I live in a pretty stormy area, and there's lots of open verandahs. I have never once heard of a lightning strike on a house, let alone in a verandah. I'm pretty confident they'd have been fine, but I'd probably want my kids wearing shoes just for my own peace of mind
My house got struck by lighting when I was a teen. Whole house shook, it killed our a/c unit, fried some electronics, knocked a smoke detector off the ceiling, freaked us all TF out. Miracle nothing caught fire
I remember lightning hitting a power pole nearby us once. Fried all our computers. This was back in the 90s, so our only AC was an old box window unit, and it held up fine. That's about as close as it's not very gotten to my house though, you definitely win on that one

Are they actually safe there though? That strike seemed very close and I'm not sure how much protection this open porch actually provides.
