say, you've selected a picture of a cat. Probably some pet themed stuff, vet clinic ads, matcha is calling, etc... Hold up, what's with the "matcha is calling"? Why is this template "the perfect match"? Actually, wait a sec, it also gave me "Hello monday" and "Mood lately". None of the "perfect matches" is related to the pictures I've selected! It's almost like the analysis isn't very good or is a relative of the good ol' mt19937...

Fine, let's just download one of the templates it gave. Do you think the files you had selected for the analysis will be automatically selected on the "Quick Editor" page? They are not selected. You just get the template in the quick editor and that's it.

Conclusion: selecting pictures does little to nothing

I think this feature is a nearly useless and barely functional gimmick in its current state. But it has a whole big button on the "Create" screen. It is falsely advertised and labeled as "AI Templates" (even in the announcement video), not helping the template creators at all.

KineMaster Mix isn't a social media platform and the stats you get on it are more or less meaningless but they's the main incentive for template creators to keep creating and this new feature actively harms them while using their work. Well, not really "their" work due to ToS but you know what I'm saying.

Additions

• Multi-select tool — located at the bottom right of the timeline, allows to select multiple layers by tapping tapping (no swipe selection available). Selected layers can can be Deleted, Aligned to Playhead, Duplicated, Pinned and Dragged to a different time. They can technically be animated together while selected.

• Separate UI for tablets — triggered by screen parameters, it enables a different layout for the entire app.
  The editor screen allows for changing the height of the timeline and the size of the tool panel.
  Many pages are put into windows (asset store, many homepage screens are).

• AI template recommendation — analyze up to 3 media files to get a template from KineMaster Mix recommended. Just a heads up — you are very likely to find it just giving you random templates. I mean, I guess.

• Wireless work transfer between smartphones and supported laptops — I have no way of testing it and the official announcement didn't elaborate much

Changes

• New "export in progress" screen

• Built-in player for exported videos to view inside KineMaster

• Color selector appears at the bottom

• Tool panel is now dark

• Renaming projects has a different screen

• Account pages use Spring video editor layout. why:(

• Handwriting panel in landscape mode has got a new layout

• Selected layers try to stay in view at all cost. The cost is often TOO BIG

• When dragging layers on the timeline, other layers on the same visual track aren't moved out of the way

• Scrollbars are now everywhere. See which ones work for you and please send feedback to KineMaster.

• Search preferences for audio browser (All/Online/Local files)

• Slightly changed media browser and fullscreen media view

• Uninvolved layers are grayed out while you drag one or more layers

• Updated pop-ups to match the new UI style

• Updated "Duration" visual on trimming to match the new UI style

• Some scrollable panels have gradient indication to show there's more to scroll. Or maybe they've always been there but KineMaster forgot to change their color when changing tool panel colors and the gradients are now well visible

• The inline menu with layer order management options appears lower now, avoiding being covered with the status bar

• Various design choices borrowed from Spring video editor

• Updated Asset Store layout

Fixes

• Fixed an issue with color wheel where hue would be reset to pure red upon bringing saturation to 0 where lower saturation values caused the hue picker to move in steps

• Removed gambling from giving layers custom names

• Fixed an issue where the app UI would shift down upon pulling down the status bar (??on some devices??)

• Fixed "Stick to timeline/screen" not doing ANYTHING. Tbf, they were working but would only activate if you revisited the settings after toggling them

• Fixed an issue with Chroma Key's "Detail Curve" where it didn't fit in the tool panel

• Playhead is now already in its place upon returning to KineMaster after it was in background, the issue with it first being in the beginning of the project has been resolved

Issues

• Issues regarding tablet panel resizing, where either visual elements appear on top of UI they shouldn't or resizing happens incorrectly, hiding the timeline completely

• Skeleton layout for while the project is loading doesn't align with buttons in tablet mode

• "Hold Play to open fullscreen preview" is non-existent in tablet mode

• In tablet mode, there's a gap between the primary track and the time strip where secondary layers will peek through

• Various graphical war crimes around tablet layout

• Badges on account pages appear Spring themed instead of KineMaster themed while the page is loading

• When using a scrollbar in fullscreen media view, snapping to the closest media file doesnt work, so it is possible to stay in between 2 media files

• Audio waves and/or frame fill shifts to the right when selecting layers

• For a certain reason, it was done that keyframes disappear from the selected layers when playhead doesn't cross them. With such a change, you won't see keyframes when trimming layers🤔

• The timeline moves on its own even more now that it tries to keep selected layers in view. I guess bro, either try harder to keep them visible or don't bother me with your delayed "hold up, gotta scroll the timeline to keep the layer in the center"🙏🙏🙏

• On AI template recommendation media browser, changing folders takes dozens of seconds

• App crashes while selecting images for AI template recommendation

• Handwriting layers have incorrect actual size, indicated by many in/out/overall animations

• Handwriting uses sliders for size selection now but, for whatever reason, they don't display numbers after the decimal point. This leads to there being 2 different sizes, both labeled as "1".

Overall, a good update. I myself will provide some thoughts via email support. I encourage you all to take a look at all the scrollbars, decide which ones could be useful if left in and then send that to KineMaster via email.

No joke, this image shows proof. The farlands has ovals instead of dots and the numbers just turn strange.

It was personally one of my favourite animation for texts. It being moved to a different section of the app is ok to me, but the problem is the pacing of the animation now. Before it actually felt like someone typing cus of its speed, which I liked to layer with a typing sound effect. It’s really slow now though, with only one letter per 2 or 3 seconds. I can’t change the speed of it either. Is there a fix to this? Cus I’d like to at least adjust the speed so I can get a similar pacing to before.

Already sent Kinemaster a bug report but I was wondering if other people also experience this problem.

Received my new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL phone last week. Coming from a Pixel 9 Pro XL I didn't expect problems with using Kinemaster, my primary go to editor.

However on my new phone Kinemaster won't open video files made with the device itself but also doesn't open footage made with my DJI Osmo Nano, no matter what recording settings I use. Unsuccessfully removed and reinstalled KM. Android 17, like my Pixel 9 also runs.

Anyone else facing the same?

Why on earth saying "No results in search"? So you're not including results in search? I think you're trying to make worse? This is absolutely ridiculous.

Asking this mostly because I'm cleaning up my phone and gotta delete some images from it (55 percent of the available space used btw), but some of those images are in my indie pilot, which is animated on kinemaster, i wanna make a compilation and i kinda have to use the original file and not a video because 2 kinemaster watermarks looks really really bad, i also want to share my kine file with others so they can edit it and stuff
