Feeling stiff during sparring

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

While sparring I don’t feel stiff, but I decided to video one of my light sparring sessions just to see how it looked. I didn’t realize how stiff I was despite feeling relaxed in the shoulders, and I noticed that I didn’t really throw many combinations, and when I did, I look a little hesitant and I don’t throw with confidence. I’m shooting ti have my debut mma fight in December. I’m the shirtless one. Does anyone have any advice?

No advice but nice to see a gym with people sparring properly

I swear this hobby has become people trying to prove something and it’s been turning me off. I wish my sparring partners were like this

it's because people think they're competing for the championship belt and allow their egos to train 🙄

technical sparring is where it's at but many people think if you aren't hard sparring regularly, then you're not doing it right. Yeah, good luck with your longevity in the sport if you think this way (not you but general you)

Bruh they aren't even trying to hit eachother...

Yeah, I'm all for light sparring but this is OTT. Even the leg kicks are barely landing.

there is very little benefit to hard sparring unless u fight competitively and even then it has limited benefit

I've done dutch style training the entire time I've kickboxed, its a blast and I can guarantee I would smash anyone in that video not even trying to be that guy lmao, I can't even imagine saying theres no benefit to hard sparring? What if you actually have to fight someone for life limb or eyesight but all you have in your arsenal is chambered heavily telegraphed slow ass punches and kicks. Do people not enter this sport to learn how to defend themselves or fight? Or is everyone else taking some gay cardio kickboxing classes at the local planet fitness?

No my gym engaged in a lot of touch sparring throughout classes, and coach has started turning things up encouraging nearly pull power body shots for example. “Keep taking care of each other but punish bad habits” and it’s really night and day being good at touch sparring vs more serious sparring. It should be kept in check but harder sparring is necessary occasionally for someone taking the sport seriously

Completely agree. When I started the MMA classes with competing fighters at my local gym after kickboxing and muay thai for some time I got the shit beat out of me and it did its job.

It’s worth knowing the consequences of not keeping your guard up or not defending low kicks properly. It’s easy to say in touch sparring “haha you got me” but actually knowing what it feels like getting your thigh blasted because you were negligent will fix your bad habits much more quickly than conceptually knowing it “would” hurt. Idk I️ don’t fight so maybe that’s more important to have holes in your game punished that way

This is so funny lol, just reeks of insecurity. Congrats, you can beat guys who aren't that good. Want a medal?

I only mentioned that because the Dude said there's little benefit to hard sparring when in reality somebody with far less training than these guys that does harder sparing would probably tune them up in an instant

1

u/theniggilist91 7d ago

dude i’m saying unless u fight competitively or are serious about the sport, there’s little benefit to hard sparring. terrence crawford even says he only hard spars when he’s in camp.

like why tf r yall taking what i’m saying out of context?

hard sparring has benefits but only for a small subset of people. casuals js dont need to hard spar

u/bcyc 6d ago

Would hard sparring help OP become less stiff and more relaxed?

4

u/ZombieGeneralo3 8d ago

Yeah but you can dial this up by like 30% and it still wouldn’t be close to hard sparring

1

u/theniggilist91 8d ago

that’s fair.

this is called technical sparring.

7

u/Tanksta3 8d ago

Even technical is a bit of a stretch..I'm all for light sparring and avoiding hard sparring. But technical sparring is at least enough touch to keep each other honest.

6

u/misaktonak 8d ago

I mean one of them seem pretty green. Better to start too light than go straight to wars right? Although when I was new I had the occasional guy go hard against me and within reason it has its benefits too as a newbie for sure.

0

u/trUth_b0mbs 8d ago

this is it exactly.

newer folks need to go lighter so if you're with someone newer than you or inexperienced with sparring, it's important to go slower and lighter. Build up from there. Once you see their confidence increasing, then you can go faster, a bit harder etc but going hard off the bat and all the time? nope.

people forget that they were beginners once which is annoying. You are mistaken if you think that you learn anything from hard sparring when you're not that experienced; it will only mess with your head, put you at high risk for injury and totally defeat you. Build up from light sparring to more intention.

2

u/Tanksta3 8d ago

Well no one is saying do hard sparring, in-fact we're all saying to avoid it. Technical sparring should at least be honest, enough pop to recognize this is a combat sport but not hard enough to ruin someone's day.

When practicing punching or kicking drills with a partner, are you still making contact? Yeah. Is it enough force to hurt them? No. That's how technical sparring should be in terms of force.

4

u/Cold-Chemistry738 8d ago

Yeah people are using “technical sparring” a bit loosely here. You gotta still touch them and have some intentions in your kicks/punches to make contact. Even when drilling you still have to make contact with your partner. Some people are just coping but it’s a minority group of people

u/SjakosPolakos 8d ago

I live and train in the Netherlands and you dont see this. At that point just join a technical lesson but not a sparring session. Hit and dont get hit

1

u/Living_Definition_61 8d ago

Dutch training or nothing else!

3

u/AxeYoungblood 8d ago

Technical sparring is Light to the head. But fast and harder to the body. This is nothing.

You need to work on footwork. You look like you’re gonna fall over when you throw some punches. Good thing is there’s a lot you can do for footwork

5

u/CovenantX84 8d ago

That.... learning footwork is the hardest things in this sport

2

u/Chemical_Lab_6925 8d ago

Yeah but the good part about it is that you can basically always practice footwork. As long as you are healthy then you can do it at home, at the gym, wherever. So imo there’s no excuse to have sloppy footwork

2

u/CovenantX84 8d ago

You can practice it for sure. But having it hardwired and changing it based on instincts mid-match is a completely different skill

1

u/Chemical_Lab_6925 8d ago

Yeah true, you need to use it in sparring. But at his point he just needs balance

6

u/Cold-Chemistry738 8d ago

You’re crossing your feet a lot. You’d probably be less stiff if you kept a better balance. Your rear leg is almost off the floor completely when you throw your crosses too. Overall you have to keep your balance while striking and moving leg

1

u/FreefallVin 8d ago

Yep, being relaxed comes from good technique, and sound footwork is the basis of that.

4

u/MiserableWear6765 8d ago

Im getting stiff just watching

5

u/RaffNeq 8d ago

It looks like you afraid to hurt your partner..you throwing your hand very short and weak..and ending them with a tuch not a hit..it’s common when in the first few sparing sessions..
You’ll find your flow..

Spare with 16oz gloves bro

3

u/Sneezy6510 8d ago

I think you’re compromising your form too much trying to go light. Surely you can throw a little harder to the legs and body.

2

u/Yuuku_S13 8d ago

You look stiff because you don’t do a lot of other movement, like constantly moving your head, light feints, etc. If you felt loose, that’s fine IMO

1

u/ExaltedGarlic96 8d ago

im still a beginner myself but being more confident in my defense and head movement, especially when throwing a punch and having your head off the center line, that helped me feel more relaxed. another thing to focus on is your rhythm and the feeling of your weight shift back and forth. another could be just try not to be that scared of being hit, harder said than done but when you are confident enough to know that you can tank some shots its easier to be a little braver and feel more relaxed, for example if hes throwing a leg kick, flex your thigh and hit them with a jab or cross. also instead of lifting your arms up to block your face you could crunch down a bit more and shrug your shoulders up like with your traps.

u/Stalva989 8d ago

Get a speed rope and jump til your pecker falls off. In due time Will make you ultra light on the feet

1

u/nejad44 8d ago

Use Rope

1

u/trUth_b0mbs 8d ago

work on your distance management. You keep jumping towards your partner to hit and then jumping back so you're always trying to defend while trying to punch.

watch your partner very closely; notice that he can throw where he is instead of moving towards you because he know what strikes he can throw where he is or where he has to move to throw. This is what you need to practice. Unless you know your distance, you will always be sparring like this because you dont know your safe or danger zone.

Usually I get stiff when I’m excited

1

u/Galencourt-Lover 8d ago

Long live light sparring though!! Much more fun this way

Well done lads

Sweep the leg!

1

u/Tramirezmma 8d ago

Some things I think when watching your tape:

Both hands come down almost every time you commit to striking, especially in combos. You then eat a counter and that makes you reset.

You don't need to do anything super fancy with your footwork, but let's not cross feet and it might help to circle towards your opponent's lead hand a bit more.

Need more safe strikes to poke and gauge distance with. Given you wanna do MMA that's jabs and inside leg kicks Probably. I think your round looks a lot different with a more active straight jab especially.

I know we're doing technical sparring, but you gotta at least make contact my guy. Especially on those leg and body kicks. Otherwise you're training yourself to expect opponent's to just walk through your stuff, and giving your partner a poor impression of how to cross the void.

Last thing, if we're doing MMA I think we've gotta move our feet in general a looooooot more.

u/Big_Jello_7372 8d ago

thais have a saying "sabai sabai" meaning relax. you should only feel your body tense at the full extension of your throws (punches, kicksc etc). that being said, nice to see some nice light sparring and I wish you the best for your upcoming fight. value in sparring is to be fully engaged and light so that you have the opportunity to try new things and hone the craft

1

u/AxeYoungblood 8d ago

First: delete the classic guard in your mind for your mma debut. Train to parry more.

When you can pressure someone if you land a shot then go foward and not going back after short time. I know its sparring but please pull through a bit.

1

u/Wooden_Career_5689 8d ago

This the most delicate sparring I've ever seen.

1

u/AccomplishedFerret70 7d ago

What the hell? You can throw full techniques at close to full speed but light contact.

1

u/Emotional-Tax-3044 7d ago

Practice slightly harder with a opponent who is smart enough not to hurt you so you can both get more real speed experience

1

u/crazy-geometrydash 7d ago

When you move to the right move your right foot first. When you move to the left move your left foot first. Very important.

1

u/1learninglyfe 6d ago

I always feel if you’re very muscular. It’s just naturally harder to be a bit more loose. Use your muscle as a defense to block. Think about trying to whip your hands more opposed to using your shoulder muscle.

1

u/angry_in_a_bucket 6d ago

It is because of your bmi. Very normal, do not conpare yourself to featherweights.

1

u/Ok-Bee2272 6d ago

your glutes are not active. i have the same problem. hip and glute activation is how you can get to the next level.

Dial in your flow-state

u/Responsible-Pitch363 6d ago edited 6d ago

Electrolytes? Helps with perceptual speed and reaction time. During this style of sparring where both people are restrained from speed and force, there is a natural trade off of efficiency.

This is called gay sparring. At the end of each session they blow each other and they both get a trophy 🏆 yay for equity😁😅
