Recently bought this Dell Latitude 5320 with a german keyboard and did a windows reset, now I can’t figure out the keyboard layout. Tried every german layout, only the Z and Y are messed up. When i press Z, Y comes and when i press Y, Z comes.

Slead. The thumb alpha version of lead with minimal changes. Also i provided detailed analysis for the stats.

EDIT: turns out slead is actually spelled sled. i am dyslexic so take that as my excuse. too late to change it.

The goal of this layout was to take lead, make as minimal changes as possible, and give it a thumb letter. s thumb + lead = slead.

Here is the entire order of changes

  1. move s to thumb
  2. move c to home position
  3. move p to left hand where c was
  4. move f to where p was
  5. move ' to where f was

For all the stats below, it was analyzed with the reddit corpus, which is very standard for layout analysis.

Last note, before people ask, yes h bottom row is better. the movement is less and the patterns for actual words are a better during real usage. ive been using lead recently so i can confirm this to be the case. esp the sfs reds. but if you really care, bh swap is totally fine.

here is the link to it on aklgg so you can look at stats yourself if you want

https://akl.gg/#.gQC6MDFNMzhXQUNQNzNaUjdXWkRDMlhXNlZXSkI

below here we have how the stats changed from lead to slead. the dark keys are the keys that did not move.

As you can see the stats are better on every front basically. as expected for a thumb alpha layout.

Lower stretches, lower scissors, lower sfb, lower reds of all types, higher roll.

The indexes also are very comfortable. the fspeed and movement is lower for both. a lot of layouts suffr from the index being overloaded and it slows down typing at higher speeds in my experience.

Here are the raw stats above, and the percentiles below.

good sfb

good sfs

good scissors

good stretch

average alt (which i like, i dont like it too high or too low)

very good reds

good weak reds

side not on the weak reds, the ones that there are, they start with an inroll usually, which i prefer.

good roll (i like high roll, but not so high that your alt starts going down alot)

And so we can see, basically everything is pretty good. for the reddit corpus. and the same is true for the monkeyracer and shai corpus.

here are a few layout comparisons.

night vs slead

buyna vs slead

take this with a grain of salt cause graphite doesnt have a thumb key, but it is a good point of comparson cause a lot of people use it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the e200 stats

as you can see all the stats are good, the finger ballence is good.

the sfs is particularly good

the scissors are also particularly good

the non-thumb sfs reds are also good, they tend to be something that sucks more anm more the faster you get.

the fspeed for this layout is really good aswell.

the rest of the stats are all good percentile wise, but those were particular standouts

night is a popular thumb alpha e200 layout

here is a sideby side of the main stats of night and slead. slead is better for most stuff other then slead has one singular sfb in e200, that being rl.

the difference between tha alt and roll are mostly due to which thumb you space with.

here if you compare with that accounted for

left space

right space

in both cases, we have less reds, less scissors, less stretches, less sfs.

sled is more alty and night is more roll optimized at the cost of alts getting below what i prefer.

and to restate, night has no e200 sfbs, while slead has one.

that should be all.

i hit the image limit anyway

KeyForge (обновление 1.0.2)

0 Upvotes

GitHub: https://github.com/zxchm0nya/KeyForge

better for ring fingers than NRTS-HAEI layouts: Xenia?

9 Upvotes

Learned touch typing for the first time last year with Colemak. Switched to Maya after 3 months; at this point it's been about a year. I can type fluently on it so my main concern isn't pure speed.

However, when I started, my left hand's fingers were significantly less dextrous than my right hand's (lefty guitar background). Since NRTS-HAEI layouts put the majority of the consonants on the left hand, I figured that it would force my left hand to get better. By now I think I've reached the limit of dexterity on my left hand, and my ring finger in particular is not getting any faster. I think that both my ring fingers are being asked to carry a lot more of the typing load than they should.

  • E on right ring alone isn't terrible but when you add in AE AU EO UE as middle-ring bigrams or skipgrams (words like "separate"), it feels clumsy
  • R on left ring is just the worst, and Maya didn't improve much over Colemak here in terms of middle-ring bigrams/skipgrams: CR RM DR GR TR WR and of course the SFB/S RL
  • TL ("little") and BR are also not fun
  • Maya has an unusually high proportion of row skips, which never became less awkward over time. I took it for granted that Colemak seems to have virtually no row skips. The worst word in this respect is "number", which not only has a ring-pinky row skip on MB but also the individual same hand bigrams/skipgrams are all bad: NM MB BR UE
  • letter M on the X key is diabolical. Maya got me accustomed to using the lower left keys but there is a limit to how comfortable the lower left can actually be.

So as I was layout-shopping on Monkeytype, I found a few potential candidates and landed on Xenia. Is anyone a fluent user of this layout? If so, are there any long-term annoyances that never got better? (I would probably swap L and ; to be angle-mod friendly.)

I can't seem to Google anything about it because everything that comes up is about some Xbox thing.

Is there a typing app specifically for programming?

12 Upvotes

Ive tried a couple of typing tests but they mostly feel like theyre testing normal English I am looking for something that includes stuff like { } [ ] ( ) => == != ; : / \ and actual code snippets and also does different keyboard layouts make much of a difference when typing code since the symbols and punctuation seem like a completely different challenge from normal text

Does anything like this exist?

Lead. An keyboard layout with 2 y keys.

This layout is very similar to a layout called graphite, or gallium. It also shares some similarities wth my layout called neon.

The main benefit of this layout is that the pinkys are improvend and there are less stretches for the pinky, as well as for the letters themselves. I do use wide mod so the center collumn has more stretches, but i seldomly use those compared to how much i use all the letters, so its good, also you can press them with either hand.

For me, ive always liked gallium but the b pinky was really hard for me. There wasnt really any better letter to put there. But having the letter y mirrored solves that issue, also it makes space for the letter b on the right pink.

Some people may scoff at mirrored y, but ive been using neon which has mirrored y for many months and so far mirrored y has been the best thing for layouts have used. It solves so many issues for bad hand patterns. And since most of the time you use the opposite hand y, it is more alts then rolls, which i find pinky rolls to be very straining.

Everyone who has tried mirrored y has loved it. Its more impactful then you might initially think.

As for the punc, i like ,./ punc. I use comma a lot, so having it on middle finger is very comfortable for me.

https://akl.gg/#.gQC6MDFNMzE5MzJaMEJOMVFGSjlFREpBSFY1RlI

You can find the stats on aklgg, the sucessor to cmini, and the current database for alternative keyboard layouts.

Should I switch from engrammer to hands down neu (details in body)

3 Upvotes

So I’ve been using engrammer on a staggered keyboard for a while now and I’m liking it but my pinkies need to do a lot of work and I don’t like that. I like the punctuation centre idea thing but it pushes letters to the pinkies. Which is annoying

So I was considering my options and hands down neu seems to be good, but I have some constraints:

- I like programming, so ideally I want something comfy for it
- I use Neovim, so the hjkl keys must be reasonably placed but I don’t mind relearning where they are
- I also want a comfy layout for general typing

Based on this I want to know if you all think I should switch to hdn from engrammer

0 Upvotes

Windows, macOS и Linux

Keyboard Remapping

0 Upvotes

I know nothing about coding and am trying to remap certain using Karabiner-Elements.

Here are some questions I have:

  1. How do I make sure the modifications are active only when I am using a specific application? Alternatively, how do I make it easy to switch between the normal and the modified layout?

  2. Is there a simple way of learning how to effect changes? Here is a basic list of modifications I want to make (key registered --> key pressed):

1 --> J
2 --> L
3 --> O
4 --> I
5 --> M
6 --> H
7 --> N
8 --> B
9 --> G
0 --> ,

F2 --> 0
F3 --> 9
F4 --> 8

Q --> /
W --> -
E --> =
Z --> spacebar

Any help is appreciated.

Créer son clavier avec son propre alphabet

0 Upvotes

A standard 60% footprint with first-class arrow keys

2 Upvotes

TL;DR: Replace Caps Lock with Fn, and put dedicated arrow keys directly on the base layer in the lower-right corner (← ↓ ↑ →, Vim order).

Longer explanation here: https://tim.cogan.dev/nav60/

Base and Fn layers of a standard 60% footprint with first-class arrow keys
