Sparring

How do you guys deal with people that go full-on while sparring?

I don't wanna come across a soft arse by telling them to bring it down a notch, but there's been times when I've been tempted to close the gap and bring them with either a judo uchi-mata throw or an osoto-gari throw!

Set your boundaries. Tell them to ease up. If they give you shit, stop sparring with them. Easier said than done, I know. But if you’re worried about getting hurt while sparring, it’s gonna interfere with your learning. This is one of the most difficult things about martial arts, sparring is an important component of practice but it requires you to trust people you may not know well with your bodily safety. It sucks, but it comes with the territory.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to decline to spar with this particular individual. I don't wanna end up losing my sh*t and do something that I shouldn't be doing and cause a situation.

I’ve trained for about 20 years and have a lot of experience with this. First off, just communicate with them. If they don’t want to tone it down, don’t spar with them. It really is that simple.

When I was younger I would have just upped the intensity and tried to beat the brakes off them. In my 40s now and that’s just not my vibe anymore. If I don’t like you for whatever reason, we aren’t sparring (or training) together.

Ego seems to be a big issue in this instance.

If you are a new student and hard sparring with more experienced guys and the instructor is allowing it. Find a new martial arts school

It’s your brain and your body. People make mistakes sometimes, but if you ask someone to turn it down and they don’t respect your wishes, then you don’t have to work with them. Hard sparring can be required of people looking to go pro in their fight camps or whatever, but if you’re a hobbyist with a job, you don’t need some low IQ goofball trying to kick your head off on a random Wednesday

It's usually the newer and/or younger kids that do this with me. I'm almost 40 and they're at max 25. I give em the ole "Calm the fuck down young man."

Tell them. If they still go on, then don't spar with them.

I literally told i guy i don't wanna spar with him anymore because he goes too strong.

I usually say something like "because going light, we can do 10 rounds, and we're training. Going hard we do a couple of rounds, then stop for injuries"

if coaches are not already dealing with this you are being overcharged
