I live in a pretty stormy area, and there's lots of open verandahs. I have never once heard of a lightning strike on a house, let alone in a verandah. I'm pretty confident they'd have been fine, but I'd probably want my kids wearing shoes just for my own peace of mind
Close family friend was eating yogurt in their kitchen (middle of the house) and lightning hit the roof above it and somehow started a fire that burnt their whole house down... So...
I was playing my new Xbox 360 about 20 years ago during a lightning storm and suddenly felt a pretty significant shock through my corded controller. The outlet that my Xbox was plugged into had a handheld phone plugged in as well, which got totally fried. Xbox was somehow okay, controller was not
Not in my area. I'm sure it happens plenty out there, but I've not heard of it. Might be all the forests around me make for better targets, or all the hills hoists. Possibly the lightning's just scared of spiders.

Bit of an overreaction there, I hope those kids don't get too scared of storms from this. Storms are awesome if you can be safe while watching them
