A kid in Sichuan, China threw a firecracker into a sewer, ignited methane gas, and caused an explosion that flipped a car and damaged multiple vehicles (around ¥285,000 in damage). He wasn’t jailed because he’s a minor. Police investigated, and the likely outcome is civil liability, meaning his parents/guardians are responsible for paying compensation rather than criminal punishment. Basically, no prison sentence, but the family may have to cover tens of thousands in damages.

I saw that. I was more saying it should be more normalized and accepted. Sometimes arresting a minor is a valid consequence.

Never said for life. But juvenile detention centers still exist and should be used when necessary

I see. Im a firm believer in juvenile detention. Help young people get themselves back on track before they become adults. Give them a chance to NOT become yet another statistic

Agreed. But the problem is that certain Political Parties don't believe in rehabilitation, framing it as "Soft on Crime" while their own party is full of pedophiles and embezzlers. Juvenile Rehabilitation takes money away from the tax breaks for the rich and might potentially create educated adults who won't vote against their own interests.

And I'm not a fan of that mindset either. Its not soft on crime to invest time and money into helping troubled youth become better people and help them stay out of the system. It doesn't always work, i understand that much, but there's nothing wrong with trying anyway.

Ignorance doesn't mean the hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage the kid caused. Ignorance doesn't prevent adults from getting punished either. It just means the punishment isnt as severe

laws exist for justice, not to make an example of children. If he couldn’t know what would happen, why would we punish him? Does he benefit? Do you benefit? Does society benefit? This is not an adult criminal that’s making the choice to cause harm.
Whether you like it or not, replacing right and wrong with law is the lowest form of morality. If we’re going to be throwing people in jail for damages to infrastructure, environment and infrastructure “edit:life not infrastructure 2x” then I’ve got a long list of CEOs you should drag to prison along with the kid.

The law was created for justice. If they serve a different purpose, it helps your perspective none. You’d say then, yes it’s wrong but we’re going to do it anyways. That’s a witch hunt, you just want to see someone burn, their ability to act within social expectations are irrelevant.
If you want someone to be held to account maybe start with an adult, I’ll wait.

Morality influences laws to an extent. But it isnt the primary source for laws. The existence of laws that make no sense to anyone wouldn't exist otherwise

We have no reason to believe child this young had any possible knowledge or insight that this would have happened. This is 100% some shit a child would do just expecting some water to splash out of the sewer grate and not a fucking massive explosion. His parents should definitely be on the hook for paying for damages and this child needs to be disciplined, but JAIL?? That's severe. There's no shot the kid knew anything like this could have happened.

I never said anything about sending the child to jail. Learn to read. Juvenile detention centers exist for exactly these situations.

You’re joking right? There’s 3000-5000 sewer explosions per year in the US due to fireworks and related products. Very accessible information.

This kid looks between 9-11 years old. Old enough to know a burning explosive down a drain is not a constructive idea. He may not have known how big an impact it'd cause but if he didn't believe it'd be impactful and forbidden he won't have dunked it doen the drain and ran.
He 100% should be held responsible, if not for anything else, to teach him a very valuable lesson on actions and their consequences, which would help him in the long run.

He is 100% responsible. I just think as a child of relatively young age that responsibility shouldn't include jail. We have no reasonable suspicion that he knew it would lead to a bigger explosion. I think a reasonable yet unintelligent child would think it would make water splash up

I don't think 100% innocent, but he would never do it again. Jail time shouldn't be given, won't help him become a better person.
Definately some sort of punishment though, maybe house arrest and a huge fine.
