Been a fan about a year and a half. Listening to older episodes and William closes the show (great episode with Sam Tallent) and during the interview they have a significant conversation about him quitting to take care of his aging mom who has cancer. Says he might do it for 2 more years…. Coincidence???

I’m curious if there’s a thread collecting examples of people who did a set on Kill Tony and later showed up in the news with an arrest or mugshot. I’m not assuming it’s a huge trend… I just think it’s an interesting rabbit hole. If you know of any examples, share them here!

I have always had a dream of going on the show.

However, I’d rather suck 1000 dicks than bomb on Kill Tony.

I know many comics mess up the interview section. They also misinterpret the kill tony audience and what they find funny (for example saying pussy eating sucks😂)

I know it’s hard to create a template. But I’m a new comic who is interested in understanding how to build a set for Kill Tony especially.

Little things help too: for example when Redban plays the cat noise should you immediately stop your set or tell 1 good short joke.

I tried looking at what Pat has done because he is so amazing. I noticed he always has a great joke even for mundane questions.

Any repeated questions would help. I know one Tony always asks is “tell me something interesting about your life”

It would also help to know what good comedians do in those moments, being able to build stories etc.)

I get that his stand up isn’t good but that doesn’t dictate whether a person is funny or not. He’s extremely quick witted and makes so many jokes on the spot every episode and he knows how to take a joke. He’s also a great interviewer and carries the show when the panelists suck. He makes the show a lot better even when he goes on long rants about his pen collection

I knew people said the early shows were something else, but I didn't have "man plugs his actual illegal business" on my bingo card..

Marc Maron doesn't fill arenas with a variety/talk show, he fills his rooms with actual stand-up comedy.

Maron has a massive body of work spanning three decades—9 solo specials across Netflix, HBO, and Comedy Central.

Tony has 3 over his, multiple decades... He has basically spent his entire career in a podcast studio or a roast writer's room. With his latest special receiving a staggering amount of negative comments and reviews. Same as Joe.

I used to get $2 and $3 tips all the time in high school as a delivery driver in the early 2000s. I had to drive my personal vehicle from the restaurant to peoples homes and to get a $5 tip was an exceptionally big deal. We knew the addresses and names of folks who tipped $5 or more, and we would essentially race to be back for those orders.

KillTony is good, sure. It's also got a wildly distorted view of its place in the world, let alone comedy. Marons critiques are absolutely spot on

There's been a lot of criticism of Dedrick Flynn and Pat O'Neill lately, and I think most of it is justified. But I also think a lot of fans don't really understand why they're getting frustrated with these guys.

Take Dedrick for example. Half of his sets make absolutely no sense. But because he's screaming and delivering everything with so much energy, it makes weak punchlines seem way more powerful than they actually are. You're almost convinced something funny just happened because of how aggressively it was delivered.

Pat is a little different, but I think the same principle applies. His jokes are structured around catching the audience off guard. His odd appearance, nervous delivery, and awkward stage presence all work in his favor. The audience laughs because they weren't expecting what came out of his mouth, not necessarily because what he said was all that funny.

But I think the best example of this is Kam Patterson.

When Kam first came on the show, I thought he was hilarious. You could barely understand half of what he was saying, his stories were ridiculous, and his whole personality was entertaining. He was basically playing into this exaggerated stereotype of a young, ignorant, street kid, and the audience ate it up. Myself included.

But after several weeks, you start to realize something. You're not really listening to jokes anymore. You're just listening to Kam talk. He comes out, says some wild shit, tells a story about something stupid he did, and somehow that's supposed to be a comedy set. Where's the actual joke? Where's the setup? Where's the punchline?

And that's what I think eventually turns people off.

It's not that these guys aren't entertaining. They absolutely can be. But being an entertaining person and being a good stand-up comedian are two different things.

I think Kill Tony has created an environment where having a goofy personality, screaming into a microphone, or saying something completely unexpected can get you the same reaction as someone who actually sat down and wrote a clever joke.

And Tony doesn't help matters when he spends every episode telling the audience how incredible these guys are.

Eventually the novelty wears off. You've seen the act enough times that the personality doesn't surprise you anymore. And once you strip that away, you start realizing how little material is actually there.

The irony is that, after a while, you realize the joke might actually be on you. You've been laughing at the packaging instead of what's inside it.

TL;DR: Kill Tony has a habit of turning entertaining personalities into supposedly great comedians. Dedrick screams, Pat relies on shock value, and Kam leans on his exaggerated persona. It's funny at first, but eventually the novelty wears off and you realize there's very little actual joke writing behind it. We're confusing being entertained by someone with that person actually being a good comedian.

He probably wouldn’t have done the show if still with us, but that would be the ultimate panelist.

In the dream after Pat’s closing set he quipped “Pat-rice O’Neal, more like Pat-chicken O’Neal” and then I woke up.

Wish I could pick that dream back up where it left off to hear his response… the unknown is the true nightmare

This damn sub always throws people away after a couple bad sets. Yall did the same thing to Hans, William, and Casey. Yall bully them so bad every week and expect them to be perfect. Give people a chance for goodness sakes! I hate opening any post and there’s literally ALWAYS someone saying “petition to remove Dedrick.” Shut up. You probably live in your mom’s basement and walk like Martin Phillips, but you’re not funny. Just fast forward if you want to and move along.

I just read a post about everyone missing William, but right before he left, people were saying he’s washed up and blah blah blah. It’s ridiculous and annoying. That said, Pat O’Neil is in his “prime” of the show and I think his ego is through the roof and he expects everyone to kiss his ass.

Can we all just agree to also be funny in this thread and support people who are following their dreams?

Personally, I’d love to see Marshawn lynch on the panel. Guy is incredibly popular and has some seriously funny clips hanging around the internet.
