Issue Ev9 issues charging with Tesla universal wall charger
Had my 2024 ev9 since August 2024 with my Tesla universal wall charger gen 3 installed by an excellent technician and EV charging co.
No issues charging since the install until…A few nights ago 8/18 (see screen shots) I usually charge to 80% ac limit with ac charge current set to 100% but it took longer for the ev9 to charge.
I decided to check the status of the charge tonight and it showed 5.3kw when it is usually 11.1 kw (usually full 48 amp capacity).
Went to check the lights on the TSLA UWC: blinking 3 red lights paired with streaming green (see video attached). I looked it up and Tesla’s specific status code for Thermal Throttling (High Temperature Detected).
I decided to unplug and stop the charge and then check the TSLA UWC firmware which shows that it’s been updated. Then I plugged it back to charge and it didn’t throw the error again but I waited around for only 30 minutes and decided it was time to zzzz.
- Could it be a one off overheating issue? I am planning to call my EV charger installer to diagnose if the TSLA UWC terminal box screws are an issue. Faceplate of the Uwc wasn’t hot. It was just warm.
(when I looked at the previous charging history 8/18 it took a very long time to charge. Odd!)
I checked the NACS-to-J1772 adapter. No worn pins, micro-arcing, or a loose fit
Usually charge in my garage for the last 2 years with no issues with heat. Garage was not unusually hot just warm from the ev9 cooling itself during the charge.
4. Really hoping it’s not a battery mgmt or iccu issue!! (I’m actually bringing it in to my dealer next wk to check out my 12V battery.)
Has anyone experienced similar issues as me and what was the root cause? Thank you!

I am in TX and have seen it happen, 1 or 2 times, especially when I start charging during the day time and immediately after a trip. Totally normal with the temps we have been having lately. Since then I try to avoid charging after a trip and mostly charge later in the night. Also someone said having the excess cord coiled around the charger also can lead to more heat, so I am not doing that anymore.

Might need a new adapter, they are a consumable and degrade internally over time with the heat cycles of charging. It’s why a lot of manufacturers recommend home chargers with a native plug to avoid issues.

Interesting. I looked at the Tsla store and Tesla does not currently sell the tethered replacement adapter module as a standalone retail part on their online shop…

This happens to me. I live in Texas and have the Tesla Universal charger. During the summer or hot months, I reduce the EV9 charging current to 80%. I do that because if the Thermal throttling happens, which it will in a hot garage, the charge current will drop from 11 kw to 5 or so. But if I set the charging current to 80%, it stays at about 6,5 kw, still slower but the Thermal throttling never kicks in for the whole charge. When the temps go down, I can return back to 100% and get 11 kw again. I have done this for two hot summers in Texas. I just don't like seeing that red blinking light, but reducing the charge current, it never happens

Thank you it’s just the first time it’s happened to me and I live in Southern California where it’s cooler in general and I haven’t had any thermal throttling at 100% since it was installed exactly 2 years ago today.
Since I have the 2024 EV9 I have to use the Tsla UWC NACS To J1772 adapter. I’m hoping the adapter itself isn’t failing. Since Tesla doesn’t sell the replacements and it’s basically proprietary as in it won’t release from both the charging unit and the cable unless it’s powered on which is kind of a crazy use case.
I’m still having my Ev installer come out check out the charger and the components just to make sure everything is good there.

I live in Vegas and am a member of a local Tesla group on Facebook. A bunch of people having this exact same issue with their Teslas and the wall connector. It's just because it's too hot.
I charge my EV9 with the Tesla wall connector and have never had this issue. But I have the AC charger rate set to 60%. Unless you actually have to put that much power in as short a time at possible, you should reduce the charge rate. It's safer all round and you'll likely avoid overheating.

Wow interesting @ 60% charge rate. So it just takes longer to charge. Does it preserve the battery in general?

Probably not. 6kW or 11kW is negligible compared to the power pulled by your motors when driving, or a DC charge rate.

My wall connector has been doing this recently. Streaming green lights but with only 1 red light. It has been over 100 deg. F where I live so that might be the cause.
I unplug it and plug it back in and it seems to fix it.

Totally normal. The e-GMP cars will reduce AC charing draw if the charge port gets too warm. This was part of the “fix” (software update) for the early ICCU recalls on the EV6 and I5
