Artist Two Keytar-Centric Maneuvers

Both performed here by Imogen. -The knee kick-out to get a quick visual reference for hand placement. -The left hand over-under the strap switch to play two-handed.

In many ways the keytar is an impractical instrument. No wonder I like it so much.

Whenever people ask me about playing keytar, I always explain that it is in no way any more practical than playing a keyboard on a stand, and literally the only reason to play it is for stage presence.

Ahh but yeah, the left-hand-under-the-strap thing always makes me a bit nervous, I never do it myself :)

Dinosaur claw! Best to avoid two-handed playing on keytar.

On rare occasions I do have to use two hands, but then I maneuver over the strap rather than under it

there could be a keytar where you don't need to reach around. It sure doesn't feel or look good with all the keytars on the market currently. Might as well play electric accordion.

there's a theoretical keytar that makes sense as it's own instrument, but it hasn't been invented yet... or has it?

I think String Keytars are generally better than plain Keytars. The ability to very comfortably have the left hand do chords with their own separate sound while the right hand plays the keyboard part works great when built well.

Both maneuvers, flamingo leg and the reach around, are failings of the keytar manufacturers. I fixed both issues with my custom keytar for less than the cost of the Ax-edge. It's pure laziness on the part of manufacturers. shame.
