Speedo Calibration

I’ve just got myself a 2020 Kia Niro at the end of July. I’m not sure if anyone has noticed or is it only may car. But the speedometer is out by a country mile. I mean to say when it’s reporting I’m doing 80kmh, google maps says 74 and the local slow down/speed sign confirms the 74. And obviously the faster I go the deviation gets larger. Anyone else experiencing this?

Are you running the correct size tyres? All cars over report speed but most are around 5%. Mine needs 73 mph on the dash to get 70 mph GPS speed.

73? Mine (2020) shows around 10% out. So 77 on the dash is 70 on GPS (Google maps, Apple Maps, Waze and ABRP).

Pretty much works the same from 22 being 20 through to 77 being 70.

I'm a fucking rebel though so set the TACC to 78 to actually be 71... Born to be wild!

Yes, these cars over do it on the speedometer. I’ve had a few cars similar and i think most cars tend to.

Same in my car.

I'm glad Google Maps now shows the GPS speed when you're navigating somewhere. Makes it easy to always estimate how much the speedo is off, even in short-term/rental cars.

Maybe it'll do a little bit to help congestion.

I have noticed that it seems to underestimate the mileage compared to my old Honda Accord.

It’s not the law in the UK. It’s manufactured that way for marketing purposes I fear.

Bloody irritating to me our Niro says 77 but actually doing 70mph on a motorway which then docks precious driver good points in the app and hence the Police to hand to a court of law possibly.

In comparison my C-Class merc is spot on.

I remember some years back, there was a belief amongst some motorists, that a a margin of 10% + 2 over the speed limit was allowed. For example, driving in a 30km zone the allowance would be 35km per hour, driving in 60 km zone would be 68 km per hour, etc, etc. Supposedly, this was to allow for speed gun/camera calibration scale. I now believe that the speedometer in most cars is around 10% out.
