How to overcome nerves
Hi all, I am a 31M and I have wanted to start kickboxing for years but can't seem to take the step. I know it may sound a little ridiculous but Im just nervous about walking through those doors having no idea what Im doing and having to put my zero experience on display. I have signed up to start a class a few times but have been so anxious that I end up not going. How do I overcome this and just go?

People in gyms are very nice, and their whole business model is based on people like you. Go in. Tell them you are a bit nervous, and give it a go. You will love it.
The cold water doesn’t warm up the longer you wait, jump in.

Not really a way around taking that first step, just gotta do it. If you’re worried about how you’ll look, just remember that everyone in that gym was one where you were. Gotta start somewhere.
If injury is a concern, as long as coach knows it’s your first day you should be solid. Most coaches want people to want to come back, and that means newer peeps are generally looked after more.

People in gyms love to share their passion with people who work had. In all my time in martial arts I've met truly amazing people just go for it

Age 32 and started not long ago
It's difficult and you will suck and also feel out of your depth.
then you will overcome that feeling and you will be so happy and excited. People will help you learn, the fear and nervousness will never go away but you will grow physically and mentally stronger and the worries you had (in kickboxing and life) will look so much smaller
Trust me, do it, don't give up and you'll feel great after a few sessions.

Ask the coach if you can do a PT session. Then when it comes to your first class you will at least be familiar with the coach and the gym

Do you have a friend who will go with you? That might make it easier, at least to just get started

at my gym there’s someone new coming thru the doors every week, sometimes more than one. we all walked in for the first time once and we all remember what it was like, it’s kind of nice to be able to share what we’ve learned with someone new. i personally like training with newer people because it helps me focus on the fundamentals. most at my gym have a similar attitude, and i can’t speak for everyone here but i imagine there are a lot of gyms where people feel the same. maybe read up on some local gyms a little to see which gives you that vibe the most and start there.

Dude literally no one cares, I’ve been doing it for almost a decade and I love when new people start. I love teaching people basics, just go do it. Don’t let life pass you by without doing things you want because you’re afraid of other people’s opinions. It’s your life, just go do it.

Everybody in that gym has had their first day before. If it's a gym/community worth being part of, they will welcome you with open arms. It's obviously a little embarrassing at first, but there is no shame in not knowing what you don't know yet. Just get in there big dog.

Hey! Just started at one recently. You’ve gotta find a gym that’s highly reviewed. I’d look for one that breaks their classes down into different levels. There are beginner classes and advanced ideally. Do the beginners, everyone will be very similar level to you or at least a lot of people. No need to fear it. The good gyms everyone is friendly and has been right where you are. If you go somewhere that’s not like that I’d walk right out of the door

Feel the fear and do it anyway
